To the comment below-these horses can't just stop. They aren't normal horses. You can't just pull back and stop. If you pull back on the reins, they go faster actually. These are race horses not trail horses and if they did stop, their muscles would completely lock up and cramp then seizures because these horses aren't bred to just stop. That why when the race is finished and they have crossed the line, they let them keep running til they choose to slowdown.

Both the horses died. As for blaming the outrider, it's easy for someone who's never tried to catch a loose horse in the blinding rain on a deep track to critique. I say kuddos to the outrider for pulling to the outside to avoid his horse colliding with the field. Sad day for all concerned.

Jesus christ!! this makes me cringe during the impact. I saw a thing about stacey she is doing okay trying to live her life partially disabled both physically and mentally from this severe accident. the horses died
Ok, one, that was a BRUTAL accident. Two, it was just that, an accident. There should not have been a loose horse running the wrong way on the track. No one can say for sure if the jockey knew that the loose horse was there or not. If the announcer did not announce it(one would think he would, stop the race or something), but the announcer might not have seen it either.
The fault is not stacey's..she was doing her JOB--riding her assigned horse. There was no way she could have controlled, or prevented or even foreseen another horse coming directly at her on that racetrack, especially during a race. This is rare moment of a very unfortunate event in Thoroughbred racing.
I'm sorry, but my sympathy is with the horses here. Stacey should have known better. A little conversation with animal advocates and perhaps she wouldn't have been there. I don't believe it, as jockeys just don't seem to care about the horses, but we can hope. i've got a question , which is very important for me. so please could anyone , who was there when it happened, tell me : did both horses die ? ( i know, that the jockey is alive :))
I live in Phx az and I was there that day . There was no safety laspe or any thing they could have done to prevent this. 1st off prescott was a "bull ring" oval track ,it has sinced closed and they have a new facility in prescott valley. "bull rings" are generally 5/8 th mile tracks instead of normal 1 mile ovals ex.... in a 6 furlongs sprint you will pass the wire twice that really makes it dangerous when you have fallen horses and riders.
I think the rider get what she deserved! Everyone acts like, Well she is lucky to be alive.. No she knew what she as getting into! The only one that I feel sorry for are the horses, bred and trained to literally comit suicide either by accident or being trained to young! Their bones are not even completely developed til they are 5!
@horse? Give me one good reason why you despise Matz so much. Why because of Barbaro's breakdown? I applaud him for not vigorously racing Barbaro so much during what little of a campaign he had. After all he believed in having fresh horses. Oh and this is not the Grand Prix Circuit. Things are done differently there. Horses int his sport usually reach their peak at 3 or 4.
@Kulaness Fairness on the track and the feeling of people all over the country who are coming to realize that this "sport" has fatal flaws. The public is beginning to realize that they shouldn't have to watch horses die so they can win stupid bets. It has nothing to do with the welfare of animals, unless it impacts the bottom line which it, apparently, has.
@Kulaness One answer...stud fees. They are not allowed to collect from racing Thoroughbreds, so they have to be alive to command fees. The fact that Michael Matz is involved in this "sport" makes me just sick; he knows better, given that the horses in his previous sport were considered young at EIGHT. I no longer consider him a professional horseman, as he is now just in it for the money. That says a lot, given that I respected him for many years on the Grand Prix circuit.
@BreekeSugarshock there dead. sorry to say that but they are. i saw this clip on animal planet and they said both of the horse's heads hit so hard that they died instantly. Its such a shame. ='(
@Micky37167 Holly fuck that is harsh!! that stupid fucking horse running towards the racing horses, caused this accident! fuck!! anyhow... was the rider ok??
@27suzukirider eh not really... after that they rushed her to the hospital. there she stayed in a coma for five days. they all thought she was going to die. but finally she woke up and she had to basically had forgotten how to do everything, such as walking, talking, etc. she also lost all of her memories about the trash. after that she still never was the same. =""( sorry to say it that way but it was really misreable.
@27suzukirider sadly the horse died and the rider is okay with some brain damage. The rider should have died, IMO. It's not the horse's fault they're trained to participate in competitions they will never fully understand.
@Kulaness Again, you have given me no reason for this so-called sport. I have not had ONE of my personal horses die from a broken bone or other preventable injury. Perhaps that is because I did not subject them to dangerous sports. They trusted me to take care of them and not put them in harm's way. I take that sort of responsibility seriously. Racing is about business and pride; not about loving horses, no matter what you tell yourself.
@Kulaness So all you are telling me is that you do it for some other reason, which still makes no sense? You run horses before they are physically ready to run-for glory? If it isn't about money, it's about glory. Either way, the horses pay the price. I, by the way, am a person who watched a horse die on the track in front of them at Saratoga 30 yrs ago and will NEVER attend another horse race, nor endorse this horrible "sport" since I learned you DO NOT RUN horses at 2 yrs.
@Kulaness People who love horses understand that you do not race horses at such a young age. Their bones are developed enough to withstand that pressure. People who love and respect horses would NOT do this. Racing is about money and nothing else. You're dreaming if you believe otherwise.
@aloozer - The runaway horse, Pacific Wind, was in the race, stumbled, flipped over its own head, threw its jockey (he was fine) and got confused. These horses are trained to run on the track and since after burying its head in the mud falling down, it was practically blind, as all the other horses were from splatter in their faces. It just did what it was trained to do: run.
@HyperHorsegirl99 it should have run together with the pack, why did it not? that was my question. besides, that horse racing club should have had proper safety precautions put in place lest risking crazy things like these to happen. like not even opening the barrier gates thereby commencing the race if it had runaway like that.
@aloozer - You obviously don't understand. The race was already underway when the horse got loose because it was a horse in THAT race. It was confused after it fell and threw its jockey. It was at the back of the pack (so no one saw it) and spun around a full 180 degrees in the mud when it slipped. It just got up and ran the way it was facing, because it couldn't see with all the mud on its face. They did everything they could and since then have put in place more procedures for safety.
@DancesWidWolvez - Do you even know the full situation? The runaway horse was in the race, lost its footing and its jockey, got confused and got up to run the other way. The horse seen chasing it was a desperate attempt to catch Pacific Wind. The announcer was yelling to watch out the whole time. The track did all it could besides not run the race at all. If you suggest running the race in an hour, the track would still have been sloppy and the accident still could have happened.
poor jockey??? he didnt die but both horses did... how about poor horses?? he is paralized bow but atleast hes alive which is good but poor horses died...
poor jockey??? he didnt die but both horses did... how about poor horses?? he is paralized bow but atleast hes alive which is good but poor horses died...
Oh....my.....goodness.... That is horrible!! I wonder how bad the rider was injured? Can you imagine how bad the person must feel who lost control of the horse running the opposite direction?
if anyone thinks horse racing is cruelty well its not because i had a racehorse and he got into a big accident and ended up having to be put down but he loved racing and he died from what he loved doing he was my racehorse and i still cry to this day so horse racing really is not cruelty
It's a tough sport. Usually the horses get more sympathy than the jockeys, but the jockeys don't have an easy ride. Yes they have a choice, but everyone needs to make a living somehow.
Though I tend to agree that limiting the height of fences still leaves plenty of excitement - and let's face it, plenty to gamble on which is the main reason for the popularity of the sport.
Sorry I have been around horses most all my life, I'm a certified instructor and a trainer, and have rehabed plenty of OTTB's. I have never dealt with a horse that would just run head on into something, even in a panic. And I have worked with plenty of panicky horses. And I never said the horse was trying to "look pretty" Where did you come up with that???
I suppose the loose horse could have been too distracted to be looking where it was going.
I can't believe that neither horse even tried to slow down or swerve. Especially the loose horse ran through a crowd of horses going the other way and never even checked it's pace.
i own a ex racehorse, and he was never in bad state they are treated in luxery and tb are breed to race so itgs not tight and this is oviously a accident. <3 x
@chibiusa1992 i somewhat agree, but i know at least half a dozen ex-race horses that have been adopted and saved from being sent to the slaughter house to be made into DOG FOOD AND GLUE because THEY WEREN'T FAST ENOUGH
some racing isn't cruel, when there are loving owners and trainers, but most horse racing has that dark side.
@chibiusa1992 No racing is cruelty because the horses are broken and ridden at 2 years old - 3 years before they should be. Horses may die in showjumping, but they're well trained and broken properly, and showjumper can be turned into a dressage horse within months. Where as a racer takes years of re-training. That is, if they haven't already suffered some sort of leg or back problems.
@immustbemo not all racehorses are broken and ridden at 2. Some wait a year til the horse is more mature at 3. A horse can be broken at two years old and still be trained properly. It's all in the trainer that's been hired. Racehorses almost NEVER have back problems, the only pressure on their backs is far below the 20% of their body weight that they can humanely handle. you are ignorant if you believe that the death of a showjumping horse is any more cruel than the death of a racehorse.
@chibiusa1992 You idiot. The track was a disgrace, the risk of an injury was ten times as high! They were running through water! Did you notice that? People like you are the reason these things happen-you're too selfish to see anyone but yourself.
@letsdance0 but what you fail to realize is that no one went out on that track hoping to have their horse or jockey hurt. If conditions were too nasty the racing card would have been canceled for the day. I am most certainly not the reason these things happen, and I'm for sure not a selfish person, what an ignorant thing to say! morale of the story: accidents happen, even if they are EXTREMELY unfortunate. It's upsetting that, that happened in the race, but in the end it was an accident.
OKay well yea theres 2 differnt kind of horse jumping,
Theres the 6+ and above jumping and the 5 fott and below.. Im fine with 5 foot and lower but i think fgoing higher than that is just ridicoulous.
And those people should be unemloyed for mistreating horses, and those horses can go to retirment homes or they should just stop breeding so many horses in HOPE that they will be good race horses
@debbyryanfan3000 - They showed it on Animal Planet tonight on Untamed and Uncut. It told the whole story, not just this one minute drivel. The jockey quit her job as a teacher to follow her dream. The rain and mud made the horses and jockeys essentially blind. The runaway horse slipped and fell early in the race, throwing its jockey. There's a lot that isn't in this clip, and to see Stacy walk and speak even though she wasn't predicted to live at all is amazing.
I worked at a racetrack for 5 years. We called this accident a "turn-back" where a loose horse is headed towards a pack. Usually they're just trying to go home. It happens, I've risked my life to prevent it and I've had nightmares about it. As now does the outrider you can see peeling off. I've stood on a race-track mid-race trying to prevent it. You know you're living on the edge when they're coming at U in both directions. I wish, with all my heart, the rider best wishes on their recovery.

After all he believed in having fresh horses. Oh and this is not the Grand Prix Circuit. Things are done differently there. Horses int his sport usually reach their peak at 3 or 4.

didnt the one that was racing die of shock or did the loose horse and the racing one both die that way? i heard this on the news.
xxTraditionalsxx 1 year ago
@Kulaness Fairness on the track and the feeling of people all over the country who are coming to realize that this "sport" has fatal flaws. The public is beginning to realize that they shouldn't have to watch horses die so they can win stupid bets. It has nothing to do with the welfare of animals, unless it impacts the bottom line which it, apparently, has.
horseA123 1 year ago
@Kulaness One answer...stud fees. They are not allowed to collect from racing Thoroughbreds, so they have to be alive to command fees. The fact that Michael Matz is involved in this "sport" makes me just sick; he knows better, given that the horses in his previous sport were considered young at EIGHT. I no longer consider him a professional horseman, as he is now just in it for the money. That says a lot, given that I respected him for many years on the Grand Prix circuit.

@Micky37167 Holly fuck that is harsh!! that stupid fucking horse running towards the racing horses, caused this accident! fuck!! anyhow... was the rider ok??
27suzukirider 1 year ago
@27suzukirider eh not really... after that they rushed her to the hospital. there she stayed in a coma for five days. they all thought she was going to die. but finally she woke up and she had to basically had forgotten how to do everything, such as walking, talking, etc. she also lost all of her memories about the trash. after that she still never was the same. =""( sorry to say it that way but it was really misreable.
Micky37167 1 year ago
@27suzukirider sadly the horse died and the rider is okay with some brain damage. The rider should have died, IMO. It's not the horse's fault they're trained to participate in competitions they will never fully understand.

dafnai3 1 year ago
@Kulaness Again, you have given me no reason for this so-called sport. I have not had ONE of my personal horses die from a broken bone or other preventable injury. Perhaps that is because I did not subject them to dangerous sports. They trusted me to take care of them and not put them in harm's way. I take that sort of responsibility seriously. Racing is about business and pride; not about loving horses, no matter what you tell yourself.
horseA123 1 year ago

You're dreaming if you believe otherwise.

how did that horse run into that direction in the 1st place.
aloozer 1 year ago
@aloozer I guess that the horse might have spooked a little and ran in the other direction
Bloo445 1 year ago
@aloozer - The runaway horse, Pacific Wind, was in the race, stumbled, flipped over its own head, threw its jockey (he was fine) and got confused. These horses are trained to run on the track and since after burying its head in the mud falling down, it was practically blind, as all the other horses were from splatter in their faces. It just did what it was trained to do: run.
HyperHorsegirl99 1 year ago
@HyperHorsegirl99 it should have run together with the pack, why did it not? that was my question. besides, that horse racing club should have had proper safety precautions put in place lest risking crazy things like these to happen. like not even opening the barrier gates thereby commencing the race if it had runaway like that.
aloozer 1 year ago
@aloozer - You obviously don't understand. The race was already underway when the horse got loose because it was a horse in THAT race. It was confused after it fell and threw its jockey. It was at the back of the pack (so no one saw it) and spun around a full 180 degrees in the mud when it slipped. It just got up and ran the way it was facing, because it couldn't see with all the mud on its face. They did everything they could and since then have put in place more procedures for safety.

dicapriohorselover 1 year ago
It is the Tracks fault.
1) That horse should have never been loose
2) In that case, the race should have been called off and restarted in like 1 hour.
Seriously, because these idiots, 2 horses died
DancesWidWolvez 1 year ago
@DancesWidWolvez - Do you even know the full situation? The runaway horse was in the race, lost its footing and its jockey, got confused and got up to run the other way. The horse seen chasing it was a desperate attempt to catch Pacific Wind. The announcer was yelling to watch out the whole time. The track did all it could besides not run the race at all. If you suggest running the race in an hour, the track would still have been sloppy and the accident still could have happened.

if anyone thinks horse racing is cruelty well its not because i had a racehorse and he got into a big accident and ended up having to be put down but he loved racing and he died from what he loved doing he was my racehorse and i still cry to this day so horse racing really is not cruelty

I suppose the loose horse could have been too distracted to be looking where it was going.
jmdnarri 1 year ago
I can't believe that neither horse even tried to slow down or swerve. Especially the loose horse ran through a crowd of horses going the other way and never even checked it's pace.

wow GREAT idea.
then we will unemploy millions of people around the world,
and leave thousands of horses with no where to go!
People get injured in every sport.
do you think horse jumping is cruelty? you probably don't, but horses die there, and people are fatally injured all the time.
None of this is cruelty, nor is horse jumping, no owner sends there horse out to die. They are accidents, very unfortunate accidents.
chibiusa1992 2 years ago 16
@chibiusa1992 i somewhat agree, but i know at least half a dozen ex-race horses that have been adopted and saved from being sent to the slaughter house to be made into DOG FOOD AND GLUE because THEY WEREN'T FAST ENOUGH
some racing isn't cruel, when there are loving owners and trainers, but most horse racing has that dark side.

bombomb09 1 year ago
@chibiusa1992 very well put:] finally someone who sees the same way i do.
ffalcons102 1 year ago
@chibiusa1992 No racing is cruelty because the horses are broken and ridden at 2 years old - 3 years before they should be. Horses may die in showjumping, but they're well trained and broken properly, and showjumper can be turned into a dressage horse within months. Where as a racer takes years of re-training. That is, if they haven't already suffered some sort of leg or back problems.
immustbemo 1 year ago
@immustbemo not all racehorses are broken and ridden at 2. Some wait a year til the horse is more mature at 3. A horse can be broken at two years old and still be trained properly. It's all in the trainer that's been hired. Racehorses almost NEVER have back problems, the only pressure on their backs is far below the 20% of their body weight that they can humanely handle. you are ignorant if you believe that the death of a showjumping horse is any more cruel than the death of a racehorse.
chibiusa1992 1 year ago
@chibiusa1992 No, the horses had back problems as they are broken so young, meaning their back muscels have not had time to develop.
immustbemo 1 year ago
@chibiusa1992 keep your opinions to yourself- otherwise you'll seriously regret it

@dingoDogMan who do you think you are? It's the internet honey, I'm allowed to state my opinions. Don't threaten me.
chibiusa1992 1 year ago
@chibiusa1992 You idiot. The track was a disgrace, the risk of an injury was ten times as high! They were running through water! Did you notice that? People like you are the reason these things happen-you're too selfish to see anyone but yourself.
letsdance0 1 year ago
@letsdance0 but what you fail to realize is that no one went out on that track hoping to have their horse or jockey hurt. If conditions were too nasty the racing card would have been canceled for the day. I am most certainly not the reason these things happen, and I'm for sure not a selfish person, what an ignorant thing to say! morale of the story: accidents happen, even if they are EXTREMELY unfortunate. It's upsetting that, that happened in the race, but in the end it was an accident.
chibiusa1992 1 year ago
OKay well yea theres 2 differnt kind of horse jumping,
Theres the 6+ and above jumping and the 5 fott and below.. Im fine with 5 foot and lower but i think fgoing higher than that is just ridicoulous.
And those people should be unemloyed for mistreating horses, and those horses can go to retirment homes or they should just stop breeding so many horses in HOPE that they will be good race horses

debbyryanfan3000 2 years ago
