It would've been great to have seen Martin and Lewis work together again after the split but the apparent truth is that Martin hated Lewis' guts for years thereafter and hinted at it one way or another whenever the topic came up, while Lewis stayed manfully mum throughout. They were both fantastically talented, obviously, together or separately. Lewis, like Chevy Chase, wound up knocked sideways by narcotics from all the pratfalls, both not long after the heights of their careers.
@Impowers History tell another story. One of the public rifts between Jer and Dean came when Jer was interviewed in 1957 and hinted Jeannie was the cause of the break-up. Protective Dean took offense & lashed back. Another time Dean was negotiating a TV appearance but Jer agreed to appear free. Jer shouldn't have tried to cut Dean out of money. Also Dean met with Jer at Paramount in early 60's and asked to get past all this. Jer just couldn't & Dean said it wasn't worth to keep trying.
It's just so wonderful that people are thoughtful enough to share all these great clips with those of us who appreciate comedy at its best ! THANK YOU !
I remember when I was little my mother and her sister used to talk about going 2 Atalntic City all the time-Dont know if they ever went! I was happy to find out Jerry was born somewhat close 2 me :) I can tell too by the way he talks!!!
I think the reunion that Frank did was nicely done. I really expected something to come of it though, maybe for them to try a little something. Jerry took it as a turf visit from an interview I had seen, and maybe that was Jerry's problem. It stems though into two greats who simply outgrew their partnership and went on to grow better apart.
The last clip -- Catskills premiere of the 1955 picture "You're Never Too Young" -- shows Jerry but no Dean. There was a spat between the two over where the premiere would be held. Martin went his separate way to Hawaii for a vacation while Lewis performed alone at Brown's Hotel. The team would split up the following year.
I just read about that in Jerrys book, It's so sad those two broke up, But I could see why, I mean they both needed to spread their wings a bit, but they still should have done Martin and Lewis performances. But I dunno, I just love them both together, 1 without the other is like having coffee with no cream and sugar.
Dean and Jerry were fun. Yet I heard Martin once said the two best things that happened to him in show business were meeting Jerry Lewis and leaving Jerry Lewis. M&L could have worked together some after the split, but their careers (Martin's particularly) benefited from going solo. Martin's fine comedic talents never got off the ground with Jerry. Lewis, the workhorse, made some of his best comedies after 1956 with more control over the films. I'm thankful for having them together and apart.
Martin and Lewis used to do that "balcony scene" in order to get the kids out of the theatre. The audiences wanted to stay in there all day, and watch each of M&L's shows.
my mom is in this video! she is peeking out behind a girl right after they throw the photos out of the window. she peeks out at the camara just as the commentator says:"unpresentated even for times square" she is looking directly at the camera from behind the girl looking up. how cool is that! I love martin and lewis...!!!

This shows how huge they were. They drew bigger crowds than The Beates!
