@tehmedic It will be a total of 12% sales tax on pretty much everything as of July 1st, right now many items or services are only taxed 5% and some are already taxed 5% GST +7% PST, this may sound like nothing is changing but that's not the case because many goods & services are PST exempt. I saw a figure a while ago that said a new house $400,000 will cost an additional $15 - $20,000 for tax, it was in my newspaper, Ive been looking for the actual formula but haven't found it yet.

That's pretty crazy. I can only really speak as a hairstylist... here we do not and have never taxed those services. Products we sell, of course are taxed, but not our services.

So food and essentials that used to only have PST would also have GST and other goods and services that only had GST will also have PST. I don't see the problem myself. Sure, it means paying a little more, but if there's more tax dollars available to keep more doctors in our country and such, then I'm on board. Am I missing something?

@ahyane Unfortunately it's not that simple, in BC it means that many things that were PST exempt before will no longer be because in the infinite wisdom of the taxman GST is charged on many kids items like bikes and skates, things that encourage kids to be active and healthy.
Now that gst is charged on those items, to make it simple HST will be charged on them, they won't be PST exempt anymore.
The HST tax credit is a joke, I think the family ceiling is $30K???
@Abdul I'm on board with doctors and teachers staying here too, I think it's time that everyone involved at any level of govt, whether they are politicians, managers or workers to do some belt tightening, I don't care what private industry is willing to pay people, these people are being paid tax dollars, there should be a ceiling.
If someone is spending beyond their means, it's not up to the employer to bail them out and give them a big raise, management or worker...I could go on for hours

I agree with you tho, if the gov't just tightened up their finances a little I bet we wouldn't need to consider this kind of thing. Do they really need to give themselves raises every time they hold session? And maybe making them work more than 40 some odd days a year would help. Jerks.
