  • what a fucking boss. great song

  • what's that instrument?

  • @Brandon18valensi Banjo.

  • Ron Paul 2012

  • @AntiSocialChannel85 *sighs* The infection spreads...

  • Pete is ever-relevant.

  • lol pete is great although im in the military haha he has his points

  • Now this is a rebel artist, he´s not holding an electric guitar or have a crazy hair or breaking his instrument or yelling.

Hes playing a banjo and singing about truth and lies of a system

  • That's thee thing about political thought, the issues are universal regardless of place and time.

  • This guy is hardkore'

  • punk as fuck

  • that what i learned at school too now im in the military and its not that fun =(

  • Is this song supposed to be sarcastic? Honest question. I cannot tell.

  • @fetusgeek no, because in 1964, he was serious. It's sasd that in our time, it could be considered sarcasm

  • @fetusgeek I would describe it as biting social commentary. His point is that we teach our kids a pack of lies.

  • @fetusgeek Yes, very much so.

  • thanks :)

    got it :)

  • All these complaints.. If USA wouldn't be number one communism would have ruled the society!

  • @Plasticwin Which society are you talking about? Europe, it could of, You'd probably see communists in Italy, France and (with a smaller chance) in Britain, but communism couldn't of taken hold in the USA. Chances are if we lost the cold war we'd be fairly isolationist, we wouldn't spend nearly as much money on defense and would use said money for domesttic purposes, and the Soviet Union would collapse on it's own.

  • @Plasticwin Use proper grammar.

  • @Plasticwin Although not keen on the Soviet Union, Pete Seeger was and is a communist.

  • @Plasticwin And? One of the only problems with communism is corruption because human nature takes over everything, the only difference with capitalism is that capitalism embraces greed and corruption.

  • @QuinneyBoyz Depend, corruption is obvious in autoritarian communism but can't be in libertarian communism.

  • @QuinneyBoyz Embraces corruption? ... Not really at all?

It definetly embraces greed but corruption is not embraced. A company cannot thrive with corruption.

  • This stuff is still relevant. There's people standing out by wall street right now. The notion that we can change what's wrong with this country and the world by acknowledge that we the people can do that.

  • I'm not american and can't decide if this song is ironic, or patriotic?

  • @Emberakitmeglottek

Ironic. "Murderers die for their crime (even if we make mistakes some times)" from that point onward is so dripping with sarcasm that it's a wonder the mic didn't melt.

  • I am Kraetyz, and I approve of this song.

  • Love this song. Upbeat with a powerful message.

  • the point being? with that little diddy he summed it all up in 2 minutes of song, the rich get richer, and wow, we r all haven fun...

  • Government School = Government Propaganda

And you even have to pay for it with your property taxes.

This is like the bullet fee the family of executed have to pay to recover the body...

  • Too bad my fellow Americans won't listen to this song....

  • i hope people realise that its straight sarcasm.

  • Just to set the record straight, Pete Seeger didn't write this--Tom Paxton did. He's well worth the time to listen to.

  • I learned that murderers die for their crimes, even if we make a mistake sometimes..

  • It's like watching Mr. Rogers sing fuck the cops.

  • Almost 50 years later and still so relevant. I don't know if that is amazing or sad.

  • 35 people need to see their children die in combat.

  • thats one fuzzy sweater

  • Separate school and state.

  • @buddharocket Separate school from the government funding as well? I agree.

  • @SteveSbc406 Separating school from government funding would also separate most of this country's children from school.

  • @fireflygeek Separating school from FEDERAL government funding would, however, be beneficial.

  • @93mgobluefan Separating school from federal funding would lead to the next scientist being relegated to a Wal-Mart greeting.

  • 35 people need to grow up.

  • my mentor

  • An American hero. Old school punk rock

  • I'm happy to see this great video... In France, we discovered this song through a very good translation and version sung by Grame ALLWRIGHT (a singer born in New Zealand, but living in our country). I have sung this song for my friends in French for years and years...

  • @reneve31 I suppose it's fine for a minority of people to hold the views that Seeger does, but if his mindset was the prevailing mindset of this country we would have been conquered long ago, and/or would have never came into existence in the first place. Pacifism would be great in a perfect worls, but it's unrealistic. Every single person in the world could be a pacafist except for one, and that one is all it would take over the rest, because on one would resist him. This is the real world.

  • Great Pete.

  • Preach it, Pete.

The attitude that "my country is ALWAYS right, ALL the time" was and still is propagated in our schools more than you think. Pete (and Tom Paxton, the original songwriter) saw that for what it was: a lie, and a dangerous one at that. I'm going to school to be a teacher because American children are still being lied to, 47 years after this song was first written, and it's long past time the lies stopped.

  • fantastic song!

  • Always smile when you insult people, it'l piss 'em off.

  • A true patriot

  • That is an insanely cool looking banjo.

  • Sometimes when I look at hierarchy & suffering in the world, I start feeling doomed to the route of Phil Ochs or Doc Dart. But then I hear Pete Seeger & actually can see hope again.

  • Our leaders are the finest men, and we elect them again and again!

    Capitalist Fascists?

    I pledge allegiance...

    Thanks for posting

  • Thumbs up if you still listen to this in 2011 :D

  • It sounds so happy but it's sooo sad.

  • Irony used as power.

  • what instrument is he playing?

  • @Himynameisyellow Looks to me like some kind of homemade banjo.

  • @Himynameisyellow Ehh... Banjo.

  • @Himynameisyellow Fretless Banjo

  • Nowadays, the masses listen to Justin Bieber´s nonsense or wonder what Lady Gaga´s next outfit is gonna look like. Controlling the people has never been easier.

I am not exclusively talking about the USA (I´m German)!

  • Guitar RULE :D

  • Cut your Hair - keep America clean - I love the Film Alices Restaurant-

  • I heard his name but as a punk/hardcore musician, I didn't listen to him until TODAY. Pete Seeger is the original punk.

  • he looks so sad when he says "someday i might get my chance"

  • the people that disliked this obviously don't understand sarcasm

  • The way he delivers the line at 0:44 is awesome.

  • @TheKnightWhoSaysNI36 LOL, I wish you could :)

  • I love this man and I love this song. Observations: What instrument is he playing? It sounds like a bango, but appears to be made of wood, and looks homemade...Also, what's up with that sweater? (LOL) Finally, yea, the writer of this song was speaking ironically, and this song is fraught with sarcasm, but that doesn't mean it isn't true...unfortunately. (And that's what I learned in school.)

  • Pete Seeger has done more for this country than all of the crooked politicians that have ever served in office. A true American Hero, Thanks Pete. Peace be with you always.

  • This song is horribly depressing.

  • I think some people aren't getting that Pete is speaking ironically in this song.

  • <333333

  • I go to an Aussie high school. In Year 11 history last year I learned that imperialism and nationalism lead to wars, which are grim and destructive and lead to more wars.I learned that economic turmoil can lead a country to fascism. I learned that the 1950's US was sexist, racist and hypocritical when it came to their support of democracy. I learned that youth can rise up to challenge the status quo. I learned that George Bush's war wasn't really about terrorism

Wow, I had a good teacher

  • @SxcLilAussieBabe

As a German I can tell you: Your curriculum sounds pretty much like ours. I am glad to hear that =) The only problem here is: The U.S budget for the military is round about 40% of the whole world´s spending for "defence". There is only one superpower left. And it inflicts more damage (because of national interests) than it does good to the world.

  • @SxcLilAussieBabe Did your teacher also tell you that your country is leading the way in internet censorship and has been lobbying the American government to expand their military forces to bases in Australia because your country is worried about China's growing military presence?

  • @SxcLilAussieBabe no i'm afraid you had a total idiot for a teacher.... who needs to get their facts straight.

  • @eGoddess999 What are these "straight facts"? Please, educate us all.

  • @SxcLilAussieBabe i bet you're hot!!! now, if only you had some years to match, that would be the shit! do something about it, ok?

  • @SxcLilAussieBabe Huh, I learned that too..

  • pete it my hero

  • Happy Birthday Pete,

Thank you for telling the truth.

  • Happy birthday Pete!

  • @ElDuderino211 Would you rather that kids these days see America as what this song describes?

  • He turns 92 tomorrow

  • Comment removed

  • @ElDuderino211 Why don't you go get a teaching degree then and set things right? There sure as hell weren't any hippies and the public school I went to. At my school they taught creationism in art history class and told us AIDS was from their god in sex-ed.

  • nothing

  • Pete Seeger makes the Sex Pistols look like Pat Boone.

  • CeeKayzOrz-ie

That's what forming a better Union is all about? Get the Fuck Out?

How about if rather you Get the Fuck In?!

Plus, relax...those 'largest standing armies' are after water and are armed with buckets.

  • @CeeKayz0rz If by Purple Mountain's Majesty you mean corporate rule, and Amber Waves of Grey you mean violation of my 4th amendment rights, then I guess I should get the fuck out, because I most definitely hate those.

  • I learned that when you looked annoyed and you're singing you're using something called 'sarcasm'.

  • A lot of the so-called "folk" today should listen to this more. This is music that had something to say.

  • Still relevant.

  • this is some bullshit.

  • @limegreenqween14

How old are you - that you comment like this?

You are either too young to understand - or you are ........?

I appologize for beeing rude, but ignorance makes me angry!

  • @limegreenqween14 did they teach you that in school?

  • 30 people believe what they learned in school.

  • sonds like somthing dead kenndys or nofx would sing. in fact i might do a punk version.

  • I'm learning banjo just so I can sing this to my soon-to-be-born daughter.

  • This is the most bitingly sarcastic song I've ever heard, sung in the most cheerful and light-hearted tone I've ever heard.

    I LOVE it.

  • @fireflygeek I suppose it's fine for a minority of people to hold the views that Seeger does, but if his mindset was the prevailing mindset of this country we would have been conquered long ago, and/or would have never came into existence in the first place. Pacifism would be great in a perfect worls, but it's unrealistic. Every single person in the world could be a pacafist except for one, and that one is all it would take over the rest, because on one would resist him. This is the real world.

  • @SteveSbc406 Seeger wasn't a pacifist, friend. He rather famously wasn't a pacifist. He even put that exact line in one of his songs ('Bring 'Em Home', which can be listened to on the right side of the screen over there). He just didn't believe in the glorification of violence, and though he understood it as occasionally necessary he also saw it as senseless and hateful and as something to never be taken lightly.

  • @fireflygeek Indeed, he famously was one of the few singers to keep the music of the spanish revolutionaries when Franco was stamping it out, to the point that some people would smuggle his record through France just to hear these songs again.

  • he's amazing! the simplicity and irony in the song is SO enchanting <3

  • I have followed Pete for close to 50 years. Whatever else he was, is or may become, he has always been an ambassador of music and free thought and opinion. You are entitled to your opinion - just check your "head" and make sure it is your own and not "what you learned in school today".

I have often grumbled about my 87 year old mother being opinionated but have always admired the fact that her opinions are her own.

  • what the f%$#@ is this song

  • Pete Seeger, Best Friend working person ever had.

  • A man who actually thought something before someone else told him it was ok to think.

  • As sarcastic as Pete was being here, he was accidentally right a few times. We are free in this country, certainly more free than people in the commie countries that Pete admired so much. Policemen ARE usually are people's friend, I'd sure want my kids to run to a cop if they were lost or being chased by a pervert. And is Pete saying we shouldn't have fought in WWII? Well, I guess he has that opinion in common with Pat Buchanan.

  • @newsduke Is Pat Buchanon a communist too? Fill me in. I'm trying to learn atm. I guess I'm a slow learner since my notion of freedom of expression doesn't coincide with the general idea of conformism. What I do know (or think I know - I'm not sure) is that questioning can sometimes (I know it sounds unlikely) lead to progression even if one is - in the beginning and at the end - wrong. I respect what you said (even if you atm want to hit me in the head with a frying pan). WW2. Not what he meant

  • @SuperZerodotcom, no Pat isn't a commie. The only comparison I was making is that he also thought we should stay out of WWII. And Pete was absolutely against fighting the Nazis, at least at first. And while I agree that conformism used to be a bigger problem in the U.S. than it is now, we still had nothing on the commies, who imprisoned or killed people who didn't conform to the party line. But I support Pete's right to question things. To be fair, Pete later changed his mind about Stalinism.

  • @SuperZerodotcom, no, I'm not offended at all. Please don't hit yourself with a frying pan. Sounds painful. We're just talking, that's all. Anyway, Pete's initial reluctance to oppose the Nazis because they had a peace pact with Stalin soon went away, and Pete's support of Stalin eventually went away too. But he correctly kept his commitment to racial equality. So, Pete meant well. It's not like he ever got anyone killed and it was a long time ago, so what the hell.

  • @newsduke this was made in 1964

  • hey pete

  • Well there is only one thing i have to say.

ALL WE ARE SAYING IS GIVE PETE THE PRIZE!

  • 1964 = this song

2008 = hero of war by rise against

  • best english song = he sing so fast, not likly one back 60's maybe :D

  • O yeah, march 3rd is march for islam/caliphate day. Thats great of course. The middle east is falling apart and you will see more and more "islamic revolutions" there. Dont worry about it though. They only want to establish a new caliphate and enslave the infidels. Thats what theyve been doctrined with. We got the commies and socialists trying to take advantage of our hard times at home. Dont worry though im sure its all going to work out great!! This is not even the tip of the iceberg

  • What's interesting is that school's seem to glorify war less today than back then. We still teach that the government is never wrong though.

  • Pete Seeger. The original folk-punk artist.

  • @jgrannell1 him and Woody Guthrie. the original punks

  • @jgrannell1 we need more singers like him in the modern day.

  • @jgrannell1 HELL YEAH! :D

  • @jgrannell1

HAHAHAHA. thank you for that, i had a good deep long laugh on that one.

  • This is some classy trolling.

  • Trolling: 1964 style.

  • Art of trolling?

  • the corporate culture of the sunset is any virtue and happiness, whether communism, fascism, monarchy, democracy or capitalism is ..... What fights peter seeger? I think for the most adventurous nothing that mankind has ever created .... the collectivization of the corporate culture ... still very beautiful music

  • .. you're lucky if you have ... of communism, the illusion that everyone can have equal and much .... but what happens when everyone can have everything at any time ... The sinking of what mankind and his need to live the same functions to maintain ...

  • btw everything you said on race is wrong. humanity has developed very minuscule physical differences based on only a few thousand years of environmental adaptation. there is absolutely zero difference in brain size, function, structure, and capacity, amongst human races. difference in behavior amongst races is entirely cultural and socially constructed. to attach behavior to physical difference is unscientific, illogical, and elementary.

r u going to tell me the earth is flat next? lol

  • I am a "westerner" if thats the distinction you wanna make. you know how i kno you dont know very much about government? communism = shitty and unamerican. that statement doesn't support the claim that you know more about anything, it does show however that you've obviously never studied political science, and dont know what communism is beyond what the media or your granddaddy told you.

also, plz enlighten me on how islam is dangerous i'd love to know your take on this one lol

  • Dangerous to us westerners anyways. It might be different since its not your problem...yet

  • Your a clown. The racist bit is somewhat true. I dont hate other races, but I dont think all races are the same. Races evolved different, you can look at them and see that. So theres no reason to believe our minds evolved the same. I personally believe Native Europeans got the best end of the deal. Im pretty certain i know more about governments than you and communism is shitty and unamerican in every way. Islam is very dangerous. You'd be a fool to think otherwise.

  • @TheDream85

All races of humanity are nearly indistinguishable. The difference between all humans on a nucleotide level is about 0.1%. Culturally, humans can be very different. Society has little to do with evolution beyond the most basic, instinctive level of social interaction.

Regarding the "dangers" of Islam, radicalized, fundamentalist Islam only became influential over the minority which currently practice it in the 1950s, and note the word: "minority." Your information is flawed.

  • @TheDream85 It's actually impossible to tell what race someone is by their genetic structure. You can tell skin colour, for sure, but an individual who seems in every way to be from Northern Europe when you look at him will have bits and pieces that appear to put him from all over the globe. As was said, the changes are minuscule; minuscule enough to be as easily attributed to random mutation. Not only are all 'races' fundamentally the same, but the concept of race itself is false.

  • @thedream85 lol first you don't understand what communism is (and for the love of all intelligent people plz dont say USSR and PRC). second you don't understand the difference between islam and theocracy. I'm not even debating with you on this till you at least google some of it lol.

thanks for the racist bit too, it really captures your way of thinking lol

  • PS. of course i dont believe everything the govt says. They've betrayed us all with their lies about multiculturalism and diversity. Show me ONE society in the history of mankind that excelled because they had "diversity". Europe will be majority muslim in 50 years and the U.S. will be mostly blacks and mexicans. Sounds like a great time.....We see how they live and do things in their native countries. Thats what we get to look forward too. You can thank diversity for that.

  • PS. of course i dont believe everything the govt says. They've betrayed us all with their lies about multiculturalism and diversity. Show me ONE society in the history of mankind that excelled because they had "diversity". Europe will be majority muslim in 50 years and the U.S. will be mostly blacks and mexicans. • @TheDream85 Damn, do you think they might have more people like Niel Degrasse Tyson (the dark kind) hosting pop-sci shows instead of people like Carl Sagan? Really though, do you ever feel embarrassed by your ignorance? You know there are free courses offered by UC Berkeley, MIT, Yale etc. ON YOUTUBE? If you want to actually educate yourself on cognitive psychology, sociology and history and have an actual (non-fictional) view of how the world works, that opportunity is at your fingertips.

  • The problem is this....America is built on freedom and individual rights, BUT you can't use that freedom to destroy freedom and individual rights. Thats exactly what communism and islam and so many other things do. NOBODY seems to understand this anymore. You get to practice freedom of religion...so as long as your religion doesnt impose on other peoples freedom. Can you understand this?? Same thing with communism. The easiest way to destroy democracy is with democracy.

  • ps @thedream85 a self proclaimed communist is still a communist

  • @thedream85 "built on freedom and individual rights" you said it yourself bud. freedom to disagree with capitalism and be a communist. freedom to practice islam..... and christianity for that matter. you may agree with the capitalist system but im sure you dont agree 100% with everything the U.S. government does? hm? people are so f***ing stupid because they refuse to hear anything outside their own narrow view

  • @TheJanance05, He was a self proclaimed communist. Get your facts straight dummy. @pineau4, You are an absolute fool. America is a Capitalist Nation, built on Freedom and individual rights. Communism and Islamism are INCOMPATIBLE with WHAT AMERICA IS (or was). You cant bring your "legitimate political ideology" to america because there is no room for it here. Why the f*** are people so stupid??

  • @thedream85 communism is a legitimate political ideology. just like anarchism is a legitimate political ideology, just like brown/black is a legitimate skin color, just like Islam is a legitimate religion. its unfortunate that many americans who r incapable of thinking for themselves will discriminate against these groups

try not blindly believing authority figures sometime

  • According to McCarthy, America was full of communist. In retrospect many of the alleged and convicted were later determined to be innocent. Pete Seeger was one such person, douche. Get your facts right.

  • @TheJanance05 Actual Pete still is a communist. "I still call myself a communist, because communism is no more what Russia made of it than Christianity is what the churches make of it. "

McCarthy's flaw wasn't only its misidentifying communists, but the notion that anyone who opposed those in power, who thought workers are the equals of bosses was un-american. The labeling of honest folk as un-american because they wouldn't bow down to the boss was it's main flaw.

  • Cool Banjo!

  • This man was a member of the communist party. Hardly a true american hero, as so many claim. Dumb Dumbs

  • @TheDream85 Being part of a legitimate political party automatically makes a person a villain eh? Did you learn that in school today?

  • Wow, school was bullshit back then! XD

  • @TheUnitedBoners

    Has it really gotten better?

Do they teach you to respect people who work with their hands? or is corporate drone the goal?

    Different lies, same liars.

  • does anyone know what tuning Pete is using here?

Doesn't seem like standard G tuning.

  • when our soldiers returned home from our war of Independence, they found that the only thing that had changed was that the politicians now called themselves americans.

Otherwise, the rich still owned everything, and the rent was still due on the first of the month.

  • I would like to belive America can live up to this song. please help my country.

  • Great man!

  • I can't wait to play this for my daughter when she's born this June. No sense in telling her everything's perfect for the first sixteen years only to have AP US History leave her totally disillusioned and angsty.

  • @gcamiloc092 ............?

  • didn't knew pete's son was george

  • This song describes one of my brothers quite well :(

  • WTF happend to America?

  • I learned that all this is a lie...=*(

  • @LyraM13 ......lol ur argument is 100% a logical fallacy
