i couldn't care about her jumps but I love her beautiful spirals! She has strength in that visual components, though she definitely could improve in her jumps though in some areas she did better than others. Only time will tell if she needs to make noticeable improvements in her technical skills.
I love her layback spin! Gorgeous!!! The best I have ever seen! If only Yu Na Kim could do such a perfect layback - she could really learn something of her!
@ayame87et: No, I'm sure he means layback. The pearl spin and the layback spin are different. Also, as much as I love Yuna, her layback isn't the best in the world.
I'm not a skater, but I've watched a lot of Caroline's Youtubes. Even *my* untrained eyes can see that she just doesn't have the grace, the speed, or the jumps to compete with the big girls.
I cut her a lot of slack because she's still growing and shaping, but she has GOT to fix those jumps, and the choreography is mediocre at best. Needs a new coach + I wouldn't push her for 2010 Olympics.
Everyone has things they can work on, including Caroline. Anyways the "big girls" are at least 2 years older than her. Give her time to grow and then if she hasn't improved by then (which she will) make mean comments. I don't understand why people make mean comments when they can't do better.
cubanana12 is hilarious! Although I don't think Caroline bribes her way up there because she really doesn't need to stoop to that level, but maybe some of the other skating organizations (i'm not going to name names) might have done so.
Cubanana12, you just don't get it do you? You will never be as good as Caroline, and I can only think of a better reason only that you are jealous of all the attention's she's been receiving! Caroline Zhang is very popular, and unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about it. Just leave our favorite figure skater alone, okay, cubanana12?
You must be joking, blind or have a personal vendetta. It is plain silly to make such a statement 4th in the world behind Yu Na Kim and Mao Asada, at age 15 and former World Junior champion. If she has no talent, then she must be the hardest working 15 year old in the world to be so brilliant with "no talent". You make a mockery of your own judgment and character with such a statement. I may not like all the senior skaters, but I acknowledge that at this level, they ALL have talent.
She's a consistent skater than most of them. Her chance of winning is for her to beef-up her short program. Instead of the loop she should do a lutz. Everyone is doing a 3F/3T combo but the rest of them are doing the lutz. She needs to be more competitive since most of them cant seem to stop falling in the LP. If she can stay with them in the short program, all she needs to do in the free skate is not fall.
Remember, Caroline just went through her last drastic growth spurt(and possibly emotional awareness). All things considered, she was lucky it went through quite well for her. An unlucky example would be Mirai Nagasu. Her 09 Nationals SP program performance was so poor and embarassing that she entered the LP with trepidation.
Comes May 20, Caroline's 16th birthday, she should be in for a rude awakening from her coaches, choreographers and trainers. Boot camp! lol
In the matter of a week, her speed looks like it improved. She was amazing in the performance. Honestly, if shes getting marks this high with her speed issues, and jumping technique, I'd love to see what will happen once she corrects these things.
exactly! that's one of the best things about her. she has issues to address but they are all things that can be fixed with proper training. add speed and a bit of height to her jumps and she'll be right up there with the best of them. her consistency is wonderful and she's definitely got that "Kwan-like focus" in pressure situation. it's great to see that so many of Michelle's wonderful attributes have rubbed off on Caroline. if she can fix it over the summer she should be headed to Vancouver.
Her coach, Mingzhu Li, has always said that her two greatest natural assets are her flexibility and "mental toughness". Caroline might get a little tense in competition sometimes (unfortunately always at National's), but she always seems focused and "aware" -- she comes off the ice knowing exactly what she did or didn't do. Maybe she should let go of herself more; OTOH, she will not suffer from over-thinking when she grows older, as she does it so much already! ;)
She needs a new coach! She hasn't progressed for the last 2 years...doesn't anybody wonder why? Sorry, Chen Lu's coach, but you're not doing a good job. Caroline has all of the talent and mental toughness that anyone could want in a skater. She just needs a good coach who will bring her to the next level.
i really want her to fix the high kick cuz its forcing her off her axis and her jumps would be so amazing =) but anyway shes improved so much already rooting for her next year!
She's a perfectionist, she's striving to beat her PB, which was 62.60. She's not happy about that 3-3 (she would've beaten her PB if she had fully rotated the 3T).
I think part of it is she's trying to figure out a million things at once - were things downgraded? did she get all her levels? where is she in the standings? is it a new pb/sb? All of those things running through her head could lead to that unhappy face.
She did, but she missed her 3-3. She's never really happy which is good actually. There's always something you can improve upon. This was her best SP of the season so far. If she could just fully rotated that 3-3... :)
she is so much taller now, isn't she? maybe that's one of her reason of jump problems. i think she is very talented skater, have to overcome in somewhere!
i think she should take advantage of the fact that she won't be at worlds and start working on her jump technique ASAP. if she continues on like that, she will have a difficult time getting to where she wants in the senior circuit.
She just needs a bit more height in her jumps I think. Great spins and she's got good speed in her programs. She's got what it takes. just needs a bit more height.
The jumps are clearly her biggest problem, but the spins and spirals are fantastic. Best layback in the field. But I think this music is too powerful and dramatic for her. If only she could pick a lighter/softer music, because the potetial is there.. It is really frustrating not only for her but for every one else who see her potetial too...
she had the same reaction in the us natls when she heard her sp score... she needs a great coach to correct her techniques on her jumps, that way she would get credit for her jumps more.
canadian skater have never received under-rotation problem...i think this judging system is insane! i doubt there must have political reason towards olympic in canada...
I wouldn't even go that far. Her jumps are extremely solid...she's consistently hit everything in her LP 3 times in a row so far this season (TEB, Nats, 4CC). Her problem is her technique. Her lutz always receives a "!" and sometimes her flip does too. Her odd kick on her flip and lutz might be hard to correct, but more than anything, she needs more speed and deeper edges. Her coach needs to get with it or pass Caroline off to someone who can help her correct those probs before next season.
because Canadian ladies don't have triple-triple, they do easy 3-2. Most Canadian ladies are not very capable of completing any 3-3. I saw Joannie Rochette sometimes try 3-3 in the practice but almost always changed to 3-2 in the real competition.
Canada has nothing to do with it. Zhang is lovely, talented and cute but she has weak jumps- anyone can see that. She needs better training, not excuses from her fans. I love her but we have got to be realistic youknow?
What she needs is better technique on only her flip and lutz.
As for the height of her jumps, given how tiny she is and still yet to hit puberty, you cannot expect much more until her body develops. And better speed and power will come.
Unfortunately for Caroline, cheated jumps are scrutinized more now than just a few years ago. It'll come.
caroline skated more speed in this programm, 2A was much better , but i 3F3T was underrotated i think. good luck in the FS. i hope she will be the best among the us ladies. go caroline !!!!!!

Caroline should have won the bronze medal.
She was the victim at this event coz japanese sponsors always want a japanese skater to stand on the podium.
It should be Mao for japanese.
If you check out the detail results of ISU homepage Mao was protected by some sneaky judges.
Even though Mao fell and did not complete her triple jumps she got +1.
Is it possible???LOL
Imagine how Mao gets the points if she does not fall.
