from a non-muslim perspective, this kind of debate confuses a lot of non-muslims, especially westerners. all over a beard. the way I see it is that he is doing his job and it seems to be a good job. what is more important? to read quran and trying to get a better understanding of the religion or to grow some facial hair? is it so important to decide if every single little aspect is haram or not, or to try to put one's spirit towards the spirit and allah? just my opinion.
