I had to wait until the USA network showed Sale of the Century on TV because the NBC affiliate on my cable system, WLBT-TV Ch. 3 in Jackson, MS, did not show this, and TV 3 was the only NBC station on my cable system (We used to have WTWV [now WTVA] Ch. 9-Tupelo, MS on our system until it was replaced by ESPN-Ch. 9 showed SOTC). Now, 25 years too late, WABG-TV in Greenwood/Greenville, MS is adding a NBC station to its station along with Delta Fox.
If I hosted Sale of the Century, I want to bring back the Fame Game, the 60 Second Speedround, and the Shopping Game, where it takes $750 to win everything onthe Stage, and yes, the Cash Jackpot as well.
I used to watch Sale of the Century when it was on NBC and USA. My favorite episodes of Sale of the Century contain the Shopping Format, where it took $750 to win Everything on the Stage, plus the Cash Jackpot. I'd love to see Sale of the Century on GSN, along with Scrabble.
@MrAaronLadner I would also LOVE to see Time Machine and Hot Streak on GSN, but personally, I would rather bring back the Reg Grundy Library to either TBS, USA, WGN or Antenna TV
Well...the Speed Round came along in March of 1984, and the Winner's Board was added seven months later. In the nighttime version (which started in January of 1985), they used the "Shopping" format until November 1985, which was when they switched to the Winner's Board.
Oh man, that Summer is gorgeous. This show was a reflection of real life--at certain times the contestants had to decide if they wanted to save or spend their money. (If you thought you were going to lose, you might as well spend your money. Otherwise you might be the winner if you save it)
What a very good episode so far. I can already tell by from the first minute that this is going to be better than reviewing the 2007 version of the show. The three players are all good so far and are business people themselves when it comes to instant bargains; Elaine wanted the VCR & only took it if she had the lead. The fame game topic was a bit surprising I found it; I thought it was Susan Stafford until Jim got to the last clue. A good episode I feel this is so far.
In my opinion, what lead to the downfall of this version of $ale of the Century was that bonus round. Did not mesh with the rest of the game if you know what I mean.
Jim Perry was a great host. This may sound weird but Jim Perry's "aura" seems a little different on this show than his "aura" on Card Sharks. I don't think being on a different game show has much to do with it either. I'm not sure what's different about him on this show. Other game show hosts seem to have the same "aura" through out different game shows in their career. Like Chuck Woolery or Alex Trebek. There's something slightly different about Jim Perry on this show. Either way, he's great.
The thing I love about these older game shows is the insane cost of the electronic stuff - $799 for a 13-inch TV and a VCR? That could get you five 13-inch TVs with VCRs nowadays.
Was Jim ever a fame game question?

I was a contestant on Sake of the Century one time. I did win a little bit of cash, about $450. It was fun to have been there.

Summer filled in for Susan in 1979, as well as trying out for a week after Susan left. Brojo has clips of Summer's 1979 eps.

Jim looks like Don Adams here and seems less hyper here that he did on "Card Sharks"
he reminds me of Maxwell Smart here, whereas on "Card Sharks" his persona was more on par with Guy Smiley.
