hi wademedic, watch and learn from orrin star. i learned fingerpicking too on the guitar and i am not a good flatpicker. pickcontrol can be learned by practice and starting slow. on the other hand I cannot use fingerpicks on a banjo, just the thumb-pick. forget clawhammer, like earl my fingers wont wiggle. enjoy the whole schmear
Try moving the pick with just your thumb and index finger only, without moving your hand or forearm. It's great practice even if you ultimately use some larger movement to play with.
Can any guitar flatpickers out there give me some tips? I'm a banjo player, but also pick a little on the guitar. I have alot of trouble controlling my pick when I play... Hitting multiple strings at once, missing strings entirely, etc. I guess it's cause I used fingerpicks first and learned on them. Can anyone give me some pointers?
Right now I'm learning mandolin....however Robert Bowling's guitar just begs me to pick up my flattop and play......Thing is I've played guit for 50 years and the mandolin is like childhood. Whatever these people are so talented. Love you band....
@conmaesta I am in the EXACT SAME SPOT! Here I sit, mando on my shoulder. I came here looking to pick the mando, and was also tempted to grab my gitbox and cross pick me some drop D!
@fretboardmusic It is interesting how many songs get mis-attributed. I research folklore as part of my day-job and it amazes me how many songs, old and new are mis-attributed, even in books published by good publishers. It seems if the song is good it is usually attributed to being Irish and if it sucks it must be of English origin hee hee ('m English, got a chip on my shoulder there). Cheers and thanks for posting this great rendition of WBB.
Davis, Bowlin and Maring are fantastic.......Rehearsed or not the mandolin and guitar are right on. Brad Davis is a smart mandolinist as is Bowlin on guitar. Nice riffs, nice timing on the riffs etc. So much nuance. Maring has a nice simple bass run down, rich and deep.
Trying to learn this tune on guitar for my fiddle playing friend...and I don't know if this guy is Robert or Brad (got a feeling the lady is Wil) on the guitar, but he's the guy I want to learn it from. Good stuff, Fret, and Thanks.
what makes a good musician is the relationship he or she has with the instrument that is played i like it when a song is played with different runs and technics and this song was mastered well
Robert, you are a brilliant musician. Guitar, fiddle, piano, etc..etc...you never cease to amaze me. And best of all you are an incredible human being.
Excellent picking on this traditional fiddle tune. The only thing it lacks is a banjo. Some good melodic banjo picking would have really filled out the sound here.
whauw. mr bowlin blew me away. and his pardners also. Thought only norman b could get that much out of the tune, but live and learn. and it looks so easy. Never heard of Robert Bowlin till yesterday, but he is truly a master of the instrument, and a heck of a fiddler to boot.
OUI c'est top super!! vous devriez voir et entendre Lo Gondet, oui, j'ai la chance de joouer avec, si! Le guitariste possède la main droite de Mr Blake jeune et l'ensemble est irresistiblement professionnel..merci à, tous, P
I have played guitar and banjo for years. I have played this piece hundreds of times with fine musicians. You play it so well that after a year of resisting it, you made me create a log in just so I could tell you what you must hear all the time. I love how you perfectly accent each others solos, while not getting in the way. Your bass player is a treasure. I have found truly good bass players are harder to find than almost anything else. My bad!
It is generally attributed to mid-twentieth century Canadian fiddler Andy de Jarlis.
Thanks.
