Charles seemed okay with that comment, I think he wouldve walked out if he had a real problem with the comment, and whats with Richard Dawson being called a prick?
funkeekatt is right. The "obviously gay" 70s actors for the most part were perceived as being silly, not necessarily as gay. Of course people would make comments about them being gay, but that did not define any of those comedians the other guy listed.
drewdane: I hate to bust your bubble but you must have been the only one naive enough not to know these guys were gay back in the 60's. Please don't try to project your "naiveness" on the rest of society.
I remember the days when I wake up to watch the SYN Match Game every morning both weekdays and weekends. But GSN cut it back to weekdays ,and now it is no longer apart of GSN . I hope someone will come with ideas to bring back the show again

Wow. Was this actually on TV back then? Or were people back then not aware of "being in the closet"? Wow. I can't believe he said that! Hilarious though! Thumbs up!
Charles seemed upset. He wasn't out. Gene crossed the line, but I think he just made a bad joke and there was no taking it back. Gene and Charles were both cool, as was Brett. It's Richard Dawson who was sort of a prick.
I'm sorry for the abrupt ending, but the video software that I was using only let me copy 1 minute of video. I can tell you that Charles didn't really make any other comments towards Gene after that. They were cool with each other. Chuck knew that Gene was only funnin'.
I think Gene was genuinely annoyed at being teased for being frugal, so he took a cheap shot at Charles, and Charles was left shocked and speechless because although he was quite flamboyant, he didn't come out of the closet on his own. Neither did Paul Lynde, Rock Hudson, Liberace or Sal Mineo. Celebrities' careers in those days would be shattered if the celeb was openly gay.
Very interesting clip. Thanks for posting it. The dynamic between Gene and Charles was always a source of entertainment. The banter they all had was good natured comedy of the cruel; pure camp. Do you happen to know when this show was done?
@tuttlemsm I agree. I think Gene was just joking around and didn't realize he went too far in essentially outing Charles. But the show must move forward.
@funkeekatt Neither was Paul Lynde, but who didn't know? It was the worst kept secret in Hollywood.
I'm surprised that Gene wasn't a little craftier about the way he said it, though. He was always a little more clever than this. I don't think it would have seemed as out-of-line if Gene had said "At least I only keep my suits in the closet" and left it at that.
@drewdane40 Actually you're mistaken. Many gay comedians in the 1970s were in closet and the general public was a lot more naive than they are today. No one I knew then knew Lynde, Reilly or Rip Taylor were gay. We just thought they were acting silly because they were comedians. Keep in mind this was long before Ellen and Rosie and Will & Grace.
@funkeekatt at NO point in Match Game's run was Charles in the closet. Look it up....maybe everyone else you just mentioned but Charles was never NOT out when Match Game began airing...
@funkeekatt I don't know the air date for this ep but whether Charles was officially out or not we knew. The same for Paul Lynde. How could anyone not know Rip Taylor was gay.
@drewdane40 I disagree. The '70s was a more innocent time. Looking back on them now it's quite obvious to everyone how gay they were, but not back then. Remember that was long before Ellen and Will & Grace. All three men you mentioned were comedians so I think most people just perceived them as acting silly. Even as late as 2002 when Rosie O'Donnell came out half her audience was shocked.

Is it true that you can tell what a game show host is packin' by the size of his microphone?

Television is so overly edited now days. I love how uncensored this feels, and how they just let moments play out.

Gene got his revenge.
You know charles had been poking at him all this time and Gene's kept it in, this was only the shot across the bow.

I think the off-camera "oh-oh's, no-no's," and "now wait" were the most interesting, as was the audience reaction.

Not cool, Gene. Sometimes when you are teasing friends it can go too far. I think it did this time, right on national television.
