im isshinryu shodan level and i love your katas!!!!!.......only Isshinryu can recognize the true technique behind your kata.....im subscribing please get in touch with me any time.
@mrBleu86 A kata is not necessarily a performance. Bruce Lee found no use for kata's he rarely if ever practiced them, therefore he would be below "shodan level". Basically your statement means very little, please elaborate.
@SummerThieves ...the movements look awkward and exaggerated, almost like a poor copy of an actual kata.
His dojo etiguette is also not correct. (It is acceple to bow that low only if you are bowing to your yakuza boss.)
Basicly, when I say ´below shodan level´ I mean: someone who copies a kata poorly and trains Americanized version of karate in a mcdojo, and has a weak kihon.
I think his attitude towards training is good(strong kiai, strong punches) though.
@mrBleu86 It's not a bad Wansu, I've seen quite worse. I'm not sure what exactly what you mean by "Americanized" version. Master Shimabuku was very open to Americans and there style, or take on Isshinryu, in fact he encourage it. He was wise enough to realize no style is ever perfected. There is always room for growth, even if that growth is by mistake. Probably the best way to learn.
Wansu is my favorite form to watch. The footwork in this form reveals a lot about the karateka's groundedness.
This karateka in particular needs more Sanchin training. Too much floating and gliding (mostly due to the wide stances). See the feet from 0:40 to 0:45. Deep stances must be dropped into, not lunged for. Get those heels down!
Hi if you serch here in you tube for Sensei Miguel Santo Domingo you will find an exibition of Wansu kata with its bunkai if you could see it and tell me what you think it be asome. The exibition was done when he was a brown belt thanks guys any comments or question post it on the video ill read them there (watch it in hd)
Actually very, very close to the kata we practice here in Delaware. The only thing I saw that I didn't like was the block, knee, punch series. The knees were winding up early and not getting enough distance in the strike, making it ineffective. Stances were very wide, but I was originally a Shotokan practitioner, so I actually prefer the larger, deeper stances than is in traditional isshin-ryu.
Good form and good snap but he's not "seeing" the fight. Too robotic if you know what I mean. Also, every Issinryu gi I have ever seen is white, even for masters. It's the belt color that changes. Nidan Rich
His strikes are too high and need less to say his kata was strong and he obviously good at what he's doin but iam not too sure its traditional isshinryu
1/27/09 - oops, I should state that Alaska has no Isshinryu dojo, just the Shorin, Shotokan, Jinen, Renbukai, Goju, and Shito lineages.
Comment back anyone?? --- are all Isshinryu punches executed at the mid-level of the "opponent" ? (Akin to keeping one's kicks at waist level in some other Arts).
thanks for the comment-reply. I'm curious: you said that Shorin is similar to Isshin except without the vertical fist. The man pictured above is using the vertical fist in the kata. Did you imply another sensei not pictured above? thx.
I'm quite interested in Isshinryu. I've lately been perusing youtube[dot]com to find out more about it. Alaska hasn't ONE dojo. Bummer. I began in a Northern Shaolin Kung Fu based school - I notice that the vertical fist of Isshinryu is a nice complement to my prior foundation in NSKF. Just wish I could find a dojo. Books and DVDs are my only resource choice for Isshinryu.
Nice snap and impressive power. Now, just don't do it that hard very often if you want to still be able to use your arms and legs when you get older. I'm 35, have been involved off and on for 28 years and every joint hurts. I was raised around Harold Long, Phil little and half the masters that came from Knoxville, TN. and have since learned not to worry about feeding ego, worry about your body. That goes twice for you morons breaking boards. BTW, never look down during your bow.
My Bunkai is that you move into an opponent using a sweep block and catch their punch close to their body then grab the back of the head as you drive them into you fist then kick to solar plexus and finished.
Some people say its a fake reinforced uppercut but that is the begginner bunkai
Yeah, that was a good Wansu, best I've seen on Youtube.

Memories man, I used to do this style back in the day. Isn't this the shortest kata in isshinryu and seison is the longest?

Memories too - I trained with the Jennings Karate system, upstate NY, back in 86
by the way - great kata performance here.
