WOW! Clapton at his best- I love it when he does the blues. And i love it when he really lets go and gives a full throttle guitar solo. So often he seems to calm it down, but this is raw and emotional. Great stuff! This and Groaning the Blues are my favourite Clapton tracks.
ole slow hand at it. the amount of feeling and passion in this can only be expressed by Claptons sheer perfection at the blues. simple yet stylish. this is the blues. no tricks, gimmicks, or effects. just a guitar, amp, and a GOD. this is what the blues is all about. Chills down my spine everytime.
I wonder how many of you know that another ex bluesbreakers guitarist, namely Peter Green, covered this, and another tremendous show of British talent it is too. Here on you tube.
When Eric plays the solos for those 2 songs 'Have you ever loved a woman' & 'Old love' he shows to people how amazing Mr. Slowhand is. Can't stop listening to these songs, I had the honor to watch him in a live concert (here in Abu Dhabi), he is simply unbelievable.
It's just his style. Clapton plays from the heart which anyone who knows how to really play will tell you is where it counts from. He is genius enough to know that sometimes less is more and is not too proud to sit back and let the musical story unfold untill he needs to step it up.. This is'nt some heavy metal geek born overnight. This stuff takes a lifetime of love and commitment to achieve. Listen to the albumn 24 Nights Live at the Albert Hall. Brilliant examples
@co131091 I totally agree! 24 Nights at the RAH is one of my favorites. I saw him play in 1998 in Los Angeles, and "Old Love" was just incredible. I saw him play in 2077 twice and also in 2011. No one has the same touch on the guitar as E.C. does. Not even SRV, though I would say he was close. I really think Clapton has redefined himself as one of the world's best bluesmen, after a huge career in popular rock music. He really deserves more credit in the blues genre.
To all you Clapton fans please explain to me how the guy can play such great blues then have such a lack of deunde, fire and power in most of the rest of his playing? I am not saying this to be disrespectful I am truly befuddled.
Clapton's legend is built on live solos. He knows where to take it, where to leave space, where to stop, where to dig in, and make it all sound seamless. He is king of on-the-spot blues solos. Studio is something else. Live--Clapton is master. (Another version of same by Mick Taylor is equally awesome, until he goes over the top with too many notes and looses listeners in excess. Less is more.
I am now 58, divorced, no kids at home, no GF, no pets and no livestock to feed. My time is mine. I am buying a guitar and amp and intend to learn to play. This man wil be my guide. What recommendations do you afficianados have for equipment?
Ideally, I would like a Marshall Amp and speaker stack, but they are tubed and todays' world, ain't. I'd lie a Stratocaster, but have no idea what they cost. What ALL does Eric use?
Hey man, it´s great you want to start out! I don´t know what others will suggest, but there are Strat copies out there that are great for beginning - intermediate levels. Check out some videos on the tube. Also, there´s the used guitar way, of course. And for an amp...in my opinion, check out the Champion 600 reissue. That´s the one I want to get myself. Small, perfect for practice, and Fender tube tone! Also, it´s the same Clapton originally used to record Layla (the album).
@dbreed53 First off, congrats on getting into this. Guitar is my true love and it's treated me well. I have a squier strat that I've been playing for so long that Fender's just dont feel right. I payed 100 bucks for it, then I got a peavey vypyr modeling amp (75watt) for 300. If you put it on tube screamer through the deluxe or plexi setting you get an awesome clapton tone. I use it for SRV, Clapton, Hendrix and all my other blues covers.
claptons early stuff from bluesbreakers/cream/blind faith ect is all amazing but from round about 2002 -2008 clapton was on form absoloutly mind blowing !
When you know how to play a guitar well and play how your fealing it can be a real moving experiance. When your happy it shows when your angry you can play the heck out of it and when your sad or in longing for someone that you just can;t have you pour your whole heart and soul and it almost makes you wanna cry.
I can't believe how great Eric plays this song. When he starts playing those solos, I don't ever want it to end. I could listen to a 10 minute solo no problem.
No overplaying, no showboating, just doing it in style.

I Love my EC custom shop strat! If you like the compressed creamy sustatined sound that EC gets you will like this guitar. Of course it sounds like a basic strat without the 25dbx boost turned up. So it is pretty versitile.
