twewy is one of my most favourite rpgs of all time and if i had to make my three biggest complaints then they would be that it a) doesn't involve the player with the story as much as better games, b) that you can't go where you want in the game half the time because of all the wall barriers and c) it's too short

though i suppose that the last one can be explained due it being a jrpg, it has tons of different items for the player to use

Definitely won't be sending yahtzee a copy of sakura wars then.... Personally though I kinda don't mind when an rpg is story heavy rather than action heavy. Usually when a lot of attention has been put to the action rather than the story the whole thing is worse off for it. Everything is carried by the story in a story I can't imagine anyone can really enjoy a game if the storytelling was average and the gameplay was also average although that's exactly what yathzee wants. true balance.

It's the fact that it's a Square Enix game that makes every one of their jrpgs a LOT more story driven than when they were still separate companies (Squaresoft and Enix). I like my jrpgs, but I can't stand most of what Square Enix throws at people nowadays. Squaresoft had more gameplay while Square Enix has more story. Take your pick.

I played a visual novel once and thoroughly enjoyed it. I haven't bothered trying another though because the first one I played (Fate: Stay Night, which is far better than the shitty anime adaption) was over 50 fucking hours long.

I hated this game.

It's different from other JRPGs in the same way that getting reamed in the face with a jackhammer while falling off a mountain and landing in a sea of Yasuhiro Fukushima's splooge is different from having plain old sex.

What JRPGs (used to) do better than WRPGs was characterization. Getting to watch your characters grow is your reward for trudging through tedious "fights" where your characters dance their enemies to death. That's the draw of the more passive storytelling.

I think I must have finished this game 20 or so times. The free play at the end is amazing especially because you can choose which sidekick hangs around with you, which basically means I was allowed to level up Joshua to full and never glanced at the top screen in combat because he generally obliterated everything up there in the first few seconds. I got emmersed in the story and I loved it but the flaws are all pretty true. Great review man :D

@jandkas What? It's true. The combat was good, but as he said, it's not interactive storytelling and there's FAR too much dialogue. Like, Christ, there's WAY too much. The dialogue scenes drag on for SO long and you can't save while they're there so if you have to leave immediately then your grip on the story is royally fucked.

People say like five sentences at most and you actually reply which takes the dialogue in another direction but in TWEWY you're always reading a fucking novel only to wheel the character to the next novel. Then some combat now and again...then another novel.

JRPGs to the West are what FPS is to the East.

They get low review scores and only select people in enjoy them.

For example, I'm Japanese and love JRPGs, but I generally hate shooters. A lot of my friends in Japan agree. I move to Ireland, shooters are the biggest selling genre of games ever.

Not to mention, in Japan there's mostly girls in the gaming world, and in Ireland it's mainly boys.

Everything he said was true, except for the battle system. You don't actually have to look at the top screen when you fight. Just mash left and right on the d-pad while maintaining your focus on controlling Neku, and you pretty much rape everything on-screen, even at level 1 on Ultimate difficulty.

While I do agree that some of the characters are pretty much cut-outs(Shiki and Neku at the start, although he does develop quite a bit) there are many other characters that were exceptionally well done, Sho, Joshua and Kitaniji in particular.

Yahtzee needs to play Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, not Persona, especially 4. But Nocturne. It has all the cynicism he could choke down. It has random, turn-based battles, but it is very challenging and fun in a fucked up way. The game was practically made for nihilists, it's awesome. For what it's worth, a lot of gamers who like Mother also like the core Shin Megami Tensei games.

@KeeperOTDH2 There's nothing wrong with the gameplay, but the story and characters have a very moral attitude about them whereas all the characters in most of the other SMTs don't give a fuck. In Nocturne, you can restore the world to its original shape or create a world without humans amongst other possibilities. In Persona 4 you are good, you're saving the world(oppose to destroying it/recreating it) and the killer is bad and Izanami is also bad and that's that. No room for interpretation.

@KeeperOTDH2 Also note that I'm not saying Persona is bad(avoiding argument), I like all 5 of the games and look forward to P5. Just wish they would keep it dark since the lighter/mellow JRPGS like Final Fantasy and Persona 4 outnumber the darker/philosophical JRPGs like Xenogears and Nocturne 15 to 1. I have tastes similar to Yahtzee so I can relate to the negative outlook on anti-heroes turning good just for the sake of having a happy/moral ending.

Yup, i'm the type of uy who likes JRPGs, and i thought this game was great. no wonder it got IGN best ds game of the year. I prefer to be on a one-way track for as far as storylines go, and i didn't mind the dialogue, never saw it as a bad thing. but yeah, if you're not into these types of games, then stick to fps(i like borderlands ^^). btw, epic guitar hero skillz :O
