Hey man awesome improvisation i really liked it and can you please tell me the tabs of the lick you're doing throught 0:59 - 1:04 that's so great i would so appreciate it thx =)
i was also wondering if you could make a video showing me some licks, (that you show the lick, then play the lick slowly after it) that you commonly use with any of the modes, im starting to get more comfortable with the modes, and it would help a ton if you showed me licks that you used. Thanks
hey matt, im having difficulty with the modes, ive memorized them and can sort of improvise with them, but im not sure how to get to your level and create my own licks, im not sure if its the way im approaching it or what, ive always thought that you were supposed to start with the ionian root on the key your playing in, but your starting with the dorian root on B, im cofused because im trying to learn how to solo with the modes on my own and im having difficulty
@Cookieblood1 Hey man, there's no 'correct' starting point with any scale, it's the group of notes that you are using that determines the scale. For example, if the key you're jamming in is B minor and the scale you're using consists of the same notes as the A major scale, then regardless of your starting point, you're using the B Dorian scale. Hope that makes sense in some way?! Cheers dude, good luck.
@lilticklez I'd recommend learning the major scale in a 3 note per string pattern (if you don't already know it) and practice alternate picking with a metronome slowly. It can be dull, but it really helps your fluidity. Thanks for the comment bro.
Some of your licks have a Joe Bonamassa feel about them but I can tell you have many many influences that you take things from. Great sound, lovely SG and amazing playing! All the best
Ok, so let me see if I can get this right... You are soloing in the Dorian mode, starting on the Bm. That would put your natural scale as A, and the relative minor at F#? And the shape you play for the Dorian mode is almost exactly like the shape for the natural minor except you have a raised 6th? I am trying to figure this stuff out but its complicated : ( Help me if I got it wrong...
@lando885 It's very simple. To play B Dorian, simple play the A major scale over B. The shape of every scale can be played the same, it just depends what key you're in. Take it easy.
i really appreciate the way you infuse melody into your improv. It makes everything tasteful and interesting. you are a great player, please please please continue making the awesome videos.
@danenator No, thank YOU. It is a great feeling to know I've inspired another player. music is there to be shared! Take it easy and thanks again for the comment.
notes to the pentatonic, when I have dabbled with modes before I have done what you have recorded a few relevant chords, jammed a little, then hopefully entered the zone as u have,,,,,,,further to this you get the real knowledgeable guys who can play a different scale/mode over individual chords,,,,,,,,i cant begin to imagine how a brain copes with that and still manage to play a tune!!!!! What do u think?
Wow, love the tone, the groove, you sound like you were in the zone with that!! I am inspired to have a go at Dorian now!
I have been looking at a few rock/metal players tabs in the mags recently and figure that when they use modes it is really them just adding a couple of passing
The title of this video lacks sense, a minor scale is a mode already and dorian is mode both off of ur ionian mode (major scale) so ur playing a mode ona mode??? haha
@narc0tlc Maybe I should put the word 'Dorian' in brackets then? as it IS a minor scale and the word Minor was put in the title for people who may not be familiar with modes. Thanks for spotting the 'mistake'. 5 Stars to you kid! I'm gonna check out your guitar vids. Cheers.
just amazing, 3 minutes soloing with the same backing and doesn't get tired of listen, you have great sense of time in your phrasing that makes the whole thing sound complete
bminor scale is e dorian mode. if that helps. here play a d major scale and make the root chord e minor. the dorian mode is the second mode so whatever major scale you play the second chord of the scale is the dorian mode. or if you are playing a minor scale its teh 4th note. hope i didnt confuse you more
Thanks mate. I love my SG to death, I always wanted one but kept buying Gibson Les Pauls. It turned out that I prefer the SG 'cause of the upper fret access and the lightweight body is great for gigging. Do people say the SG is a novelty guitar? I must say I've never heard that. Cheers.
Oh lord I wish I could keep buying Les Pauls! I don't even have enough money for one! The SG does have amazing upper fret access I agree, I only have an Epiphone one though, from the 80's. It's been known for people to call it something of a novelty because of it's shape and the fact that people like Angus Young played one and rock 'wannabees' play them. It really doesn't take away from the fact it's an amazing guitar though. Check out my vids if you've got time and let me know what you think.
When I say I've had 3 LP's, I mean that I had to sell one to buy the next and it took a LONG time to raise the funds to buy the first one! Rich kid, I ain't : ( I'll defo check out your vids man! Cheers.
Thanks mate, I will try to keep myself intact but the attraction of a Les Paul is a potent force to be reckoned with! Yeah do it, it's got a lovely sound :)
dude can you send me a tab/explanation on that lick you do from 2:52 to 2:57? i have been trying to find that sound but i cant...your help would be greatly appreciated!!
Same notes with different start points, however because the starting points are different, C Dorian would have different notes to C Ionian, making it seem like they have different whole/half steps between the notes.
If you play D major over a C chord you're playing C Dorian. You have to emphasize the C notes in the D major scale so it's actually D major in the key of C :P And ofc that's bullcrap so it's called C Dorian savvy? ^^
Not quite, if you play C major over a D vamp then you're playing D dorian. If you wanted to play C dorian then you'd have to use the notes from the Bb major scale over a C vamp. If you play D major over a C vamp it would sound horrible unless you're a genius!
The Ionian is a major scale, but if you start from the second note of Ionian and then go one note past the octave, you have Dorian which is a minor sounding scale/mode.
To put it simpler, C Ionian would give you D dorian which is the C major scale played from D to D, instead of C to C.
Hope this helps... fancy terms for a simple concept, so if it doesn't make sense, grab the guitar and get it under your fingers and you'll be like "that's all??!"
hey matt, im wanting to know how to learn this mode "dorian" and then i figured i could work on the improv as i go. any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks
Yes you're right, you could just say B Dorian. The Dorian scale is sometimes referred to as the 'Minor Dorian' due to the fact that has the minor third and is a minor scale.
dude, that's my rig to a tee. except I use a mxr gt od and I replaced the 498t and 490r with 57 classic and classic plus. The orig pu"s were a little to strong for my taste but you seemed to have them under control. Nice and warm. Maybe I didn't need to change em. LOL!! Keep rocking......................
About the tone, I agree it's a little short on treble and I've had this said about my Tele tone too. I did purposefully spend time working on ways tone fatten my tone as these 2 guitars can be quite 'toppy' by nature (it's quite difficult to get alot of low end form an SG). Maybe I over did it a little! There's a fine line between fat and muddy and I think the tone is a little muddy here...

Yea! I saw him back in high school on the mid 80's -he was my first concert. My parrents only let me see him because he is a Christian and they figured there wouldn't be any dope smokin' there.lol I sat at the front of the stage the whole concert and was in awe. He's missing one of his finger tips on either one or more of his fingers(his fretting hand)-happened in Vietnam.
I saw Phil Keaggy back in the 70s. Your style is very much like his on the electric in my opinion. Try and find some stuff he did with a band called David. The album was called (How the west was one) Just awesome playing, you got the licks and the feel :)
Not to nitpick, but B minor is relative to D major. This is awesome stuff :D
