MOST N. Amarican amb. drivers are slow as turtles, rarely use sirens, never take risks, cannot navigate through traffic. In Europe the streets are 3x narrower, yet the drivers go 5x faster! I've got policemen in family, so i've seen much of emergency driving in Europe. I hope I'll never need to call 911 in Ameeerica,otherwise i might puke to death riding with you

Not to mention we have a lot of laws against us,in my state we are only permitted to travel 10mph over the speed limit, and we have to make a full stop at every red light. it makes me sick when I see an ambulance stopping before every intersection and obeying the speed limit!!! in Europe we drive the wrong way, over pavements, tram tracks, parks and barely slow down at red lights!

I can only speak for Toronto but I know the drivers here are among the stupidest most incompetant people in the world. If we DON'T stop the ambulance we WILL be hit. Strobe lights, siren, large white/blue truck....we are amazingly invisible. Personally I want to go home after work with no broken bones.

Once I was driving a rental car in Mississauga and a police cruiser just stood in front of a junction with his sirens on for 15 seconds! I stopped to give him way, but others just kept passing me on both sides.. I was astounded! If I were the cop I would stop and taser each of them:>

@euroboi7 Most texts books in the states agree that personal safety is prioritized above getting to an emergency scene. Picture this: an ambulance wrecks en route. Now you have the original call that still needs to be responded to, in addition to you're wreck. Just bc you're running lights and sirens doesn't mean you have absolute right-of-way, that's under the rules of driving with due regard. In most cases, and ambulance can travel 10-15 mph over the posted speed limit excluding intersections.

How many accidents involving emergency vehicles do you have over there? I would venture to say a lot more than we do over here. We drive fast, but we also drive with caution. It would be pointless to drive 150MPH with a coding patient in the back just to get into an accident and kill the patient our selves, and potentially some random civilian.

I think what people need to realize also is the stress that comes with seeing dealth day in and day out. EMT's are subject to seeing dealth allot, and some people are to sick and hurt to fix but you try and when you fail it sucks. Gotta relieve stress. I mean most states have a team that is deployed automatically to help with stress in certain events like mass casualty and event involving a death of a co-worker or child. But the other ones your on your own.

Just because someone is an EMT doesn't mean all their work is 911's. Most EMT's work for transport companies and spend something like 12 hours a day sitting in the truck going from hospital/dialysis center/nursing home to hospital/ dialysis etc. I'd like to see anyone do this job and not make some sort of fun out of it.

thats not totally true... if they work in a transport company. they have whats called MVO's "Motor Vehicle Operator" you dont have to be a Paramedic, EMT or CFR to be one all you need is a valid Drivers License and it does exist here in NY outside of the 5 Boros. they hve volunteer ambulance corps. wich you can be a drier or attendant...no state cert. req.

In SC we have just drivers where I work. Thats what I do and im usually put with an Intermediate EMT. The emergency trucks need at least a basic emt and a paramedic but the convalescent truck I work on only needs a driver and a basic emt since we transport people to dialysis.
