This was Neil's attempt to try a Jerry Lee Lewis-type rocker -- and it sure worked! Unfortunately "I Go Ape" did not chart as high as it should have. After it peaked at only #49 in 1959, Neil never again tried something as rocking as this. Too bad -- because it is a terrific record. Sad to see that both the opening and closing of the tune are clipped off here.
He is indeed deserving, but he is only the 2nd most deserving guy named Neil who graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn who is not yet in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Some would say he could fly, some would say he could swim, others say he could sing like Neil Sedaka.

Neil won't get in because he was associated with the Monkees, which is complete crap, they BOTH deserve to be in RRHOF!!!!!!

I never heard this version by Neil before.
I remember W.W. Harris singing this song - many years ago. Very nice surprise. Although this choreography would turn out rather naive, nowadays.
