  • Not to nitpick, but B minor is relative to D major. This is awesome stuff :D

  • @princessdendar Correct! Well spotted, I've corrected the video info, cheers; )

  • @mattchurchill to be much correct B minor Dorian is relative to D major Lydian, just sayin.. someone could get it wrong

  • Hey man awesome improvisation i really liked it and can you please tell me the tabs of the lick you're doing throught 0:59 - 1:04 that's so great i would so appreciate it thx =)

  • i was also wondering if you could make a video showing me some licks, (that you show the lick, then play the lick slowly after it) that you commonly use with any of the modes, im starting to get more comfortable with the modes, and it would help a ton if you showed me licks that you used. Thanks

  • hey matt, im having difficulty with the modes, ive memorized them and can sort of improvise with them, but im not sure how to get to your level and create my own licks, im not sure if its the way im approaching it or what, ive always thought that you were supposed to start with the ionian root on the key your playing in, but your starting with the dorian root on B, im cofused because im trying to learn how to solo with the modes on my own and im having difficulty

  • @Cookieblood1 Hey man, there's no 'correct' starting point with any scale, it's the group of notes that you are using that determines the scale. For example, if the key you're jamming in is B minor and the scale you're using consists of the same notes as the A major scale, then regardless of your starting point, you're using the B Dorian scale. Hope that makes sense in some way?! Cheers dude, good luck.

  • brilliant playing mate 10/10 awesome fretboard knowledge, i aspire to play like this well in!

  • madness!!!!!!!!!

  • fuck that Jeep,,, gimme rocknfknroll \,,/

  • kinda trippy

  • Hey you're killin that boss!!!! Great tone and feel.

  • dorian jazzy scale is it

  • Beautiful tone and timing!! Do you have any recommendations on how to get this so smooth and flowing? Or do you just recommend time? lol

  • @lilticklez I'd recommend learning the major scale in a 3 note per string pattern (if you don't already know it) and practice alternate picking with a metronome slowly. It can be dull, but it really helps your fluidity. Thanks for the comment bro.

  • @mattchurchill Thanks you for your real and helpful recommendation! Really kind of you

  • @mattchurchill great suggestion.

  • @clarkkentingit

Yes that's right, dorian and pentatonic go hand in hand.

  • so smooth man please tell me your gigging and stuff, cause if you are not its a shame.

  • Some of your licks have a Joe Bonamassa feel about them but I can tell you have many many influences that you take things from. Great sound, lovely SG and amazing playing! All the best

  • you're great!!! BRAVO ;)

  • great stuff, here form argentina, going crazy with Dorian! Thank you, bests,

  • really nice beautiful playing.

  • Ok, so let me see if I can get this right... You are soloing in the Dorian mode, starting on the Bm. That would put your natural scale as A, and the relative minor at F#? And the shape you play for the Dorian mode is almost exactly like the shape for the natural minor except you have a raised 6th? I am trying to figure this stuff out but its complicated : ( Help me if I got it wrong...

  • @lando885 It's very simple. To play B Dorian, simple play the A major scale over B. The shape of every scale can be played the same, it just depends what key you're in. Take it easy.

  • @mattchurchill Does that change depending on if the B is major or minor?

  • Beautiful Solo ^_^

  • great play, sound too

  • richie kotzen?

  • @panchox7909 I'm a big fan.

  • i really appreciate the way you infuse melody into your improv. It makes everything tasteful and interesting. you are a great player, please please please continue making the awesome videos.

  • Thanks for making this video Matt. You're a very inspirational player to me.

  • @danenator No, thank YOU. It is a great feeling to know I've inspired another player. music is there to be shared! Take it easy and thanks again for the comment.

  • Groovy dude, like the slide downs at 2:15.

  • is that a track you recorded yourself to play over ?

  • notes to the pentatonic, when I have dabbled with modes before I have done what you have recorded a few relevant chords, jammed a little, then hopefully entered the zone as u have,,,,,,,further to this you get the real knowledgeable guys who can play a different scale/mode over individual chords,,,,,,,,i cant begin to imagine how a brain copes with that and still manage to play a tune!!!!! What do u think?

  • Wow, love the tone, the groove, you sound like you were in the zone with that!! I am inspired to have a go at Dorian now!

I have been looking at a few rock/metal players tabs in the mags recently and figure that when they use modes it is really them just adding a couple of passing

  • dorian suits that SG so nice!

  • The title of this video lacks sense, a minor scale is a mode already and dorian is mode both off of ur ionian mode (major scale) so ur playing a mode ona mode??? haha

  • @narc0tlc Maybe I should put the word 'Dorian' in brackets then? as it IS a minor scale and the word Minor was put in the title for people who may not be familiar with modes. Thanks for spotting the 'mistake'. 5 Stars to you kid! I'm gonna check out your guitar vids. Cheers.

  • @narc0tlc I need to learn theory haha

  • so chilled and mellow! love it, and iwould have never expected this sound from an sg!

  • what chords did you use?

  • just amazing, 3 minutes soloing with the same backing and doesn't get tired of listen, you have great sense of time in your phrasing that makes the whole thing sound complete

  • Fantastic showcase of the mode. I'm definitely picking yur brain on alot of ideas here! O=)

  • Funky as hell!

  • i dont know why but seems to me that if you a have a sg and a dorian scale...you got a combo.

  • you and that Sg are amazing, what color is that?

  • @futebalmakedonia Thanks man. The colour is just the standard cherry.

  • @mattchurchill i have that color , but when i see an SG on youtube it looks brown:) lol

  • Dude there's no such thing as B minor dorian , its just B dorian , dorian is the minor mode so you dont say minor dorian. Good playin by the way.

  • what passing tones are you playing with that?

  • dorian does sound absolute quality when played like this!! v-nice

  • you are totally awesome

  • Brilliant...

  • Awesome dude! Rock on!

  • sick, can u teach us how to play like u?

  • so you can play a b minor dorian scale all over the neck. i thought the root note is supposed to be on the e string

  • bminor scale is e dorian mode. if that helps. here play a d major scale and make the root chord e minor. the dorian mode is the second mode so whatever major scale you play the second chord of the scale is the dorian mode. or if you are playing a minor scale its teh 4th note. hope i didnt confuse you more

  • smooth

  • Love it, great job man.

  • This is a slap in the face to all the people that say the SG is a novelty guitar! Sweet playing man, you've got nice feel

  • Thanks mate. I love my SG to death, I always wanted one but kept buying Gibson Les Pauls. It turned out that I prefer the SG 'cause of the upper fret access and the lightweight body is great for gigging. Do people say the SG is a novelty guitar? I must say I've never heard that. Cheers.

  • Oh lord I wish I could keep buying Les Pauls! I don't even have enough money for one! The SG does have amazing upper fret access I agree, I only have an Epiphone one though, from the 80's. It's been known for people to call it something of a novelty because of it's shape and the fact that people like Angus Young played one and rock 'wannabees' play them. It really doesn't take away from the fact it's an amazing guitar though. Check out my vids if you've got time and let me know what you think.

  • When I say I've had 3 LP's, I mean that I had to sell one to buy the next and it took a LONG time to raise the funds to buy the first one! Rich kid, I ain't : ( I'll defo check out your vids man! Cheers.

  • Ohh haha sorry! I am currently trying to raise the revenue for my first Les Paul. I love the sound so much. Thanks

  • Well Good Luck, just don't sell a kidney! You've inspired me to make more vids with my SG, cheers.

  • Thanks mate, I will try to keep myself intact but the attraction of a Les Paul is a potent force to be reckoned with! Yeah do it, it's got a lovely sound :)

  • @mattchurchill is that a gibson or an epiphone?

  • @ASPEDBUSDRIVER1 gibson

  • @ASPEDBUSDRIVER1 its an gibson, no epiphone sg has a full pick gaurd and coverd humbuckers.

  • dude can you send me a tab/explanation on that lick you do from 2:52 to 2:57? i have been trying to find that sound but i cant...your help would be greatly appreciated!!

  • I'd also love to know. I've watching it over and over and I cant seem to get that lick, its driving me nuts!

  • I'll make a vid to explain this when I have some time. Cheers!

  • nice ax

  • Excellent playing. I really enjoyed it.

You should put up some more. I'm learning from your Dorian Licks lesson.

  • very cool, 5/5

  • where can i get this backing track?

  • The backing is a loop I recorded using my Line 6 DL4 pedal.

  • groooooovy buddy, just groooovy

  • Really beautiful

  • cheers dude that is one of the best sounds I have heard in a long while. You make a little demo fill me in I will have that on itunes in an instant

  • u make those dorians sound so bluesy and jazzy, great taiste, keep it up!

  • Very smooth mate.

  • Awesome awesome awesome playing my friend! If you get the chance I would love it if you shared some of your ideas and lick concepts. Keep jamming!

  • nice!

  • those are some goddamn tasty licks dude

  • i really like your playing, do you listen to a lot of jam bands like umphreys mcgee, phish and moe.? you sounds like it

  • umphrey's is pretty much the greatest band ever, theyre so amazing live!

  • boring but good

  • Thanks...I think!

  • very very nice

  • Cheers.

  • does the dorian mode include other notes than the ionian mode or do they involve the same notes but with other start points

    nice licks btw

  • Same notes with different start points, however because the starting points are different, C Dorian would have different notes to C Ionian, making it seem like they have different whole/half steps between the notes.

  • u can think it many ways,,

like a minor scale with 6th raised or a major with 3 and 7 flat

  • If you play D major over a C chord you're playing C Dorian. You have to emphasize the C notes in the D major scale so it's actually D major in the key of C :P And ofc that's bullcrap so it's called C Dorian savvy? ^^

  • Not quite, if you play C major over a D vamp then you're playing D dorian. If you wanted to play C dorian then you'd have to use the notes from the Bb major scale over a C vamp. If you play D major over a C vamp it would sound horrible unless you're a genius!

  • Yes you're right I meant D Major over an E chord.

  • The Ionian is a major scale, but if you start from the second note of Ionian and then go one note past the octave, you have Dorian which is a minor sounding scale/mode.

To put it simpler, C Ionian would give you D dorian which is the C major scale played from D to D, instead of C to C.

Hope this helps... fancy terms for a simple concept, so if it doesn't make sense, grab the guitar and get it under your fingers and you'll be like "that's all??!"

  • hey blondie, thanks for the simple explanation mate!

  • hey matt, im wanting to know how to learn this mode "dorian" and then i figured i could work on the improv as i go. any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks

  • hey man the lick at 2:52 is insane was just wondering if you could slow it down in another video or anyting would really appreciate it

great videos by the way you and i have a very similar playing style :)

  • is the mode considered minor if it has a flat 3rd ?

  • Dorian is my favorite scale def.

  • dorian isnt a scale is just a mode to play the major scale with more enfasis in certai notes

the b minor dorian mode is the same as a minor mayor SCALE

  • i know its a mode, the second mode...that doesnt mean playing it up and down isnt a scale

  • Isn`t it just B Dorian?

There`s no such thing as B Major/Minor Dorian

  • Yes you're right, you could just say B Dorian. The Dorian scale is sometimes referred to as the 'Minor Dorian' due to the fact that has the minor third and is a minor scale.

  • It`s

    1 - 2 - b3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7

    isn`t it?

  • does it start with dorian i thought it went like:

    ionian

    dorian

    phrygian

mixolydian and the other one i dont know how the fuck to spell them though

  • ionian

    dorian

    phrygian|

    lydian

    mixolydian

    aeolian

locrian ... u started right tho

  • dude, that's my rig to a tee. except I use a mxr gt od and I replaced the 498t and 490r with 57 classic and classic plus. The orig pu"s were a little to strong for my taste but you seemed to have them under control. Nice and warm. Maybe I didn't need to change em. LOL!! Keep rocking......................

  • Awesome playin, Awesome tone..and SG"s RULE.. Is that amp overdrive or pedal overdrive? it's great>>>

  • Thanks man. This is just a Gibson SG Standard plugged into a TS808 Tube Screamer with the tone turned down and a Fender Twin Reverb 65 Reissue.

  • totally awesome tone

  • awesome!

  • Once again very nice, allman brothers influence for sure. your tone is a little short on the treble in my opinion but other than that, good.

  • About the tone, I agree it's a little short on treble and I've had this said about my Tele tone too. I did purposefully spend time working on ways tone fatten my tone as these 2 guitars can be quite 'toppy' by nature (it's quite difficult to get alot of low end form an SG). Maybe I over did it a little! There's a fine line between fat and muddy and I think the tone is a little muddy here...

  • I only started listening to the Allmans about 2 years ago so it must be the SG that's influencing this comparison!

  • Hi Matt, I really like this mate!

    Shaun (Myspace, Stormcock)

  • Very, very tasteful. Thanks for your vids. Keep 'em comin!

  • at the bigening its like fade to black intro solo

  • Hi mate

I really dig your stuff, you're fantastic.

keep up the awesome playing man

    *subscribes*

  • dude, you are so incredibly GOOOOOD!

btw, what kind of guitar is that. it looks funny to me.

  • That's a Gibson SG.

  • wow. I started checking out your videos tonigh. Realy Nice! Great tone, great use uf empty space if you know what I mean. Some guys try to cram as many notes as they can in a run. You let my ears digest what they are getting. What type of loop are you using?

  • Yes! Exactly!

  • excellent! just pouring out like water , relaxed , not forced just cool.

  • Dude, I watched a few of your videos and i think you are a very talented musician, your solowork is simply amazing :)

    never stop developping, greets

  • 1 word: smooth......

Makes me put on my sunglasses and lay back.

    Amazing man, thanks for shooting

  • You have some of the best licks i've heard. Lets see some more of these SG vids. Do you also play jazz?

  • No mate. I grew up listening to metal so at heart, I'm a rocker! I love listening to jazz, Kenny Burrell, Wes, Robben Ford, I just wish I could make sense of what those guys are doing! I'm working on incorporating jazzy phrases into my playing, but it's not easy.

    Thanks for the comment.

  • so am i, but you are coming a lot farther than I am. I wish I could do those cool little run up the guitars like you do. It seems pretty jazzy, but I can't figure out what your doing there.

  • zed, i was thinking the same thing. a few licks reminded me of planet caravan. must be the dorian sound

  • Fantastic playing :) Sounds a bit like Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath on the track Planet Caravan.

  • How are you doing that? In some parts of the song it sound like you're doing three or four not sweeps and then descending again.

  • excellent playing, one of the guitarists who i can actually listen too on here.

Some of your licks remind me of Don Mock

  • wow!

  • .. holy hell that is amazing..

  • Wow, man, that's really good stuff. The smooth handling of the scales gives you a very unique style.

  • so great! this is the purpose behind the whole subscription thing. if feel like i should being paying for these lessons. matt, i love your mixture of styles and techniques. are you familiar with phil keaggy? im sure you are compared to a hundred guitarist a day. but you have a lot of similarities with his guitar work. cheers.

    joey.

  • I have only recently discovered phil keaggy on YouTube. I love his acoustic stuff with the the Loop pedal. does he do much on electric guitar?

  • yes, youd have to search a little bit. its not really main stream stuff. but incredible.

  • Yea! I saw him back in high school on the mid 80's -he was my first concert. My parrents only let me see him because he is a Christian and they figured there wouldn't be any dope smokin' there.lol I sat at the front of the stage the whole concert and was in awe. He's missing one of his finger tips on either one or more of his fingers(his fretting hand)-happened in Vietnam.

  • I saw Phil Keaggy back in the 70s. Your style is very much like his on the electric in my opinion. Try and find some stuff he did with a band called David. The album was called (How the west was one) Just awesome playing, you got the licks and the feel :)

  • Absolutely stunning xD

    That's seriously amazing

  • Smooth as silk with super phrasing. 5 stars.

  • very smooth, i enjoyed it.

  • very god man....
