My favourite movie of all time. Everything about it is magnificent! Nahon is astounding, his face is a mask of bitterness and loathing But i disagree with those who says it doesn't have a happy ending, in my opinion it really has!
Has anyone seen the reference to SCT in "the wire"? It really stunned me, I had to rewind to hear it again..
Sorry about that, didn't want to spoil it for you, that's why I deleted it. You're too fast for me!
I wonder if it was in the script or if the actor ad-libbed it? He seems to be in pretty grim and low budget movies himself, so maybe he did it as a tribute? Also, it is not the kind of movie you'd think a homeless crackhead in Baltimore would see, so it adds a bit to Johnny's back story.
An appropriate tribute, yes. The Wire is at times bleak and cynical, as is SCT. Pure beauty and poetry.
I don't know If you have seen 'irreversible' also done by the same director. Although the storyline is focused on other man, the butcher appears on the beginning of the film (which is in fact the end of it :P) and says something like 'I'm here because I've slept with my daughter'.
I first saw irreversible then this film so I didn't catch that at first. It's is not a happy ending then,
After the film I wasn't shocked but ... depressed and suicidal. Horrible
@splash6667 Yep, I saw that! Lovely callback by Noé there. Still, it was pretty obvious that The Butcher would end up in jail sooner or later. I woud still count that as part of the happy ending, and in complete harmony with Noés theme of the crushing inescapability of existence. (Sorry, that might have sounded horribly pretentious.)
@jackson5rendel S02E04, Hard Cases, around 50 minutes in. Johnny and Bubbles are walking up to a radiator to steal it (apparently placed there as a bait by Omar, who have heard Bubbles is looking for him). Johnny is telling Bubs about this film he saw, where this guy has a daughter who is mute, the wife leaves him, the daughter has her first period, and the guy thinks she's been raped...
« Tu vois pas que maintenant ton bébé n'est plus qu'un steak, un bout de viande éclaté. Au moins, lui, il aura eu la chance de jamais voir ta sale gueule »
@Lovertits9 What the hell ? It's got that gooey tacked-on happy ending most '90s flicks had. With pederasty.
Sure it's 'nihilistic', sure it's 'dark' and 'deeply depressing' ( and NOT in a good way; not even a good bleak noir one ), but this isn't IN ANY WAY near a frickin' masterpiece. And the only 'extremity' I got here was Gaspar Noe's love for his own lame-ass bullshit.
THE MOVIE AIN'T WORTH IT, PEOPLE ! A total false flag.
@PGMAMustDie... well that's your opinion and you're welcome to it, but i'll ask the same question that's been asked a million times on youtube: if u don't like it, why are you here commenting on it?
too many people are obnoxiously determined to voice their opinions where they needn't be voiced. personally, liked it. i think it was a masterpiece. just because you don't agree doesn't mean you need to be an asshole about it.
@TheLio666, yes Irreversible is a great movie also! I have not had the chance to see Into the Void yet, unfortunately, but I've wanted to for quite a while now. I have heard good things.
Don't complain about not having english subtext. If you wanted it so badly you can get it. This is a hard movie, have no dillusions this is mainstream. It is a great movie but do not think your friends will enjoy it. The first time you watch it you can pick your ending but it will not let you be happy with it.
Ce qui me fait peur c'est de voir uniquement des anglo-saxons poster leur commentaires...

s02e04 (i could tell you the exact time, but you'll have more fun finding it yourself)
It's not a character you'd think of as a fan of french cinema. but then, who in The Wire would be?

I already saw who you said it was before you deleted it. very appropriate... the wire = poetry

@frankkrunk Philippe Nahon is one respected french actor
always plying mad or bad persons (sometimes you just can't recognize him )
a real composition actor he begon in Jean Pierre Melville film named "LE DOULOS" with Jean Paul Belmondo
for the ending,I m not really agree with you ... the character played by Nahon became incestuous against his daughter ....
best regards

one of the darkest, most nihilistic, most deeply depressing films i've ever seen.
it's in a league of its own. certainly i wouldn't suggest it to everyone. it could practically make a person suicidal, its so dark.
but a masterpiece in this new french extremity scene.
