I have just found out that Gordon Jenkins is in fact American, Sorry for this, i had taken it for granted that he must be a brit because of the pronouncing of the leisure/pleasure phrases.
To talk about the point, more thought out, if you listen to nats version he pronounces leisure, in the american venacular, and that clashes with the following phrase, that includes pleasure. The music and lyrics were written by an english composer, and francis albert, as allways takes the correct line.
I was curious to see where the 2.37 point was and had to laugh and completely agree, also think , more sensitive and thought out { as with most of his work } than Nats version.
My mother was a singer during the Big Band Era, and my father was a bass player. My mother liked Nat King Cole, but my father favored Frank. When I told my father that my mother said Nat had "great diction", my father said Sinatra was better, saying that " it's the way Frank puts em' over". Mom later told me that Dad was speaking of Sinatra's inimitable phrasing. My mother agreed w/my father; that nobody could interpret a song like Sinatra! This song show cases "the way Frank puts em' over".
@strictlycomments Lol oh I would never say that and I'm sure depreciating Harry would concur. But yea his is pretty fantastic after the masters (Frank and Nat) of course.
This is a masterpiece of a composition written by a true genius - Gordon Jenkins. Though Frank sang this magnificently as an older and wiser artist as a wistful tribute to lost youth trying to be recaptures it was originally written for Nat who truly owned it. Nat sang this anthem to beauty, youth and joy with sublime simplicity - all the more poignant because like all the greatest he was cut down in his prime - what music, what art - for the ages!!
I have missed this man since discovering him back in May of 1998. After his death Fox's new did a special on the life and time of Francis Albert Sinatra, that was when I became fully aware of the man and his music. It was a mind blowing experience. My only regret is that I missed so many precious year when he was still alive. Oh how I've grown to love Frankie and his beautiful voice. I love you Fankie.
I willl miss this man for the rest of my life. The best ballad singer ever born, a ring a dinger, and a guy who could sing and touch your heart like no other. Mr. Chairman, you're always with me as long as I can play your legacy...singing your incredible music. Hit it man!
Love it. Looks like a spectacular special. I can't find it for a reasonable price on dvd, they need to re-release this!! I envy those who were able to get a copy before it became so pricey.
This was the last song in a medley strung together reflecting some of Frank's moods. This 1965 special got raves, and is a must-see. They trot it out most years on PBS during fund-raising week. Sinatra and Jenkins were a perfect match.
This song written by the talented Gordon Jenkins was a part of my repetoire in my organ lessons at age 12. My dear father would give me the sheet music and beg me to play it while he sang along. Beautiful, evocative song and not hard to play for all it's richness of tone.
This is the last song in a beautiful medley based around his song 'It was a very good year'. It starts with a very good year, goes into 'Young At Heart' and covers 4 or 5 other of his hits, concluding with this song, probably the least well known of all the songs in the medley. Love to see the whole medley on youtube.
It seems that everyone wants to belt it at "Let the music play as long as there's a song to sing"

NAT KING COLE RENDERS THIS SONG FAR SUPERIOR TO SINATRA

@sonofakbar No, I think both of them sing it differently, each in their own unique style.
