wow thats pretty good for a five month old. it helps that saints are a little more laid back. my boy is a mix of bulldog, boxer, german shepherd, and lab retriever so its a little more complicated with him. he does it though :)
This is nothing! My saint is a week shy of 4 months and she knows Stand-Stay, Sit, Sit-Stay, Down, Down-Stay, Come, Go, Yes, No, Up, Off, Shake, Heel, Halt, Gentle, Speak, Drop-It and Find. Sounds to me like you should work with him a little more often.
I'm have been training my saint...shes 3 months right now and she is catching on very fast. Shes pretty smart but hte biggest thing is to find some type of motivation for them like a treat. mine is a pig so anything pretty much works but she really likes peices of chicken. she will learn anythign if i have those.
do you have any tips on how you trained your st bernard ? i have a 3 month old and i've started training him. he knows how to 'sit' -- but i want to teach him more ! have any tips ?
saint bernards are in the lowest 25% in terms of learning commands. Border Collies, golden retrievers, all learn commands after less then 5 times. The Saint was somewhere between 60-80. I'm not knocking them. I actually have one, and he is trained. They just arent one of the smarter canines.
st bernards are very very smart mine is 4months old she will sit,lie down, get back up again and give me the paw and we are teaching her t twirl at the moment and she is getting thew hang of it!! when we bring her 4 walks she is v good and stays rite by our side with or without the lead.i love her!!i cant imagine life without her now!!!ellie belly!!!
When I am walking her outside, if she happens to get loose from her collar, which has happened twice, she just darts away from me and is almost impossible to catch. She will run quite a distance and then run back and get close to me and try to play a game. When i get close to her she will take off again. Fortunately the only two times that this has happened I have been able to catch her, but seeing how well your saint obeys you. I was wondering if you had any suggestions for me.
I adopted a 2 year old saint back in December and she is pretty much my life. I adopted her from a couple that was getting divorced and could not keep her. They did not give her much attention and she stayed in their basement or an a chain all the time.
Since I got her she has been a perfect dog. She stays loose in my house and sleeps in my bed. She never has an accident and she is very protective and attached to me. She only has one fault.
My saint was just born and i'll be picking her up in about 6 weeks so just curious did you do the training all yourself or did you bring him to some obedience classes?
Well, the most effective thing is to train the dog yourself, because of the potentially incredble bond you can easily develope if you dedicate your hours to him or her, and it CAN be hard, which is why personal trainers cost you in the first place...
Hey Brewskyxxx why did you erase all those things you wrote about yourself? You know,.. about your big ugly nose,.. the fact that you look like a man,... all that stuff that made me laugh, about how you suffer from being kinda retarded,.. how terrible it must be!!, to be a women who looks like a man, and on top of that, has a WORLD of mental issues!
my St. Bernard spends more that half the day sleeping.. Is that normal or is he just lazy? because i take him for walks and play for him at the park so i know hes not outta shape.
@mihawk1 I'm pretty sure it's normal. Saint's are very lazy big babies. As long as you take them out and maintain their weight, its all good. They LOVE just crashing on the couch as long as they aren't alone. If they are just in the same room as their human they will be very content. Lazy and sleeping half the day is perfectly normal. Unless it's a puppy, (around a year or younger) it may be a bit bad cuz they should be hyper, but i wouldnt worry until it no longer wants to go out. then worry.
I love giant breeds. They are always so obedient. KIsses to your boy! I've got an 11 month old Great Pyr. He's wonderful and listens wonderfully like your boy.
my westie knows all these tricks, but cannot learn "stay"
im teaching her to close the door, circle, wave and stay.
she already knows lots of other tricks, cuz she's very smart. Every1 that knows her says so. Sit, lie down, crawl, beg (sit up), walk on two legs, off, open the door, give me your paw, rollover, play dead, high 5 and a little bit of wave. She is a very clever bitch, as you can see!! Maybe I'll post a video all that on u tube. maybe :P
its because the sound on the camera is a bit slower. every order now looks like the bernard done sumtin rong, and she said the needed words just to make it look she said him to do it. but no, older cameras have always a bit slower sound, dont worry about it! :D
huskies are fun. if you are thinking of getting one, heres a tip. buy lots of toys. plush dolls, kong toys, those little rubber tires. don't get raw hide or stuff a husky can choke on. if you don't have a backyard, look at exercising him or her about an hour a day. oh, and if you care a whole ton about your house being hair free, be aware huskies shed alot. they don't have much of a scent, but their shedding is hell. they're very loveable. if you have patience, go for it.
my saint bernard's name is Tango AKA Doofus. he shakes, sits, lays down, and fetches. my neighbors saint bernard is named Anabel. she speaks, fetches, sits, lays down, etc.
wow!! hes 5 months old!!! i love saint bernards!! they r awesome!!! my uncle hasa saint bernard named samson hes HUGE!! but hes also a relly good dog!! nice job!!!!!!
Wow! You are so lucky. I have a 2 year old Saint Bernard, and he is the dumbest dog I've ever known. I knew some were smart. Mine, he doesn't like meat. He loves bananas. And he's HUGE. He won't eat anything but fruit.(except for dog food)And he actually sits on the couch. It really hurts when he sits on your lap. You have a great dog.
i think mines will be a bumb ass too, she does whatever she wants to do. but i got a lil time with her cause she;s only 2 months. so hopefully she'll change.
He was kind of obedient, the only thing was that the woman threw some commands right after the dog actually sat down and laid down.. So they were not actual commands, the dog did it by himself. You made him overobedient :)
He is still a puppy, so as long as he is connecting the word with what he just did. Although he eventually will need to learn to wait for the commands, he is still learning and growing
A very beautiful dog! Just one word of caution from one that learned the hard way. Watch the ears carefully. If they get mites or for some other reason start to shake their heads they can break the blood vessels in the ears. That happened to our beautiful saint and after surgery to repair the problem he threw a clot and died. That was 15 years ago and we still miss him, he was the best dog we ever had.
We tried to keep our saints ears clean, it just happened anyway Our vet said it is not unusual in the breed that they shake so hard when they do shake that combined with the ear size just makes them more likely than many breeds to have the problem. Our dog was about 5-6 years old at the time and very healthy otherwise. I just want new saint owner to be aware of the potential problem.
Uh DUH! This could be an advanced stage of training. In advanced stages of training, you do NOT reward the dog. You only reward the dog in the beginning to get them to understand the commands. DUH!
this is a true thing that happens! it's not a chain letter! it's kinda scary at first but it really works!! paste this message into 3 comments and press ALT F4 and your crushes name will appear on the screen!!! its soo weird!
My Saint (Thor) also started obedience classes at this age. They grow very fast, and unlike common opinion, they are quite active. And strong. It's not that they become violent, but you have to train this dogs while their size allows you to control them. Otherwise, you can't go for a walk with them. Ever tried to stop an adult untrained Saint from chasing a cat or eating from garbage bags...?
*lol* I kinda noticed that, too! ;) Buuuut, he does seem to be an obedient dog, it just seemed that the commands were a little off. Beautiful dog, though. =)
Yes it is! I uploaded my video twice to see if it would fix the problem but for some reason the sound is about three seconds behind the video actions, which defeats the point of my video.
