I would have one full monitor dedicated to the GUI.

Although, if you're so into this dual monitor thing, why not a 30" Dell IPS panel for color and scaling accuracy and then an el-cheapo LCD, or even CRT for the GUI controls? That would probably be the best compromise between the two, seeing as most people could find a spare monitor cheap enough.

An IPS panel is capable of displaying the 117% of the NTSC color gamut, and over 100% of the Adobe RGB color gamut. It is the only option for absolute color accuracy, no matter what you're doing.

adobepc's setup sounds more like what we use at work.
our FCP has two 23" screens and above them in the center, there is a single broadcast NTSC flat panel monitor to view the output.
The avid setups (3 of them) have two 20" 1600x1200 4:3 monitors for work, a third broadcast screen above and a fourth 20" screen which has a signal analyzer. I dont know what its showing but its basically a circle with some stuff going in onside it :) Whatever it is, its from a company called Harris..
Harris makes all kinds of broadcasting equipment. My guess is that it is a vector scope showing the SC phase.
What Avid sytems are you using. we used an old Avid Media Composer based on the old Targa 2000 with a Pinnacle Geni Board for the RT effects. It was state of the art back in 1998.
You know, that rings a bell - the vector scope thing. The unit itself looks like a 1U height rack mount device.
As for the avid system, I'll get the exact specs for ya. One of the systems is a dual CPU HP XW8200, then we have two XW8600 (one four core and one 8 core). I'll have to find out what card is in them. I know the work gets saved on something called an Avid Unity fiber storage.

Harris makes all kinds of broadcasting equipment. My guess is that it is a vector scope showing the SC phase.
What Avid sytems are you using. we used an old Avid Media Composer based on the old Targa 2000 with a Pinnacle Geni Board for the RT effects. It was state of the art back in 1998.

You know, that rings a bell - the vector scope thing. The unit itself looks like a 1U height rack mount device.
As for the avid system, I'll get the exact specs for ya. One of the systems is a dual CPU HP XW8200, then we have two XW8600 (one four core and one 8 core). I'll have to find out what card is in them. I know the work gets saved on something called an Avid Unity fiber storage.

Using rackmount equipment shows that you are using professional broadast equipment as opposed to home audio and video equipment.
I should state that I do not do video production any more. I am trying to get into printing production and graphic design.

good points. Everyone has other preference but try to bring this in this macheads. I personally chose a 1680x1050120hz over a 1920x1200 60hz. Its better for gaming i can set vsync and still get 120 frames.

I thought some younger people might not realize that a 21" Dell will work OK. I admit for some things a 30" Apple Cinema display would be nice.

I use a track ball. Once you use a track ball you will never go back to a mouse. Trust me on this one folks. Another personal PM about that same thing. I also have a mouse pen.
