Keep it stock. There are enough V6 Birds and Camaros that have fart-bomb mufflers. They just don't sound good and do little to nothing for power. And the headers that someone suggested is a bad idea. It'll cost you in torque and they're only helpful in terms of power when you're driving at WOT, i.e. trying to take a .01 time off the 1/4 on the strip. If you get a new exhaust make it something real like Borla. Just my take on it. Nice car.
flowmasters actually have the least flow out of any of the brands...i have a magnaflow with pacesetters, high flow cat, it has a pretty deep noise for a v6 with almost no rasp...magnaflow has some of the most flow of any brand...i would suggest magnaflow...also another mod is to remove the intake resonator which is the giant black box in front of the throttle body...put some pvc in its place and you will receive better air flow and also a throatier exhaust note
You should do Flowmaster exhaust, its only $300.Borla is a better exhaust, but 3 times the cost of Flowmaster, same horsepower gains with different sound. Stainless steel headers are also only $300.
I dont know if you have done anything to your car since the 972 veiws, or if anybody has suggested ideas for exhaust systems or anything but just to make a suggestion : for a descent muffler, flowmaster is a real good brand, an 80 series or 40 series are nice and right around 100 bucks, also headers,Pacesetter headers are popular with this car type, and if you have the money, along with muffler and headers, upgrade the piping from stock 2.25' to 2.5' for a deeper, less raspier, sound
@RyanMarine if you want a deeper sounding exhaust , Id suggest a Borla Xr-1 muffler , or better yet a TSP rumbler cat . no rasp , pure sex..
its what will be going in my car along with FFF longtube headers.. theres a car here on youtube that runs the latter setup , without a doubt the best sounding NA firebird !
Ah, sounds like you want to make a project of it. :)
Currently I have a 3" magnaflow catback system on my 3.8 and it sounds nice. Not too obnoxious but deep. I'm currently working on posting a video of an in-cabin cruise.
Trust me you don't want to turbocharge it. It's not worth how much you're laying down while you could get a meatier sounding lt1 or ls1. That's all I have for suggestions at this point.. Not thinking much
new exhaust all in all your out about 7 grand, so you could take this v6, trade it in for an ls1 car, and save yourself several grand, not to mention, a hell of a swap.
@1flynlow If he sold this old v6 car he wouldn't get very much. Roughly 2 grand at the most. So do you expect him to add that 2Grand to a Camaro, Trans Am, GTO, or Vette? By your logic he would be better off getting 2G for his car and putting it towards a LS1 car. Lets say he found a 2004 GTO. With 75,000 Miles? Fair condition pricing for a car like that is ranges 10 to 16Grand. So 7Grand on dropping an LS1 in his Firebird VS The 2G for his car and the rest he will need for a new car.
@1flynlow Also. A quick call to a local engine shop quoted me $4,560 for a LS1 Engine and Transmission. They said both are in good condition and only have 50,000+ miles on them.
i was not talking about a new (er) vette or gto, but rather a camaro or firebird of the same year. and i said trade it in, not sell it. I dont believe you could find a car as good as his for only 2 grand. though, granted, you would get more by selling it than trading it in.
I know you can buy an ls1 2001 camaro for 9000K with 82k miles on it, cause i did.
the same place had a v6 firebird of same year for 6000. thats a 3k difference, so the swap wouldn't really be worth it.
@xs1ner Well one i agree with you, I'm not going to trade or sell it no point, not unless I manage to come up with 10k to get a nice Trans Am haha, I'd much rather convert it to a T/A then to buy one though, 1. It's more fun to do the work yourself, make it the way YOU want it, not a car thats already made and your scared to anything to. and 2. Even if I don't decide to put an LS1 in it, hell the V6 is good enough, Better gas anyway, but still theres plenty of mods to do i would assume.
@hallal55 well one, no matter what the V6 is better on gas, but if thats not an issue, you can read the other comments on the video lol, It takes time to do stuff like that, you'll need a few more things then just the engine, like a new PCM and stuff for the LS1 goto fullthrottlev6 website look it up on there, they know everything lol but if you keep the V6 I'd go Air intake, Super,or Turbocharged and upgraded coilover suspension to lower the car slightly and have better handling
@RyanMarine in order to turbo charge or supercharge the engine would i need to upgrade anything else so the engine can handle it? like intercooler, intake, and suspension?
@xs1ner Plenty of Exterior mods and Interior mods to do anything, it's not like i plan on racing on the city anyways, but looks are what really matters plus a new Exhaust would give it a great sound.

@footagecrew2009 Thanks for the idea, didn't think about the piping but I will do that, i'd like it to be deeper sounding

I would say mod the engine. If you have the smarts you can find a v8 block for this car easy.

all the costs of the swap are NOT worth it. trade it for an ls1 car if thats what you want.

@1flynlow all the costs ARE worth it if you can do it yourself..... lol?
xs1ner 1 year ago
ok. .. lets count
used transmission= $1000 about
used engine (GOOD CONDITION) -4,000
all the other shit (radiator, and stuff)
new exhaust all in all your out about 7 grand, so you could take this v6, trade it in for an ls1 car, and save yourself several grand, not to mention, a hell of a swap.

@RyanMarine hey i was thinking about gettin gthe firebird 3.8 found a nice one for 5000K and trans ams are like 10+
can i buy a ls1 engine and swap since both firebird and trans share RWD probably similar suspsension...?
or do i need to upgrade anything?
or should i just slap on intake, intercooler, and supercharger?
