Good question. I'm 5'8'' and I cut my irons about an inch and was thinking about cutting then even more. I like a fairly steep golf swing and I want the same plane somebody like Ernie Els uses. Aside from swing plane, a shorter club will diverge less from the path for a same angular deviation, a clear advantage. And if you wonder about loosing distance just add the lead equivalent.
Well Ireland is a great example of keeping your ball low. You need to keep it mid to low to combat the harsh winds where you are from. High is bad. trust me.
yeah I was surprised how low the flights were. I watched the welsh open on the european tour and Michael Campbell's ball flight was incredibly low all the way round. probably helped him win the us in 05 I think
You can really see Els' little hitch at the top in all his full swings. I really do wonder where he picked that up, and whether it had something to do with the injury.
i start to turn my hips on the downswing before the club completes going fully back as to create lag and by lower body turn and to initiate the downswing by the turn as Hogan said so i guess i need to practice more and more to get my timing right isn't it??????
because lower body creates all the power and this early turn of the hips helps me in pulling of the hand by the turn. the turn puuls my hand. Am i practising right??????????
Big arc, strong release, centerface contact. True swinging motion, as opposed to levering-pushing-inefficient motion.
Think about how many players (esp. younger players) you see at the practice tee working like crazy on "positions," to the point where they have the appearance of a good swing but not the actual substance or heart of a swinging motion. And about 80% of them can't hit the ball on the sweetspot, either.
Actually, I think Tiger's swing is mechanically about as good as it gets, and when he's right, I wouldn't really characterize it as levering-pushing; it's more of a swinging motion with a lot of force applied, right up to the redline, but without breaking down the true swinging motion. Despite the more forceful appearance, he has a really great-looking, natural release and a totally free swing of the arms.
i am more talented than Sean.Tell sean that i'll take him on because he has a great swing, D:))
so you mean to say that tiger has the true swinging motion but he puts a lot of effort in it. if he does then how come he's world no.1 why not peolpe with effortless swing also flexible like adam or fred or ernie himself are world no.1
i think it all comes down to the determination blah blah blah.....
Yeah, Tiger has a true swing, and like every good player, he applies as much force as he can (from the middle of the body, etc.) without breaking it down. There are lots of reasons why somebody would be #1 without necessarily having the best swing, although it's really hard for me to see anybody much better out there than TW. Maybe more Snead-like aesthetically, but not "better" in terms of moving a ball from here to there.
IMHO, Tiger would still be #1 even if he weren't so great mechanically, simply because his mental strength and that predatory competitiveness he has are just miles ahead of most of the other guys, but it's also true that the reliability of his swing, particularly on the irons and scoring shots, allows him to put concrete results behind that competitiveness more often than the other top players.
Nobody ever says this, but TW plays a lot like a younger Tom Watson. Bob Toski used to say the closer Watson got to the hole, the better he was--free-swinging, long but often wild driver, more accurate with the irons, deadly with short irons, great around the greens, missed about three 5-footers in his whole life. You sure see a lot of pros doing the opposite--big drivers, but not much better with a 9-iron than with a 3-iron, and so-so with the putter. Tiger's game is made for scoring.
All these guys have huge variances in how long they can hit a specific iron. Ernie's average 9 is probably about 148-152 without pushing. I guarantee you Tiger's average PW is more like 135-140 than 170; he's hit it 170 only under certain conditions, and only all-out. It's important to note that one of the reasons Tiger has continued to improve and to stay ahead of the field is that he cut back that all-out swing, esp. with the irons.
I mean, _I_ can hit a 7-iron 200 with a good lie, but only by blasting--and I can't hit it by the hole as often. For a guy of his caliber, Tiger was notably inconsistent with short irons--this one fat and short, that one 15 yards over the green. When he moved toward control, well...that's what Hogan did, too, y'know, and Hogan played almost all his best golf after 40 because of it. The ball will go plenty far enough, even with a control swing, if you hit the right spot on the face.
As for Tiger and Ernie at/not at Valhalla and Tour Championship...yeah, if you're a real player, you want the whole field there, and it sucks that Tiger's not. But you can't asterisk people because of it. I mean, staying healthy is part of it. There have always been championships with a great player or two missing, but I gotta admit, if this were the '75 Masters and Nicklaus wasn't there...well, yeah, it'd be hard not to have that in your head when you're talking about the winner.
As for Ernie...yeah, it's a shame. He's played some solid golf since the surgery, but really hasn't really come round to great play yet. When I watch him now, I see two things: He mostly doesn't get it in the hole like he used to--doesn't hit as many irons close, doesn't make many bonus putts. And swingwise, he seems to lack a certain dynamic quality at the start of the downswing, which might have something to do with the knee. It sucks, bc I really like him, and I hope he gets back.
if i produce too much lag, then i dont release the club at the bottom(square) so i usually swing decently with controlled distance. cant get more distance. thats why it amazases me.
you hit 7 - 200 me only - 155yds or so i'm a strong a player and you are 47 n i'm 17 i should be hitting more than you
I gotta kill a 7 for 190-200. Normal is around 170-75--but then, that's with a 7-iron that would've been almost a six-iron only 15-20 years ago (bc of loft). Add the newer balls, etc.
I'll tell you this: I definitely hit it further now than I did when I was 25, and I was below scratch at that age. Some of that's equipment, some improvement in technique. I'm just saying, you have every reason to think you'll continue to hit it longer every year, as long as you're doing the right things.
How to get distance? Short answer is: pure contact (sweet spot) and a relatively shallow angle of approach, from the inside. Swing characteristics that tend to produce this are a strong coil (note--that's not quite a synonym for "turn"); starting down from the ground up, with no over-the-top (shoulders last, not first); strong release, no flip and no block. And it's just that simple. ;-)
i hit my PW about 120 yds. sometimes 130 or so but i cant hit it further than that. if i try i would certainly swing harder my hands outracing my lower body , also have the tendency to loose tha angle b/w the lead arm and the shaft.
i mean to say how do you get more distance????
by swinging fast??? a fast swing maintaining the angle thats the lag???sweet spot of course... i cant swing fast otherwise its all haywire...
You oughta swing a wedge at whatever speed it takes to hit a 20-foot circle 8 times out of 10. Absolutely no point in going harder than that. Whether that's 107 or 145 doesn't matter.
one more thing is that what starts the backswing???? the right hand n the shoulders or the left hand (for left handed)
because in order to get the lag,i pull my right hand in the downswing but i get flatter on the way down and i dont get the proper release. Should the right hand grip(left handed) be the one leading the golf swing or the body turn pulling the hands down????
Don't worry about buzzwords like "lag" or "keeping the club in front of you" or any of that lame-o stuff.
I mean, you've opened up a huge discussion here in a couple of ways. First, you ask 12 pros what they feel starts the backswing OR the downswing, you're gonna get about 8 or 10 different answers. When you're playing your best, when you're absolutely striping it, what does it feel like to you?
As for body v. hands and/or arms leading the club down, that's another one where it just depends on what your body's like, what your inclinations are, and what you already do naturally. I'm 6-3 and was a sprinter, with a lot of speed in the so-called "big muscles," so when I go at it hard with the body, it tends to break down these long arms. Somebody else with a different physical makeup and different instincts might need to feel that he's "driving the body," or whatever.
Having said that, though, I do think there's too much talk about "driving the body" and all that, and that it's been harmful to a huge majority of golfers. A pro can feel like he's doing that because he's already developed a good arm swing and full release of the hands and club, but almost all amateurs and even a lot of good players who haven't gotten to that "second-nature" point yet need to tone down that big-muscle rotary action. Hank Haney covers this really well in his book.
Comparing to good standards no. I hit my 5 wood 240. Not bragging or anything but jus saying. Try working on your swing speed and get up just a little. Dont try to kill it though. You generate swing speed in your legs and hips, not your arms. Jus keep that in mind.

He lifts the club, or looses the angle his wrist hinge creates at the top of his swing.
