The relationship Swearengen has with Wu gives such great depth to his character. Even though they live in racial times, Al Swearengen respects,likes and almost treats Wu as friend and equal. Actually, I think if the times allowed, he would be friends with Wu openly. The scene at the end where he puts his hand on Wu's back as he goes out the back door(with Wu looking Al in the eye) seems to tell a deeper story.

There was also one episode towards the end where Wu came in the back and all the working girls avoided Wu like he was a lepper. Al told the girls that , when Wu left , everyone of them better treat him like the most handsome/rich white man they had ever seen or he was going to beat the ones that didn't.
