  • Back when these assholes were on site for the event. Now they just sit in a box in North Carolina.

  • I'm pretty sure those chicanes don't have any sexual desire for anything, but if they did, and if they were gay, it wouldn't be a reason to call them out on it.

  • yeah lets conveniently forget the era Ford dominated doing the exact same thing they prasied the other manufatures for, fucking europe always hating

  • Awsome video. I personaly like the Toyota 88C-V, Nissan R89C, Jaguar XJR-9, Sauber Mercedes C9, and the Porche 956.

  • Anyone else see the Toyota 88c-v Minolta?

  • @Hotshotmech38 in 1989 there is the 89c-v minolta at le mans

  • @Hotshotmech38 I did!

  • I think the prototypes of today could possibly do more than 240mph in a slip stream.. I still would love to see these dam chicanes go.. I know they placed them in for safety, but there was nothing else like it... 3 miles of pure speed.. so awesome.

  • What was that ugly pink LM race car?

Aside from that, this had a great LM roster. The Jaguar XJR-9's return, the Sauber pwning all others, the Nissan R89C, one of my favorite race cars, and the '89 version of the Mazada race car before the 787B in 1991 thrust them into victory. 1988-1991 had the best cars.

  • @Limelight760 , That ugly car was the Joest Team Porsche that almost won the race.A problem with a water hose prevented it from winning.!

  • @Limelight760 Forget about the 60's?

  • i think porsche and mazda should bring back 2011 verisions of these class type race cars and they can kick the p1 class race cars butt

  • Silk Cut Jag's v C9's!

    Classic Le Mans

  • The chicanes from Hell was added in 1990.

  • I miss these days :(

Group C cars just had something so special about them.

I hate to say it, but Le Mans these days is boring compared to this.

  • For more Informations about the Porsche 962: dauer962.de

  • Jagwar? JAG-YOU-ER

  • go r89c!

  • "they put in the two gay chicanes on the Mulsanne" The chicanes as most already know was put in for safety reasons. That straight without the chicanes speeds mostly like could easily had been 250 mph. I love speed, but anything in my book that goes that fast belongs in the air.

  • Of course!!

At the beginning of the video they completely skip '66-'69 where the Ford GT40's dominated.

Plus, at 0:40 they mention the 956's feat of placing 1,2,3 in it's first LeMans. Well, the GT40's did that exact same thing, but the GT40's did it 16 years earlier!!

They shoulda gave credit where credit was due.

    ;D

  • No, Mercedes hit 405 that year. The speed record at the Mulsanne is 407 km/h, set ikn 1988. It was set during the race by a Team WM Peugeot car driven by Roger Dorchy. The car even had it's air intakes taped over to maximise its aerodynamics.

  • Mercedes does own it, Kenny Acheson has the record and was still accelerating, a monster the C-9

  • I read somewhere that Peugeot actually participated in Le Mans JUST to break 400km/s barrier. As soon as they reached 400km/s mark, they started drinking beers..

  • per SECOND? That means they'd be done with the Mulsanne in under a second...

  • haha, I mean km/h. I'm living in the world where a second matters so I sometimes typed "/s" unconsciously..

  • The Mercedes C9 holds Record of 408 Km/h in race...

  • wrong the highest mulssane speed was by a jaguar at 389 km an hour. mercedes had in practice 400 km

  • Ok didn't know that....

  • yes that year in practice was a mercedes at 400 km/h and in the race a jaguar at 389 km/h in 1988 the works porsche #17 was clocked in practice at 391 km/ h in the race ewas the wm peagout at 405 km/h

  • No, it was a Peugeot, not the C9.

  • 02:55 230mph! now thats what im talking about!

  • that year peugeot drove 407km/h there :O

  • Cheers for sharing, awesome vids!

  • Is it me or is that an early version of the Mazda 787B a bit of the way down the field?

  • Could be a 767B

  • Cool, I didn't know there was a sort of predecessor to the 787B.

  • lol....this is when ESPN liked showing real racing

  • Could someone tell these ESPN fools to STFU for one minute? I want to hear the cars, too.

  • Buy the official video instead!!!

  • Love the Minolta Toyota. Most advanced of all the cars there—the only one to have a 6 speed gearbox, if I'm right. But the Sauber C9 is the fastest...

  • Fuck the chicanes! 240+ MPH FTW!

  • @Atheismrulez now that is what i call fast

  • Those c9s kicked ass to.

  • Espn had auto racing coverage down back then. They showed everything. Even sent commentators to the track. Ain't done that in a long time.

  • Where there no gran touring class cars entered?

  • -------->minolta toyota

  • i liked this video :)

    lets chat 0S

  • Big deal about the chicanes...it's not hurt the drama of this race.

  • the original racing colours of germany are white not silver, the silver came from the great mercedes of the 1930s because it was a couple of kilos over the maximim weight they stripped the paint off leaving the silver aluminium bodywork hence the mercedes nickname "silver arrows". and the corner indianapolis has never been paved with bricks its called indianapolis because it is a left hand banked corner, its nothing like a real indianapolis corner but its had that name since le mans began

  • I never knew that the original German international racing colors were white instead of silver as we know it today. The Mulsanne was a beast back then without the chicanes when the Group C (IMSA GTP in the U.S.) cars were going well over 220mph. Didn't they have a seperate category for the IMSA GTP cars at LeMans in the late 80's though they still competed for the overall?

  • yeah its true, think i read about that in a book about le mans actually, britain was green france blue germany white and italy red cant remember what the US was. another interesting fact ferraris "colour" if you will is actually yellow (i presume from the yellow on the badge behind the prancing horse but they have always raced in the traditional red of italy. think the record was 248mph or something! yeah the IMSA class at le mans definately rings a bell im not sure though.

  • I think they did have a seperate class for the IMSA GTP cars because a lot of IMSA teams did go there. Back in the day when Briggs Cunningham raced the Corvettes at LeMans in the late 50's and early 60's or any other American team, their cars were painted in White with Two Navy Blue Stripes or Navy Blue with Two White stripes. The stripes were painted down the middle and another blue stripe was along the bottom of the cars. I think the Yellow was for Belgium and White & Red for Japan.

  • yeah im sure your right, i remember there something about being an IMSA trophy so that would make sense,. yeah your definatly right about america and japan, im sure the honda F1 car in the 60s was white with a red stripe? iv ever heard of any belgian cars so i cant comment on that!

  • is that bob varsha from speed on the commentary??

  • i feel like someone is taking a cheese grater to my ear drums. what happened to the commentators from porsche911gt1's footage of the '88 race?! these espn idiots are awful!!

  • The beginning of this sounds like music from old school japanese dragonball Z lol.

  • We have forgotten the legendary cars! why?

they ARE the real Achievements! Not the BORRING, SILENCED, CHEAT dieselcars!

  • lol

  • change or die, the ACO/IMSA aren't sitting in a box like NASCAR and are encouraging alternative fuels and relevant technology.

  • Bring back the mulsanne straight.

    The REAL mulsanne straight.

    Not that chicaned, neutered imposter.

  • yeah, let's do that, and see people go at 410km/h against the rail, or have a big puncture...

Dude, there's a reason why they are there, and it's more then justified. What I do think is a mistake are the Esses.

  • Was a reply to AdamJLemon

  • GROUP C IS KING

  • thanks for this

  • real shame ESPN speedworld doesnt do sports cars anymore like LeMans and ALMS.

  • old skool video

  • Comment removed

  • Here here.

  • @JoeytheHDK Do you even understand what Group C was? It was about fuel economy. In modern terms you would see gas-hybrids and turbo- diesels and guess what by 2012 you will see that at Le Mans in LMP. What's wrong with LMP, its the same thing, look at the 908 that's a modern day Group C car, if the chicanes where removed, it would go well over 230mph.

  • @JoeytheHDK I don't mind the LMPs, but I'd love to see a neck and neck battle between LMPs and Group Cs in future Le Mans.

And get those chicanes off the Mulsanne!

  • I just wish today Speed Channel would play more of these oldschool Leman races. Or better yet 90's Group A Touring car races too

  • jagwahr

  • look at 04:12 its the toyota minolta

there aren't any videos of it on youtube

and hardly any pics of it on the net

its a rare le mans care to find

came to my attention first from gt4 but there is hardly any real life videos or pics of it

  • As pooedcunt said, is the elder le mans cars, forgotten, but they where the fastest!!! fuck the Diesel cars!!!

  • I was wandering if this is the only class of GTP prototypes. No GTs in this race???

  • the three classes were C1, C2 and GTP. they were all prototypes. the only cars in the GTP category were the three Mazdas.

  • Well done porsche911GT1. this is the race that everyone wanted so badly. Was there no motors tv coverage?

  • motors tv only keep replaying the 1988, 1993, 1998 and 2003 races. and thats about it.

  • Varsha hasn't changed much since 1989... well maybe added some weight, but that's it!

Great race footage. Thanks for posting!

  • Your right. He really hasn't changed much in a while.

  • weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • nice about vid section

    "the two gay chicanes"

    lol
