That mountain is insanely difficult. It kills the highest % of climbers out of any mountain (~40%)... Which is saying sometime because only the best even attempt Annapurna.
Very exhilarating to watch these videos on Youtube to be able to climb up the mountain vicariously through these brave climbers only to then Google the names and find out that many have died on one mountain or another sinse, a sense of guilt and sadness ensues.
Absolutely stunning and scary scenes. Just to be in the vicinity of this mountain would be more than enough for me. Much as I like challenges this would be a death wish for anyone other than a very experienced climber. Hats off to the Polish team for giving us this magnificent video production.
Piotr Pustelnik has reached Annapurna summit,. He has become the third Polish climber to complete the 14x8000ers, after Jerzy Kukuczka and Krzysztof Wielicki.
@liquids1987 There's no denying that there are much harder climbs than everest, but it's not like everest is a cakewalk. It's still a bloody hard climb, especially if you're not approaching it expedition style. I should note, this is all based on reading. I've never been up there personally, so I could be wrong.
The reason it is so dangerous as you can see is the sheer and steep face. You are always exposed. If an avalanche doesn't sweep you off the mountain a falling boulder will!
this is serious stuff. Cvonpete below is right. Annapurna is the most dangerous mountain. Ed Viesturs the guy who has summitted all 14 8000 M could only summit Annapurna during his third attempt !! He call this Mountain his nemesis
Just an idea about how dangerous Annapurna is. The death ratio of climbers on Everest is 7:1. On K2, which is considered tougher, the climber death ratio is 3:1. On Annapurna, it's 2:1. So for every successful summit, one climber dies. With a group of four, it was higly possible that half that expedition could die on that climb. Astounding! You need serious mountaineering experience for that mountain.
Althought I am not a Pole I could understand most of what was written ...they were on the western ridge of Annapurna, 100 m below the summit , he said he dropped through snow 2 times I think, that snow was not solid mass, he couldn't stand on the snow...and he said someting else I don't understand...the last sentence was : let's go down.
I had read a bit about the first Annapurna climb (French, 1950) and saw some photos but neither showed as well as this how steep and how difficult it really is to climb!
proper,proper,proper mountaineers!!
