That was utter bull even someone who is'nt a breeder could tell if there cockatiel is male or female just by watching how they act. My male cockatiel used to do his courting rituals on me all the time bless him. Males sing a whole lost where as females don't this knowlage alone is really all you need to know if there male or female.
PS: to get DNA test only serves ONE purpose - to put more money in the pockets of the pettraders pockets. It's unnecessesairy if you educate yourself and know what you should look for. I have owned and bread cockatiels for 22 years, so I KNOW what I am talking about and I have NEVER EVER had my cockatiels DNA tested - there is absolutely NO reason to do that, NONE :D
Also while mating, the female will allow the male on top on her, put her tail at an angle so the male bird can rub himself against her...and eventually a female bird will lay EGGS :)
You can see if a lutino is a female by shining a bright light on it's tail. That will expose any horisontal lines, indicating a female - but you should know that if you buy babies, their feathers look female in both sexes! Buy only birds at least 6 months old to be 100 % sure and forget the DNA bull**** :D
DNA test my a** LMAO, it's really EASY to tell what gender a cockatiel is. Look at their tails!!! The grey male cockatiel will turn completely grey and the females will keep the horisontal, yellow stripes. The male cockatiel can lay his top completely flat on his head, the female can't! Also the male will eventually try to sing and imitale sounds, this the female bird can't do. She might try to make some rudimentary attempts, but she simply isn't equipped for singing.
@vibria7000 oh in that case for the singing part mines defenatly a boy!! he sings so LOUD sometimes. it sounds like a fire alarm :( i end up clapping my hands then he stops and just stares at me lol. im quiet worried i want to take him to a vet since they don't show if there ill or anything. and the previous owner didn't really lt him out the cage i don't think. i let my cockatiel out for the whole day apart from when i go downstairs for his own safety not to get injured which he don't like lol.
