At the moment you'll need a computer and a MIDI interface. All this thing does is send MIDI signals. You could also plug it into any MIDI sound source (e.g. a keyboard or sound module).
There's no reason why you couldn't add an oscillator circuit and hack the software a bit to make it into a proper sound source though.
