I live in Athens and the truth is that this city has many problems. Traffic, noise, air pollution, drivers' behaviour... But tell me one big city that doesn't have these problems.. The thing about Athens is that many of its people don't love it and so they don't care about Athens. They only think of it as a huge chaotic "hotel" which they are going to abandon when they retire.. So I think it would be a good step to start caring about our city and see how beautiful it can be..

Sincerly i like very much Greece because of the beautifull landscapes on the islands, from Olymp Riviera and because of the monuments from Acropolys.I was 2 times in Greece and last time i stayed 5 days in Athens. Big mistake. The traffic is a nightmare, but they have also many other pronlems. i stayed in a hotel in the city center and those streets near Omonia are full of beggars, gipsies, drogs, they stink a lot. In the shops they are afraid of fake money and of rubbers. It is a crazyness.
you should see how it is in bucharest, romania. they don't even dispatch an ambulance unless you have a priority 1 emergency due to traffic. lol once the girl there was telling my dad what to do and he was like miss, i pay taxes to get an ambulance not advise on the phone. priceless haha

This reminds me of Catania in Sicily. I was stationed near the area for a short time while I was in the US Navy. They have extremely heavy trafic problems around that city and virtually no traffic signs or signals (like traffic lights or stop signs). Traffic is bumper to bumper, mopeds weave in and out between cars, emergecny vehicles are ignored altogether.
i live in germany and during the summer im often in athens. i am half-greek myself - and i like this big, crazy monster of a city.
but i can understand everyone living in athens the whole year being stressed by that. thats why most people leave the city at least for the summer, its too hot etc. best thing u can do is go 2 the islands in summer!

@ellievals im from germany and i can say that the infrastructure of athens is very good.Athens has a many big modern shopping malls, cafes, clubs, a big 5 star stadion(76k) and a 3 star stadion. The highways also are good (not so good as in germany but ok). The most cleaniest beaches, very modern museum, the metro is much better than from hamburg and modern, and the centre of athens is also interesting and modern, but a little bit dirtier than from hamburg

Although (having spent quite some time in NYC and living in Athens for the moment) I'd say Athens Urban Area is way overcrowded than Manhattan.. To put it this way: the area of Kypseli alone (the size of The Village) could be about 800.000.. also keep in mind the many narrow streets of the place, making traffic look even worse :) .. Still, Athens isn't small. Statistics may report 3-5.000.000 but it should be over 6.

The roads in Athens are no different in size than most European capitals. You know what's different? Parked cars! Stupid people park left and right, so each road looses a couple of lanes.

yes greece has one of thesmallest population in europe and one of the smallest in the world.ithink in athens there are 3 million greeks many born in turkey hence mane greek surnames end in (oglu) or starting with(kara) and (hatzi)and about 1 million foreigners who in comparison to the foreigners living in developed countries they are badly exploited and misstreated in greece with many basic human rights such that to freedom of religion beeing denied.
Hate to tell you guys but this is normal ambulance vs traffic in a city, nothing special. I'm a EMT, I ride and drive ambulances in situations much like this. If traffic has nowhere to go, like this video displays, then traffic cannot move for an ambulance. It is acceptable! Props to the EMT's who had the sense to keep level headed in a rough response situation, props to Turkey's EMS crews. ;)

But it happens in Vancouver too....6 months ago a police car wasn't give a break at the intersection responding to an emergency so she finally just makes room herself and scrapes up other vehicles. Greece has the worst goverment services i have ever see. (health, education, social security, police, highways, etc.)
Only 3 things are great. (subway/metro of Athens, Athens airport, Attiki/highway, Rio bridge)
Only the nature beauty keep us staying in this country... and ofcourse the nightlife...
I would prefer Austria to live and Greece just for holidays...3-4 times a year

yes, i have been at the Vienna airport but i use taxi, so i have not see the connection with the underground.
As for the carribean islands, ofcourse are beatifull but i hate the humidity so i prefer the Greek islands...

This reminds me of Catania in Sicily. I was stationed near the area for a short time while I was in the US Navy. They have extremely heavy trafic problems around that city and virtually no traffic signs or signals (like traffic lights or stop signs). Traffic is bumper to bumper, mopeds weave in and out between cars, emergecny vehicles are ignored altogether.

i live in germany and during the summer im often in athens. i am half-greek myself - and i like this big, crazy monster of a city.
but i can understand everyone living in athens the whole year being stressed by that. thats why most people leave the city at least for the summer, its too hot etc. best thing u can do is go 2 the islands in summer!

Went there first time in 1988, hated all the way except for the islands and sea, Athens was horrible, so poor. Well in 2007 went back, just the same, isn't great??? OMG the people didn't change, the traffic is worse and civilized ancient people are lost in history, they are NOT civilized, not enough to be called Europeans, sorry for them, by the way they will have only poor tourists to face all "THAT", or good ones will never return, like me.

@ellievals im from germany and i can say that the infrastructure of athens is very good.Athens has a many big modern shopping malls, cafes, clubs, a big 5 star stadion(76k) and a 3 star stadion. The highways also are good (not so good as in germany but ok). The most cleaniest beaches, very modern museum, the metro is much better than from hamburg and modern, and the centre of athens is also interesting and modern, but a little bit dirtier than from hamburg

Although (having spent quite some time in NYC and living in Athens for the moment) I'd say Athens Urban Area is way overcrowded than Manhattan.. To put it this way: the area of Kypseli alone (the size of The Village) could be about 800.000.. also keep in mind the many narrow streets of the place, making traffic look even worse :) .. Still, Athens isn't small. Statistics may report 3-5.000.000 but it should be over 6.

yes greece has one of thesmallest population in europe and one of the smallest in the world.ithink in athens there are 3 million greeks many born in turkey hence mane greek surnames end in (oglu) or starting with(kara) and (hatzi)and about 1 million foreigners who in comparison to the foreigners living in developed countries they are badly exploited and misstreated in greece with many basic human rights such that to freedom of religion beeing denied.

Hate to tell you guys but this is normal ambulance vs traffic in a city, nothing special. I'm a EMT, I ride and drive ambulances in situations much like this. If traffic has nowhere to go, like this video displays, then traffic cannot move for an ambulance. It is acceptable! Props to the EMT's who had the sense to keep level headed in a rough response situation, props to Turkey's EMS crews. ;)

I'm half Greek and been to Thessaloniki where drivers are rude and dangerous....and same in Mexico. The nicer the people the more aggressive the driver. But it happens in Vancouver too....6 months ago a police car wasn't give a break at the intersection responding to an emergency so she finally just makes room herself and scrapes up other vehicles. Hey, it could be your family in trouble and whats wrong with trading a little paint.
