Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis...just read a couple of pages. We are just like God (created in His image) and we want true love. Not someone who loves us because of our $, fame, etc. God could send each of us a personal revelation. He could show us His Heavenly Kingdom so that we would all believe and fall in love with Him; but He wants true love. He wants us to choose Him out of faith that what He wrote is true. And the ones who chose to believe in Him will experience the wave of His hand...
God can even use ant atheist to bring what us "Christians" should be doing........and just because people call themselves Christians does not make them one. A person standing in a garage make them a Car? Neither does going to church make someone a christian. Just my opinion.

Those ceremonial proceedings which are supposed to be about the people being celebrated become soapboxes for attempts at conversion or reaffirmation in faith. Who do you think funerals are for? I promise you they are NOT for the dead guy. Funerals are for the living, grieving people left behind.
To someone who has faith in god, it's a perfectly reasonable time to provide a "reaffirmation in faith". Someones father/mother/brother/sister/friend died, and have probably lost some of the faith they consider important.
Come on atheists... we always talk about how we're more open minded than Christians... some of you aren't sounding like it.
I find it troubling how pop culture has so permiated many evangellical circles to the point of referencing this guy in a funeral. Who cares what some random joe says on youtube. I think everyone should shut down their computers and talk to a real person for a change. I say this to myself too.
Laways interesting to see what turn you all take in the comments from Penn's original "Says." To corral things back-- why is it not ok (or is it) to proselytize at a funeral- if it is a religious ceremony?
I think its wrong simply because its a time when people are mourning the loss of their loved one. Try to convert someone when they are in that emotional state shows alot about religion.
How can you so blatently take advantage of the fact that you know these people are hurting for the loss of their friend and then try to use that weakness to spread your message.
No. It shows a lot about this preacher (or this church).
Don't lump "religion" all in together. Using that logic is akin to saying "suicide bombers say a lot about religion" or "carjackings say a lot about the automobile."
With that said, I don't go for the whole preaching at a funeral thing. I'm Christian, been that way for a long time, but I still don't see the point of a "funeral service". Sing a song or two, chuck me into the ground or crematorium, and let people get on with their lives!
Ok you are right. It would have been better to say it says alot of how these certain people practice their religion. However every funeral I have been to that was held in a church was like that. The ones in a funeral home were slightly better but still heavy on the preacher warning of the pending doom in death if we werent saved. Then they would talk about how he was certain that the dead person was most certainly in heaven. That is still peddling that religion.
As a person of faith (Christian, Lutheran to be exact), I never thought that whole "hell fire and brimstone" thing at a funeral* was of much use. OK, so you're going to convert someone during extreme emotional duress. What happens when they realize said conversion was a result of that duress (or wonder if it was)?
*I don't think it's of much use at any time. That whole philosophy of preaching drove me away from Baptist roots. OK, so now I've gotten way off topic.
Lol true. It was the fact that they would talk about the resurrection on Matthews account and ignored the others. They would harp on how there were guards there yet the other gospels didnt mention any. All the changes from one gospel to the next got me thinking and challenging things. THey never answers my questions. They told me I just needed to have more faith.
I think its wrong simply because its a time when people are mourning the loss of their loved one. Try to convert someone when they are in that emotional state shows alot about religion.
How can you so blatently take advantage of the fact that you know these people are hurting for the loss of their friend and then try to use that weakness to spread your message.
I guess it depends on whether a funeral is about the decedant or if it's about the mourners.
If it's the decedant, then proselytizing can be OK. Presumably he's being buried/cremated in accordance with his beliefs. If those beliefs were sincere then he could want his friends and family to share them, to save their souls.
If it's about the mourners, it's not OK. It's a diverse society and it's rude during an emotional time to try to subvert someone's beliefs (be a salesman).
you sir are one God example to follow .. but you know everybody has his way , thank you for sharing that with us, you know we love you . Have a nice day :)
holy piss, that's just ridiculous. Maybe you should start doing magic at funerals? HA. or juggle something. thanks for the absurdity of the day, and the great channel.
Not sure I would be particularly happy if this came up at a family funeral, however - this does speak volumes about how powerful these segments are. Penn made some great points in his "A Gift of a Bible" video and here we are all this time later, and people are still talking.
Thing with born-again Christians is that if you show an interest (eg by listening to them, accepting a Bible or showing any positivity), they interpret that as a sign the Holy Spirit is working in you, or deep down you're searching, or you know it's true. You can't really win with them - if you *don't* show an interest, they'll think you're stubbornly resisting the truth because deep down you know it's true. Catch 22 really.
This goes more to the people commenting than it does to Penn, because I think a lot of you somewhat missed his point.
She specifically mentioned this happened in a church. If you don't understand, or even EXPECT that a preacher in a church might say things about god, or even proselytize, you're a moron. It isn't a question of (as someone said) "It is NOT EVER okay to proselytize someone unless they ask for it".
Prosetylizing during a funeral service -is- tacky and doesn´t show respect to the grieving. The funeral is supposed to be about the dead person and about his or her life and relatives left behind, it´s an emotional thing. Have you ever been to a botched funeral or a funeral where the priest suddenly goes off-track and starts rambling? It´s frikkin´ infuriating and can hurt for years.
Are you saying you´re ok with a priest that in the middle of a FUNERAL service, which is about the relatives, their grief, the dead person and his or her life, drops the thread and starts rambling about a blog just to make some half-ass point? Seriously?! Have you -ever- been to a botched funeral of a loved one? I can tell you, it hurts for years and it´s infuriating. Poor taste, poor choice, dumb priest with no sense of time and place.
Same thing with weddings. My cousin got married and I was the DJ, so I gave them a microphone. I guess the preacher thought it was just for him, that douchetard. So no one could hear the vows. I almost wanted to go and cut the mic but I didn't want to make a scene in front of my family (that lucky bastard).
I'm saying what I said. Nothing more, nothing less.
You're in his church. The family VOLUNTARILY chose that church to have the funeral service. You don't have to have a funeral at a church.
When you have that service IN A CHURCH, you ARE ASKING for him to act like a preacher in a church. That includes proselytizing.
You, or the family, has every right NOT to choose a religious service. When you make the choice of having a religious service, you can't be surprised when that's what you get.
You can´t say that they opted for a priest starting to try and prosetylize during their funeral. Or what, there´s a box you can check for that?
Besides, if he wanted to prosetylize he should have done it somewhere else. Doing it in a church to people who APPARENTLY ARE CHRISTIANS OR HAVE A FAITH IS LIKE PREACHING TO GEESE ABOUT THE VIRTUES OFSWIMMING IN WATER.
Your attitude says: Bite the bullet, take it, you don´t have a right to tell be offended when they´ve chosen a poor way to act.
Have you been to church lately? Preaching to the already converted is what they do. I've attended funerals in which the minister didn't really know the deceased that well, so he decided to just use an old sermon to fill up the time - that's probably what happened here.
No one forced them to hold the ceremony in a church. LOTS of funerals are held outside of religious institutions.
When you make the decision to hold a ceremony in a religious institution, you WILL wind up with... surprise... a RELIGIONS ceremony. Otherwise, why the hell hold the ceremony in a religious place?
It's like going to McDonalds, and complaining that the guy who took your order proselytized by asking if "you want fries with that".
So prosetylizing is suddenly part of a funeral? Where in the funeral services is that part mentioned?
And what´s that half-assed comparison to McDonalds got to do with someone choosing an emotionally critical time to try to blab about irrelevant subjects? Because -that- is what the priest was doing, if you listen to what Penn says in the video. The priest surely wanted to make a good point, but he certainly couldn´t have been less tactic or smart about it.
If. You. Want. A. Secular. Funeral. Don't. Have. The. Funeral. In. A. Church.
Common sense 101.
What you're saying is just as bad as when religious people get mad at atheists for ruining prayer in school. School is a government funded program, which means it MUST be secular, so there CAN'T be mandated prayer. That's just how it is.
A church is a "house of god", presided over by a "man of god".
What would you EXPECT? Why would you hold the service in the church?
Where I live the priest sticks to the subject and don´t start blabbing about how some guy gave another guy a bible, and how we all could learn from that, yadda-yadda.
I -would- expect the priest to ask god to take care of the deceased person´s alleged soul, I would expect psalms, prayers and some talk about how they´re all supposed to meet again in faeri..Oops, I mean heaven. I would -not- expect to hear "why we´re better than atheists"-speech.
Yes, but I failed to mention that this was in a reception hall and not a church.
But getting a preacher to perform the ceremony is pretty much just asking for it too. It's like that old story of the scorpion, the turtle, and the river. Except in this case the scorpion is mildly schizophrenic.
I was incredibly pissed off when that happened at my Dad's funeral. To have what should have been a few moments to reflect on his life, to say goodbye, and to embrace being alive turned into an infomercial for Christian recruitment. I wanted to walk out right there. And I am Christian. Had my Dad been a preacher or something then maybe it would have been relevant, but I found it offensive, disrespectful, and shallow.
I know - there's so many other guys around named 'Penn' - my cousin Pennifer, my uncle Pennford...haha.
The truth is Penn, Christians these days are so used to being slammed in the media and pop culture, that when a celebrity and atheist comes along and shows respect for them - it's greatly appreciated. Yours was a truly Christ-like attitude when you spoke with that Bible gifter - and that's why Christians have responded in kind.
Penn J, that is hilarious! You really opened up pandora's box when talking about the bible as a gift . Good for you though, I wish we had more atheiests standing up so maybe "atheiest" wouldn't be a bad word
If i were to pray... i think i would pray for penn. I'd pray for him to stay exactly the fuck who he is already, Except maybe that he could be a little more loud and out there in people's faces.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Penn , there is a God , how can life itself bestow so many great things on one person ,riches , humor , talent , intellect , all by accident evolution? NO WAY . the key to understanding there is a god is to appreciate profoundly the classic phrase ,you don't know what you've got until it's gone, then you'll know . It's very easy for blessed people to think they are responsible only for their great lives .
Quakey. Evolution isn't accidental. Mutations are random. But natural selection is not. There is nothing random about an animal with better vision/ superior camoflage etc. etc. having more chance of surviving and thus reproducing.
I'm trying to express that I think our human life is more than the sum total of all the evolution and natural selection you can account for .The human body and life experience it gives us is a miracle in my opinion No I admit I can't make a persuasive argument to someone who's mind is not open to the idea. I believe in natural selection no argument from me there, and I'm not ignorant, ,but if it helps you feel better , Perhaps I should not have commented sorry if you found it offensive
Being open minded doesn't mean believing something without evidence (Like your unprovable man in the sky) it means being able to accept and correctly interpret new evidence.
As for me finding it offensive... What makes you think I was offended?
Ramen fuels and sustains it's followers both spiritually and physically.
But you may yet be saved my friend. All one has to do is ingest the flesh of my Ramen god to be forgiven and swim in seas of hot Ramen in the afterlife for all eternity. If you fail to do so you will suffer being showered with the cold brothy noodle remnants the chosen discard for ever and ever and ever! Repent! Eat Ramen before it's too late!
Together we will summon a Ramen Tsunami to force all to eat of it before they die! Our success will be ensured in the Ramen apaocalypse. We must start boiling water to prepare for the great noodle block to submerge into the sea!
I would prefer to not be called Moonman but having read you entertaining reply ,I will reconsider Ramen as part of my daily regiment ,I heed you warning
That reminds me of an episode of The Simpsons where Principle Skinner wants to keep Lisa's identity anonymous. He says something like "Let's call her Lisa S. No, that's too obvious, let's say L. Simpson."
Christians constantly misquote Einstein as saying that he believed in God. They do this and then say "look he's a believer, and a genius, doesn't that mean something?"
But when you show them that Eistein refuted this and was misquoted, and that he actually was an atheist.... Well that doesn't mean anything.
If they converted Penn then it would be a win for their beliefs, But if Penn is an atheist... Well he's incorrect and it doesn't mean anything.
nope, Einstein was NOT an atheist, nor a theist. If you REALLY look at what Einstein said, though the label really did'nt yet exist, or at least was'nt all that known, he was clearly a PanDeist or PanenDeist{a type of deism}.
I hate how both theists{christians especially} and atheists misquote and misuse Einstein to back up their label/view. It's cherry picking and misintrpreting.
Einstein denied a "personal"{theistic} god, he never denied a gods existence alltogether.
By your very comment you prove that Einstein was an atheist.I'm not sure what you understand by atheism, but it's very definition it's that it rejects the theist crap, the dogma.Einstein criticized theism alot and denined the god described by the religion which makes him an Atheist!
Now that he accepted, along with a numerous other theories, the possibility of a creator that's another story.
I'm not an atheist. I don't think I can call myself a pantheist. The problem involved is too vast for our limited minds. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn't know what it is.
That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God. We see the universe marvelously arranged and obeying certain laws but only dimly understand these laws
Einstein was NOT an atheist{in fact I believe he actually blatantly stated so once; he also blatantly denied beeing pantheist or theist. He had a bit of an agnostic mindset, but it is clear that he leaned heavily towards the idea that there was some form of intelligent ordering principle... he just did'nt know what term to use, pandeism/panendeism is the term used for this today and fits such views perfectly}.
i think the problem is, with einstein he really didn't give about crap about religion, so he has a lot of quotes that seem very vague, and go in all directions.
I would have said simply "who the fuck do you think you are proselytizing me at all let alone someone's fucking funeral you piece of shit"? It is NOT EVER okay to proselytize someone unless they ask for it. I'm only here to show respect and that respect is NOT for you.
Okay, out of respect for the dead and the relatives I may have had a few words for the pastor in private after the service.
It's cultural! If he grew up in and lived in the mid-east he'd probably say Allahdamit. Or if he lived in ancient greece he'd probably say Zeusdammit or somethin.
I understand that part, however if you don't believe in something invoking it's name has no power. so to me it would like me starting the post with ZOLETAN FROM PLANET XEMARR!..and for the 6 people that gave me a poor comment. your fucking idiots, it was a question you close minded asses.
Wow dude, that really sucks. It's a bit dishonest that it was used almost as propaganda to those mourning to be evangelical, rather than what it was, just a shoutout to a random guy. Hope it didn't bum you out too much.
Wow. Youtube is putting video advertisements before in their video now? I stopped surfing BogTV because of this sort of thing. I hope it's not something that happens a lot.

OK, so now I've gotten way off topic.
tybo09 2 years ago
Lol so you took that whole thing to say that you agreed with me lol.
Yea I was raised southern Baptist and that drove me to atheism.
bighaus54 2 years ago
Not to sound like a prick to my Brothers in Christ, but some Baptists are almost enough to drive ANYONE to atheism.
tybo09 2 years ago
Lol true. It was the fact that they would talk about the resurrection on Matthews account and ignored the others. They would harp on how there were guards there yet the other gospels didnt mention any. All the changes from one gospel to the next got me thinking and challenging things. THey never answers my questions. They told me I just needed to have more faith.
bighaus54 2 years ago
At least they didn't play that George Michael song in response to your question...
They didn't, did they?
tybo09 2 years ago

bighaus54 2 years ago
I think its wrong simply because its a time when people are mourning the loss of their loved one. Try to convert someone when they are in that emotional state shows alot about religion.
How can you so blatently take advantage of the fact that you know these people are hurting for the loss of their friend and then try to use that weakness to spread your message.
bighaus54 2 years ago
I guess it depends on whether a funeral is about the decedant or if it's about the mourners.
If it's the decedant, then proselytizing can be OK. Presumably he's being buried/cremated in accordance with his beliefs. If those beliefs were sincere then he could want his friends and family to share them, to save their souls.
If it's about the mourners, it's not OK. It's a diverse society and it's rude during an emotional time to try to subvert someone's beliefs (be a salesman).

You're in HIS church. You *ARE* asking for it.

Jentzi1 2 years ago 4
Are you saying you´re ok with a priest that in the middle of a FUNERAL service, which is about the relatives, their grief, the dead person and his or her life, drops the thread and starts rambling about a blog just to make some half-ass point? Seriously?! Have you -ever- been to a botched funeral of a loved one? I can tell you, it hurts for years and it´s infuriating. Poor taste, poor choice, dumb priest with no sense of time and place.
Jentzi1 2 years ago 3
Same thing with weddings. My cousin got married and I was the DJ, so I gave them a microphone. I guess the preacher thought it was just for him, that douchetard. So no one could hear the vows. I almost wanted to go and cut the mic but I didn't want to make a scene in front of my family (that lucky bastard).
ScaryGuy255 2 years ago
I'm saying what I said. Nothing more, nothing less.
You're in his church. The family VOLUNTARILY chose that church to have the funeral service. You don't have to have a funeral at a church.
When you have that service IN A CHURCH, you ARE ASKING for him to act like a preacher in a church. That includes proselytizing.
You, or the family, has every right NOT to choose a religious service. When you make the choice of having a religious service, you can't be surprised when that's what you get.
hossrex 2 years ago
Jentzi1 2 years ago
Have you been to church lately? Preaching to the already converted is what they do. I've attended funerals in which the minister didn't really know the deceased that well, so he decided to just use an old sermon to fill up the time - that's probably what happened here.
yoda87960 2 years ago
The ceremony took place in a church.
It's like going to McDonalds, and complaining that the guy who took your order proselytized by asking if "you want fries with that".
hossrex 2 years ago
So prosetylizing is suddenly part of a funeral? Where in the funeral services is that part mentioned?
And what´s that half-assed comparison to McDonalds got to do with someone choosing an emotionally critical time to try to blab about irrelevant subjects? Because -that- is what the priest was doing, if you listen to what Penn says in the video. The priest surely wanted to make a good point, but he certainly couldn´t have been less tactic or smart about it.
Jentzi1 2 years ago
If. You. Want. A. Secular. Funeral. Don't. Have. The. Funeral. In. A.
Common sense.
hossrex 2 years ago 3
Service and funeral are 2 different things.
Jentzi1 2 years ago
@Jentzi1
The "why we´re better than atheists" speech is actually really common, In my experience around 50%. Churches assume too much.
ZakAdelman 2 years ago
Yes, but I failed to mention that this was in a reception hall and not a church.
But getting a preacher to perform the ceremony is pretty much just asking for it too. It's like that old story of the scorpion, the turtle, and the river. Except in this case the scorpion is mildly schizophrenic.
ScaryGuy255 2 years ago
ABSOLUTELY unacceptable in the reception hall. For more reasons than I could list in 500 characters, it's wrong in the reception hall.
No argument.
I also love your scorpion analogy. So true. You might think it's inappropriate, and assume the scorpion wont sting... but it's still in his nature.
If I arranged a funeral, and someone started proselytizing, I'd be terribly upset, and wonder what the preacher was doing in a strip club.
hossrex 2 years ago
I was incredibly pissed off when that happened at my Dad's funeral. To have what should have been a few moments to reflect on his life, to say goodbye, and to embrace being alive turned into an infomercial for Christian recruitment. I wanted to walk out right there. And I am Christian. Had my Dad been a preacher or something then maybe it would have been relevant, but I found it offensive, disrespectful, and shallow.

Penn , there is a God , how can life itself bestow so many great things on one person ,riches , humor , talent , intellect , all by accident evolution? Christians constantly misquote Einstein as saying that he believed in God. They do this and then say "look he's a believer, and a genius, doesn't that mean something?"
But when you show them that Eistein refuted this and was misquoted, and that he actually was an atheist.... Well that doesn't mean anything.
If they converted Penn then it would be a win for their beliefs, But if Penn is an atheist... Well he's incorrect and it doesn't mean anything.
yuothineyesasian 2 years ago

Penn might go crazy like all the other loonies, but it wont be from the praying.
puaseKlovn 2 years ago 2
I didn't think they would, I was just trying to give a peek into the religious psyche.
yuothineyesasian 2 years ago
nope, Einstein was NOT an atheist, nor a theist.
Iconoclastithon 2 years ago
By your very comment you prove that Einstein was an atheist.I'm not sure what you understand by atheism, but it's very definition it's that it rejects the theist crap, the dogma.Einstein criticized theism alot and denined the god described by the religion which makes him an Atheist!
Now that he accepted, along with a numerous other theories, the possibility of a creator that's another story.
Mrstabbor 2 years ago
I'm not an atheist. I don't think I can call myself a pantheist. The problem involved is too vast for our limited minds. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn't know what it is.
gwagblade 2 years ago
That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God. We see the universe marvelously arranged and obeying certain laws but only dimly understand these laws
gwagblade 2 years ago
those two comments above were from Albert Einstein's own mouth. It came from his interview with Time Magazine about a God.
gwagblade 2 years ago
No Mrstabbor;
Deism is NOT Atheism, nor theism.
Iconoclastithon 2 years ago
i think the problem is, with einstein he really didn't give about crap about religion, so he has a lot of quotes that seem very vague, and go in all directions.
