The film story is a LOVE TRIANGLE. Raj loudly proclaims love for Radha. She however loves Gopal who also loves her but keeps it quiet. Raj joins the air force and is presumed dead in action. Gopal and Radha fall in love, but Raj returns alive,marrries Radha,Gopal commits suicide.
I saw this movie as a child in India and thought- okay. I am now 48, a doctor in London and this movie now blows me away. The pathos of this love triangle, still with respect between all three protagonists, has to be seen to be believed.
As to the person playing the piano (in the recording), one was a musician called Roberts and the other was Shankar himself (from the composer duo Shankar-Jaikishan).
My dad who is a native Persian speaker & doen't know a word of Hindi can sing this song by heart. Apparantly this movie was HUGE when he was growing up. I like the song too & can understand a lot of verses.

Naturally, the indian songs by the Greatest Male Singer, Moh'd Rafi, along with the Greatest Female Singer, Lata Mangeshkar, with near equals such as Mukesh and Asha Bosle bring that special uniqueness to the movies and they live on in our hearts long after we've forgotten the movies themselves.
I agree and I don't mean to compare Moh'd Rafi with Mukesh negatively at all. They were both great but wouldn't you agree that Rafi may have been one rung above all other male vocalists during his time?
I think both are great. But different. Comparing is quite bad. Personally i like sad songs of Mukesh and romantic songs of rafi. Kishore is another legend.

Of course, no one can touch the incomparable Raj Kapoor whose seminal work was not "Sangam" as most believe but instead, "Mera Nam Joker" that was 20-30 years ahead of its time.
BTW: We in the Caribbean are big fans of Bollywood movies. I'm a fan of pre-1970s movies and Stars such as Waheeda Rehman, Asha parekh, Vijantimala, Nargis, Mumtaz, Helen, and of course, Hema Malini. The men include Raj Kapoor, Shammi kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Dev Anand, Dharmendra, and Dilip Kumar, among others.
This was the second Indian Movie I ever saw - the first was AAKHEN with Asha Parekh - and immediately fell madly in love with her and Vijantimala. Over the years I've watched it at least 50 times (no lie) and know the melody by heart. It's the lyrics that stump me.

I don't speak a work of Hindi but I have seen this movie since I was a little boy growing up in the Caribbean. The on-screen subtitles gives one the gist of the movie but there is not enough translations of the songs.
You have completely missed the point. The song depicts Raj Kapoor's inner insecurities. It is a great psychological moment in the movie. RK was not only a great director, he was a brilliant editor too.
"Annie" is obsessed with how lovely Kashmiris are and how ugly "other" Indians are. Kashmiris are beautiful; so are Mizos, Nagas, Oriyas, Tamils etc you with a big inferiority complex.

Freedom of expression is sacrosanct in democratic societies. In USA anyone who likes Buddhism can convert to it, no problems. Many in India converted to the Arab culture and went to Pakistan, we dont mind, it is their free will.
We admire western culture and knowledge a lot. If someone appreciates a culture we are not going to put locks on them, they are free to follow their heart. Even God does not interfere with free will. Western culture is beautiful and English is a beautiful language.
Well you are mistaken, Indians speak their own native languages Hindi, Punjabi, Telugu etc at home. Only in formal and business locations they speak English. Indians you know may be foriegn born they do not represent India. Another thing is that the number of Dane and Italian research scientists at Microsoft/Google or professors at MIT/Stanford is nowhere near number of Indians present at these places. So speaking English does not hurt in any case.
Of course one also needs the God Gift of exceptional creativity and intelligence for advanced research, but language should not be a hindrance. This was the second Indian Movie I ever saw - the first was AAKHEN with Asha Parekh - and immediately fell madly in love with her and Vijantimala. Over the years I've watched it at least 50 times (no lie) and know the melody by heart. It's the lyrics that stump me.

Well you are mistaken, Indians speak their own native languages Hindi, Punjabi, Telugu etc at home. Only in formal and business locations they speak English. Indians you know may be foriegn born they do not represent India. Another thing is that the number of Dane and Italian research scientists at Microsoft/Google or professors at MIT/Stanford is nowhere near number of Indians present at these places. So speaking English does not hurt in any case.

how do u explain so many common words wit hindi n mind u hindi is in existtence from a very long time; u cannot just luk at the script part of the language and say its a different language,so many words in urdu r either directly picked up from hindi, or the pronunciation is modified a little and they r written in a modified arabic script. .I can write a hindi word called " DOST" IN English script, tat doesn not make ' DOST " a English word , it is a hindi word.
