  • Anyone else impressed with the name Oussama -> Ousama -> 王様

  • god, it's just some matrix rotations...at MIT, this would actually work, but then we'd have to give it up to DARPA lol

  • yeah awesome just that Star Wars originally was not at all about sword fighting

  • Those look like dildos note lightsabers. lol

  • needs to be faster, but good job

  • its too slow

  • God, that looks like so much fun: to actually see what you've made in jedi form

  • Let us hope they don't move to the dark side;)

  • JediBot versus Nao GET READY FOR THE NEXT BATTLE

  • For one of the most prestigious universities in the world, doing this as a final project seems way too simplistic. This seems more like a weekend project that a group of friends would do.

But it would be an incredibly fun project to work on, and of course, it's great content to advertise the school and their program.

  • clearly none of the critics understand research

  • this is where people go to LEARN robotics, and to learn you make all sorts of things, not just the better egg-beater or vaccum cleaner so your lazy cunts can sit all day while a robot does things for you, ignorant fucks.

  • this is pathetic

  • @tadeusz7925 why?

  • @SheepSteve101 sorry this was an old comment, propably created when i was drunk, and btw im drunk now. well ok im always drunk, nevermind, still this bot could do much more,

  • So much comments concerning money, like - how much money they throw away just to make stupid robots... Well, morons...ask yourself - how much money is spent monthly to keep prisoners safe and sound? How much money is spent daily to help drug addicts to get better? These students are your future! And who's money it is, anyway??

  • 2 questions:

    1) this contributes useful knowledge to society how?

    2) this going to raise the sexual attractiveness quotient to the opposite sex how much more?...

answer to both? probably not much

  • Stanford University spends $ just to make a nonsense robot, what's the use of that? It can't barely hit me once. It's so slow.

  • @chamlyon The Robot may seem to be useless, but I think this will lead developers digging into the whole 3D-Robot-Human Interaction and many great projects are up and running. And this is just the beginning. Think of it's capability to drive cars, allow users to control their computer and there are many other things you will be able to do with that technique. Soon you'll have something like that in your smartphone, and you'll be able to check your mails this way :-P

  • Yeah! Great job, Jedi Ken Oslund!

  • 5 years later... They make the next upgrade... called General Grevious

  • Cool. Now speed it up about 20 times.

  • Jesus everyone, this was a class on how to use robotics, and these students did stuff like this as final projects. Why do 1/3 of the people on YouTube have to be overly-critical idiots?

  • @unclefeezus because it is easier to sit down in front of the computer and make critics about people who actually have life! :)

  • @unclefeezus Because they've only WATCHED Star Wars, and are haters. Although this is retarded... lezzbiahonest.

  • what a load of shit.

  • It's nice to see my son's tuition well spent into something useful that clearly is going to help him getting a job with such a training. Thank you Stanford!

  • That's how Grievous started. :)

  • Lame.

  • He looksl ike a Jedi

  • SKYNET!

  • Not seeing any innovation here. How did this make the news?

  • Kinect? Pretty neat use of that tech

  • Didn't we always have swinging robots?

  • Comment removed

  • too slow......................

  • これじゃない!

    もっとスピード早くできないものか・・・

    Kinectじゃないが確か日本にも特殊なカメラを使ってどんな球でも打ち返せるロボットがあったはず

  • lamest project...

  • haha be on your toes, man hes so quick!

  • standford university...making robots 1 step closer to killing us

  • @rawscopes LOLOLOLOLOLOL...I really hope not XD

  • ...be scared very scared! T-800 with Sabers...we are doomed!...

  • Theres a movie called "The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother" where he builds a sword fighting machine powered by a bicycle.

  • This has got to be a mockumentary.

  • Robot should be able to reverse the man's counter. The thing you are missing here is the TOTAL FUNDAMENTALS of Countering a strike from ANY starting position.. I can come to Stanford and spar with the JediRobot for some hours so you develop the JediRobot's skills a little bit more. Including fencing strategy, across center and high and low. Eskrima Guro Khalid H. Khan, Detailed Close Quarter Eskrima Fencing, EMAIL: eskrimaclass@yahoo.com , 310-254-4093. HW Engr.

  • @guroeskrima its just as pointless as your comment and the sad life you live.

  • It would be a lot better if we didnt dabble in ai.

  • DINA RIGBY IS FUCKIN' DEAD!!!

    amazon.com/Dish-Served-Tales-Revenge-ebook/dp/B004W82MCK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311707526&sr=8-1

  • It would be a lot better if it went faster

  • Let me bring my lightsabers and come spar with it... then see how fast you can make it attack! I want to see if there's a Grievous mode or not.

  • ...to beat peaceful demonstrants!

  • I jedi is way faster but if this was in the matrix it would be fine.

  • Comment removed

  • Bet a lot of lady nerds get good use out of jedi bot if you know what I mean.

  • Good against remotes is one thing. Good against the living, that's something else.

  • it would be cool if you could control how fast the thing could swing at you.

  • this is awesome- try to see beyond this application and imagine what else can be done here. Also- if you like light sabers see (fun with light sabers) by Cedar Grove H.S. students, it is out of this world...

  • Tonight on when geeks have too much time...

  • 0:53 "You have to be on your toes to block it" ......ROFL

  • "star wars is the only movie with robots and swords", this guy has never herd of a Gundam...

  • This guy definitely sounds like an expert sword fighter, if you know what I mean.

  • This is great and all, but dibs on punching the guy that taught the robot uprising how to use lightsabers first.

  • @mikelo303 Dude. What the fuck are you trying to say. Talk English.

  • Finally some good use for kinect!!

  • Nice prototype.

  • I wonder how long it will take to create a robot which can really beat a boxer on a ring.

  • don't leave any swords around it. you never know...

  • doesn't he have any people-friends to play sword fighting with? ...oh wait - dumb question. I suppose necessity is truly the mother of invention...1) Geek needs friend. 2) Geek creates robot to sword fight with. 3) Robot becomes sentient and slays geek 4) Robot spends the next 123 days browsing Geek's 2 terabyte porn stash 5) Robot gets bored and decides to go outside 6) Robot doesn't like what he sees and decide to destroy world....it's only a matter of time now -

  • @shusband456 should also say -- cool inventon though -- I like it!

  • Second grad student looks a little bit like Peter Krause.

  • The origins of General Grevious

  • Creating a robot programmed to attack humans. REALLY GREAT IDEA! THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE GOES TO YOU!

  • @JLamminator It's better going to them then that Jack hole in the White house...

  • We're all doomed in 5 years time when microsoft's plan for world domination is enacted utilising all the kinect technology to build robots that make us mere mortals look pathetic.

  • Cloak it with human skin colour than we can have our first feel for it as a cyborg.

  • This is triggering my obsession with robots.

  • Yea. :)

  • Soooo cool! :)

  • You all miss the point.. this is only the beginning and it really is a nice start..

  • @Milupa5 Yes, next year it will be 12% faster.

  • @Milupa5 The beginning happened years ago when they started using robots to replace humans in factories and elsewhere. They're faster, more precise, and way less stupid. I could, however, see this being ideal for practicing slow-mo high fives.

  • @Milupa5 agreed: first robot arm with lightsaber, then Cyberdyne, shortly after Skynet and Judgement Day! :)

  • So that's how it looks in slow motion, why can't we see it at full speed? Oh, wait a minute, that was full speed?

If a robot came at me with moves like that I'd stab and block while watching porn on my iphone.

  • The stanford intro is the shit.

  • This is why Kinect > Move

  • what have you done?!?! skynet is one day closer

  • a stab`would be sufficient

  • Great. you invented General Grievous, WITHOUT inventing Jedi to protect us from it!

  • Now all we need is robot that learns how to shoot and rest will be history!

  • "you have to be on your toes."......no.....no you don't. The robot is slow as hell

  • Press 4 !! This man looks like Sheldon Cooper XD

  • @nanocastmanutd A BLONDE Sheldon Cooper :-P

  • For everyone, who interested in the robot programming interface: The new Reflexxes Motion Libraries provide a simple and convenient API that allows the integration of sensors in the motion control loops, such that the ability of a "reflex" is given to the robot.

  • All you geeks complaining about the sword skills of the robot are missing the point!

    This is important research.

    Carry on.

  • This had better not be where our tax dollars are going.

  • @TehDawgzor Yeah, cause tax dollars pay for universities...

  • @HFRAJK I lol'd

  • Stop calling it a fucking sword!

  • @Cola777333

You're right... look at them battle with those colored-duct taped sticks! Go robot, go!

  • Not that impressive. Should be renamed PadawanBot.

  • Rise of the Machines anyone?

  • There're basically seven cuts in single-blade sword styles, and this thing's using like four. I'm not seeing any rising diagonal cuts from low to high, and only the occasional horizontal cut.

  • Is it me or does that resemble the Borat hotel scene with the dildos?

    Just me I guess...

  • You call that a robot, this is a robot: v=-KxjVlaLBmk

  • PROTIP: WEAR THE SAME COLOR OF THE GREEN LIGHTSABER TO BE UNBEATABLE AGAINST THE JEDIBOT.

  • Oh.. so this is what they mean when they talk about queers swordfighting. I was way off!

  • the end isn't near yet... they don't have a black guy... T2 reference so relax people...

  • shit. the war has begun.

  • that gonna be one awesome sex toy, nice work perverts

  • I bet that guy originally created a robot with a pole for other purposes

  • 1:52 Nothing like Hindiglish. Be sure to signalize the remote host.

Anything that manages to show a heroine with a sword for 3 seconds is academy award material. What language is it written in? It's hard to believe they keep picking strange new languages to control the same old servos.

  • please people, thats only programing, when will the real AI will be out.

  • God. What am I doing with my life!!

  • Make two and have them battle. It'll be slow but will will be an awesome technological feat, and a great advancement for our inevitable robotic overlords.

  • give them a few years and they will create captain grievous

  • This is unbelievably stupid. Seriously not impressed.

  • @Raxarax No one gives a shit.

  • Right, I'm a trained swordsman, I'd be willing to help test if it can fight at proper human speed.

  • I love the little awkward giggle at 0:54,

  • 0:26 "That's quite a bit of force."

I see what you did there...

  • *watches at comments about ti being to slow ....*

_realises non of the commenters is smart enough to understand the idea of this...*

  • Good job, this will be great for training in the sport as you increase the speed. This device has lots of applications of course.

  • on your toes and ready to block it.... HEHE

  • queers

  • cranck up the speed!

  • it's toooo slowwwwww

playing sword fight with a little kid it's way better and more fun

  • Sleepbot?

  • Am I the only one that thinks this guy looks like Wayne Gretzky?

  • @1297qwerty1297 A 'Jedi' that looks like Gretzky...Kevin Smith would wet himself at that notion.

  • A swing once every 2-3 seconds .... yeah... I better watch out... >_>

  • Dear God!!! Why are we arming the robots now?!?!?!?

  • Silly people. When you sword fight you don't try to hit your opponents sword...you try to hit your opponent.

Watch two nerd playing with fake light sabers as they swing for and constantly miss each other sword for a good example.

Watching most sword fighting in movies is painfull since 80% of the movies are for show.

  • @GeoFry3 Thank you..I get sick of that as well...

  • @GeoFry3 orly? well, why is it silly that they programmed it to attack the sword, when they wanted to do exactly that, as they did not want to hit the person, but just make it look cool?

  • @worldsfuckedup

I was just comenting on the fact that 95% of people do not have a clue how sword fighting works. As clever as the students were, they probably thought they set it up the right way. Still a cool project and handy too. When the robots revolt all you'll have to do is drop your sword and they won't know what to swing at.

  • @GeoFry3 you are right on that, i'll give you that ;-) and i'd really like to see their response to an attacker with green clothing, maybe then you'd have your result and they'd just hit him instead of the sword^^

  • Of course the Sith Bot will be better :D

  • give it a genetic algorithm and limit the strength and speed to human levels. Star Wars nerds (such as myself) will spend millions for a moving one.

  • Wow....this technology is fascinating. Great Job!

  • Let's speed it up by a factor of 10 guys. No amateur should be able to beat it...

  • can't wait to start university to do things like this

  • The arm is manufactured by Kuka, the motor controllers are from DLR (German aerospace center). I wrote my thesis about a plattform equipped with two of those - absolute bleeding edge technology. By its appearance, one would not suppose how highly developed they are, but once you feel impedance control on one of those arms ...

  • very cool. what programming language do they use? It's not Assembly or C

  • this is good.... they should do more fine-tuning with the programming, like not telling it that it has to recoil the saber each time, and to sense objects better, like different swords.

  • so now what? they gonna send these to other universities to beat other students ass?

  • This would be lot more fun if the robot were moving 4 times faster. Perhaps overclocking it? =3

  • @FlumenSanctiViti

give it a damn claymore sword or a katana and make two of the robots sword fight.

  • @FlumenSanctiViti nah man its fighting like the old star wars movies lol

  • .... Ice Pirates

    just saying

  • lol the professor's name is osama hahahahaah

  • @pqpwow is it you homer?

  • @Mitzrael19 it's me osama!

  • @pqpwow what is funny about that?

  • @scumbaguk it's hilarious come on! the project is really cool, and I just saw humor in his name.

  • Very interesting!

What language was the programming in?

And did you use any AI in the system?

  • @syberraith As far as i remember, there is a specific (as in: Proprietary) script-like language provided by Kuka for controlling the arm. Perhaps that's what you see in 1:53. The guys in a project i was involved in usually used C for controlling this arm.

  • @photoallergic Googling Stienecker and KUKA provides a language specification.

  • @avdmeers Aaaah, thanks!

  • Instead of the title of "Grad Student" they really should've wrote: Jedi
