@DeepydeepyDeepydeepy I would think a newer model would be out by now, unless things like the iPad have made this type of computer obsolete. I hope not, since this is an actual computer and tablets just run apps.
@cutecavity I am not sure about that. I think when we bought it we had to buy Office as an add-on. It has been a while though, so it may come with it now, but I would be surprised if it did.
@loomis2 In order to get Microsoft Office, you can only get it as a CD-ROM option that comes shipped with it. It does not come pre-loaded on the machine: you have to install it yourself, although in order to install it, you must opt for the optional external optical drive in order to read discs, as there is no integrated optical drive.
@loomis2 Well, that's how I got Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010 on my tm2t-1100 CTO. I'm not sure if it was different before I got mine on October 18, 2010.
@MrRednijlad It's like writing on a piece of paper. It is essentially one big wacom board. It can detect how much pressure you are writing with and everything!
@abood89tube It is still an awesome laptop. Now it is primarily used as a media streamer to our television, hooked up with HDMI it is like having a huge computer monitor. We have a wireless mouse and keyboard for it and it is nice! But when we need it as a regular laptop it is really easy to just unplug the hdmi cable and go.
@abood89tube In very certain conditions the screen can be too shiny, like outside at noon on a sunny day. Mac's have had very shiny screens for a long time and many people have been very happy with them, so this should be no different.
As for build quality, I have no complaints and I have had no problems. It isn't a tank, but it isn't some cheap knock-off either.

love this because it is a cheap tablet and also has a keyboard and is small and very portable great for school and traveling but i am also thinking about the hp mino 210 or 110. but this is awesome and yes the screen is very reflective can you please help me decide on which one i should get?
@HappiiSmiles316 The Mino is a netbook, while this is a full-fledged laptop computer. It all depends on what you plan on using it for. If all you need is a simple web browser and email machine then a netbook may be a cheaper solution. The Mino is also smaller, which could be good or bad depending on how big you would like your screen to be.
The only netbook I have used is my mom's Asus EeePC. I would recommend that one because the battery will last like 10 hours on a charge.
@Timbur44 I barely notice it anymore, but I use it primarily indoors where the screen shouldn't be much of a problem anyway. I would call the screen a minor problem.
@Treadstone000 That is an extra accessory you can buy from HP when you get the computer. We didn't get the external drive and so far we haven't needed it. Everything is done over the internet now anyway.
I just got one for $699 (NOT refurbished) with a stackable coupon, and free shipping, and NOT the low-end version, either. Can't wait for it to get here.
@quintonbob They are $1300 totally tricked out with a 2 or 3 year warranty. At least they were at the beginning of the year. I wouldn't be surprised to see them drop a few hundred, but I am still glad I got one when I did. We paid around $1000 for ours plus $200 for a two-year warranty.
@Donnerfozze I just tried using it outside in the bright sun, then in the shade. Both were not what I would call great experiences. Inside it works fine, and you can still see the screen when outside, but you can see yourself more, know what I mean?
@BLTRINIDAD Yes, there is an on screen keyboard, but it's a little different than what you have seen on something like an iPhone. When you want to write something with the stylus you can pop out a box where you can tap out the message on an on screen keyboard, or you can write it out by hand and watch the handwriting recognition software work its magic. It works pretty well and is a neat trick when you first see it in action.
@jessssss624 No, it doesn't come with a slipcase, but it is an optional accessory you can buy from HP when you buy the laptop. We already had a slipcase that worked well so we didn't need another one.
One Quick Question Please... Is The touchscreen and the multi touch as responsive and as quick as in an iPhone? because i want the perfect touch screen, i will be using my finger alot
@DigiM29 It is a touchscreen just like an iPhone or any other touchscreen, so the base of the finger works just fine...if you like smudges on your nice laptop screen. I like to use the digital pen that comes with it, but my wife uses her finger. And really it's her laptop so she can do whatever she wants. I'm more of a quad-core desktop guy.
@DigiM29 it is not a resistive touchscreen, it is capacitive, meaning only the base/skin of your finger works.
the old screens used pressure to determine the position of the finger this only uses the transfer of electrons, so you cant push too hard plus it is not needed
Okay quick question: is the Processor chip soldered straight into the Motherboard or is it removable? I am asking because I want to install a monster-sized quad-core notebook processing chip into this thing. If I am successful I'll be sure to share the results with everyone here.
@DirtyNeuron OK, I am with you in spirit. That sounds like a kick-ass chip for this thing. I would guess the answer is that you can't. On the bottom are two removable panels: one for ram and one for the hard drive. The only other removable part is the battery. That's not to say you can't get to the processor from there but I am not about to find out. Good luck! I am really interested if this is possible.
Hey, thank you for this review. Is it possible to make a short video of using HP Touchsmart TM2 outdoors? Some people out there says it is absolutely useless when trying to operate outdoors (because of the glossy screen). I am considering buying one but it would mean great deal to me if I could not use it on my travels in bus, trains, in park...
Hey, thank you for this review. Is it possible to make a short video of using HP Touchsmart TM2 outdoors? Some people out there says it is absolutely useless when trying to operate outdoors (because of the glossy screen).
@spritepamato We still really like it. It's a nice, well-built computer and the touch screen is more than just a gimmick; it's really useful as a tablet. The thing I'm most impressed with is how cool it always stays.
I have annotated it to show it is the tm2-1070us, but I am not sure what the big differences are between the two, and finding them on HP's website is not easy, but thanks for pointing that out. If you can spell out the differences between the two models I would appreciate it.
Now I changed it back but left the HP product link in the description. The back of our computer says tm2, then below it it says tm2t-1000 so I am not sure which version I have, or what the differences are. I think it is less confusing if I just leave it.
It is some HP tech demo/screensaver that came with the computer. I don't know if you can get it from HP or somewhere or if it is only available preloaded on the tm2.
Thanks for showing this; I was ready to buy one, but went with a Dell instead. Your video shows perfectly how crippling the mirrored screen is. The screen on my 2 year old HP Pavilion is the same type (back then they actually marketed it as an advantage! haha..); it drives me nuts in any bright environment; really distracting and tiring because my eyes tend to want focus on the farther away mirror image. Low contrast images on this type of screen are sometimes impossible to read.
Good, that's why I made the video. Not to show how bad the mirrored screen is, but to show that it has one and people can make a more informed decision. My wife doesn't seem to mind the mirrored screen at all, but I would have appreciated a different screen myself.
I have never owned a Macbook, and probably never will. I don't like being tied to the Apple ecosystem.
Again, I think it comes down to the Macbook being more powerful and more expensive. The one thing the HP computer has going for it is the swivel/touch screen. If you really don't need that, or need a more powerful computer, then this isn't for you. The HP is no slouch and can do what 90% of people need very fast, but anything graphics or processor intensive will fell slow or jerky.
@DRESHILL get this. there isn't really a big difference in performance and speed. in fact, from what i have found, hp is faster than most apple products. i dont trust apple, either, because they twist the truth to confuse you
I am trying to decide to buy this or the Dell XT2. The Dell lacks a webcam and has shorter battery life, but is a pound lighter and completely 1 inch thin. What would you recommend? Also a few questions... 1) Does the shinny screen both you? 2) How long is battery life? 3) Would you consider it heavy to carry? 4) Fingerprint magnet? and 5) Not diggin the "flower"(?) design on the cover... any way to order it differently or at does it look less "feminine" in person..? (lol) Thanks.
You mean Dell is charging two grand for a laptop/tablet computer and they don't offer a webcam? Lame. To answer your q's: 1.) Not as much as I thought it would 2.)More than I thought, about 8 hours, which is crazy 3.)I personally don't think it's heavy to carry 4.)Yes, we have a fingerprint scanner on ours, and it is extra, not standard, but built into the screen bezel 5.)It's not a flower design, but a bunch of circles.
Alright thanks. The dell outlet has them for about $1k with close to the same specs... the thing I like about the dell is the thinness and the light weight, but no webcam really sucks. Would you say the slant on the tm2 base makes the tablet awkward to use in portrait mode on a flat surface? PS- I meant does the laptop attract fingerprints not if it has a reader :)
1k is a good price, I just did a Google search and shopping links said almost 2k. The HP is heavily back-weighted since that's where the battery is. I think that makes it easier to use as a tablet since it sits in your lap very steady, and the slant is a natural angle for writing on a table. I'd say it attracts fingerprints like an iPhone would. Have a cloth to wipe it down. I can't believe it didn't come with one, but we had a nice one already.
@loomis2 loomis this is not an advantage its a poor design for hp .. they always screw the batt somehow and now you have to be careful that you comp (on laptop mode) doesnt tip cover because of the uneven back weight
I think the stainless steel design makes it more manly than their previous version of this computer, which was all plasticky black. The circle design doesn't stand out to me, but if you aren't sure about it there is nothing you can do to change it. that is all they offer.
It sounds like the Dell is a slicker, more powerful tablet, but it is almost twice as much. I can't really comment on how good the Dell is as a tablet pc, but the HP touchscreen is excellent, especially with OneNote.
tm2 or hp slate because i have an imac and was thinking about an ipad but it doesnt offer digital inking but it does offer iwork. sometimes i will have to do work on,ipad can handle but i need digital inking and i just want to right books and make sketches with out having to lug around a big laptop and a external wacomm pad also i need to check email quicky and get on facebook and watch youtube videos. was looking forward to the ipad. gonna get this or hp slate. tell me what i should get please
I don't think enough is known about the Slate right now to say what it definitely can or can not do. This is an actual laptop-type computer, not a slate or netbook or anything like that. It runs actual Windows 7 and runs actual computer programs. I would say get this since it seems like you need computer-specific tasks to be done when you aren't surfing the web.
there are only 2 downsides on this, 1 it has no dvd drive well i guess to make it slim they had to sacrifice it, and 2 the glossy screen but again it is still nice so overall it is awesome
I had one of the earlier iterations of this computer, and it was, without a doubt, the WORST computer that I have ever owned. The touchscreen is a great feature till it stops working. Maybe it was just my defect computer, but that's not cool. This new one looks good, though. Is HP making all of their notebooks look like the envy, now?
You know, I'm not 100% sure, but my guess is resistive. On a screen that size it is hard to tell the difference. It scrolls just fine, but I find myself always using the pen instead of my fingers because cleaning smudgy finger marks off a screen that size isn't fun, and the level of detail and control you get with that pen really trumps anything else.
i know that it is possible to get discrete graphics (ATI mobility radeon 4550) but do you know how smoothly Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and Bioshock 2 work
The whole computer is just more solid than the tx2z. The tx2z felt very plasticky and the keyboard wasn't too sturdy when you typed on it. This keyboard just feels right when you type on it, and it is a chicklet-style keyboard which Apple made so popular. Each key is separate from the others. I am not an Apple fan but I like this type of keyboard. A lot of newer laptops have it now.
I'm not sure how much faster one version is than the other, really. These kinds of laptops are only designed to be fast enough to do general things like internet, and Microsoft Office. It seems to run everything pretty smoothly so far, although the tech demo/screensaver dolphin thing stuttered quite a bit.
As for which screen is better outside, probably the tx2z. This new one is very reflective. My wife is the primary user of the tm2 and her lone complaint is the screen.
TPM is seen on the high end business laptops it allows you to use your finger print to log in before windows even starts, also with that you can use ultimate edition to encrypt your whole hard drive in case you lose it. its a bios level check and you would find it in the spec sheet but i dont have my tm2 yet and hp is taking forever to send it
All I can tell you is there is an optional fingerprint scanner, which we have. My wife uses it to log on to Windows and to save all her internet passwords and usernames and things like that. She has not used it to encrypt the whole hard drive and I don't know for sure if that is even an option. I certainly haven't mucked around with the Bios of the laptop yet to see what can be changed in there.
I think with the 2 year replacement plan it was like $1250-ish. You are definitely paying for the form-factor. If all you need is a normal laptop then this isn't for you. Pay half as much for a run-of-the-mill laptop. If you want to play serious games this also isn't for you. pay the same amount for a more powerful laptop. For more business-type or school work this could be perfect.
It totally, 100% depends on what you intend to use it for. For anything really processor or graphics heavy I would think you would want something with a little more horsepower. If you are looking for a nice, dependable laptop that is easy to carry around then this is pretty good. The fact that it is a very capable tablet as well just makes it awesome to us. I really can't believe how cool it stays. It has never become even remotely warm underneath, ever!
college again has started for me and after a week of useing this thing in class, learning for me has become more fun! no more note pads and less text books. w/ the program called "journal" w/ use of da pen; noteing is a blast. with most college textbooks now coming pdf. i am able to highlight key points w/out a need of a highlighter. in a class fiting 30students recording a lecture is da shit w/ its powerfull mic.
it runs intel speed uo to 1.6gz i didnt like dat no internal drive i didnt like dat either i have the touchsmart tx2z 1300 amd zm-85 processor 2.3ghz...
Hey Loomis, A few people have reported that the touchscreen function goes in to some kind of sleep mode after a set amount of time which requires them to press the screen a few more times to make it active again. Have you encountered the same problem?
My wife has been using it extensively for about a week now and she says she has not encountered this. The screen will go black after a certain amount of time as a screensaver, but she has never lost the touchscreen function on its own like you are describing.
This can be fixed by going into device manager, clicking "human interface devices" , right clicking the first "USB device" thingy there, clicking the power management tab, and then unclicking "turn off to save power".
I have two more question: I'm a gamer and I play civilization 4. Will the graphics run slow in tm2? Tm2 has upto 1.3Ghz processor and civ 4 has system requirement of 1.2 Ghz. Second, how much did it cost to upgrade RAM from 2gb to 4gb and hard drive from 160gb to 250 or 320gb? I'm gonna order it later or tomorrow.
LOL! Could THAT have been any more of a cliff hanger? xD!
So how is it? I'm REALLY interested in getting a tablet PC - I'm a digital artist, and I'll be in college in a year... Need to find something JUST right!
This baby LOOKS about right, but how is the tabletness? Do you know if it is pressure sensitive? Have you tested something like Photoshop with this?
I think it works extremely well as a tablet, especially with the PRESSURE SENSITIVE pen. As I commented below, I have the Wacom Bamboo tablet and the pen is very comparable to that. I haven't tried Photoshop on it, and probably won't be able to. The only question i would have with Photoshop is how well the computer would be able to handle it. It might be just fine with it's Core 2 Duo processor. I'm sure that info will be found elsewehere pretty quickly.
ah I was wondering if the pen is pressure sensitive and your comment answers my question. Thanks! by-the-way, why do you say you won't be able to try Photoshop on it? What prevents you? Just curious.
Yes I ordered it off the HP website, and yes it came with an ac adapter; I didn't have to order one. In fact, I don't think you can buy a laptop anywhere that doesn't come with an ac adapter. But you could buy an extra one from hp's website also. Why anyone would need two ac adapters is beyond me, but the choice is there. The computer comes with the digital pen too, and you can buy a second one from the site, but again, I don't know why you'd want to do that.
@loomis2 thanks for telling me about the pen as well i was about to order one thinking that the laptop didn't come with it...thank you for saving me more than a hundred dollars (AC adapter + pen)
What do you think about the size? I just bought an Acer 1810T about 3 weeks ago and Im seriously tempted to sell it and purchase one of these now. Im just wondering if the size of the thing makes it relatively portable for carrying to class
The size is good. It's not as small as a netbook but is was designed to act as a tablet that you could hold in your arm. It is thinner and lighter than the tz3, the laptop it's replacing, but I wish it was even lighter still. I'm sure HP is working on that as we speak for future versions. I do think it is easy to hold. I just haven't had a chance to really use it in any real-world situations like what you want to use it for to really test it out.
I'm sorry, I guess I should have clarified that you would have to have another computer to rip the disc to a file and then play the file on this laptop. Not ideal, and certainly not possible if you don't have another computer. No optical drive means no cd or dvd drive at all. Nothing to put a disc in anywhere. You have to use usb drives or files on a network or you're out of luck unless you get the external dvd drive from HP, which we didn't get.
I can't speak very specifically about the processor only to say it's a Intel dual core and the tz3 was a amd chip. It's newer so I would expect it to be faster than the tz3 but I don't have any benchmarks or anything to give you. We don't plan on using it for games, but that's not to say we couldn't if we wanted to. Sorry I can't be more in depth on that.
loomis, can u also tell me if this reflective screen is annoying or is it still usable in, for exmaple, a lecture room in the university, which is of course well lighted?
Screen looks more annoying when it is off. Sitting in front of it like you normally would you can see it just fine. The person sitting next to you might have trouble seeing it. We were using it all day today in front of that same window from the video with no problems.
The fingerprint reader is kind of handy. To start it can be used to log on instead of typing in a user password; just swipe you finger and windows logs you on. It also can be used instead of typing in data on websites. If you have to type in a username and password for sites you always go to, you can program those fields into the reader so you swipe it and it fills those in for you. Just an extra security measure that works very well.
hi loomis2 .. I'm considering buying this one. The only problem is, there's no optical drive, w/c ridiculous. Can HP customize it by installing an optical drive?? I know it sounds silly =/
You know, a few years ago not having an optical drive was more ridiculous than it is today, but optical drives still have their uses. You can not get one built into the chassis, but you can buy an external usb one from hp when you order the laptop from their site. I think this will become more and more the norm in the coming years as everything becomes downloadable and hard drives keep getting bigger and cheaper.
loomis another question: did you order the laptop directly from hp and if you did did you have to order an ac adapter from the accessories tab or did the adapter come bundled with the laptop without a separate order?
loomis how good is the microphone recording quality and range of the laptop because I am planning on getting this laptop for college and plan to record my lectures

Be careful with this product, the screen will eventually crack when you close it. It is a design flaw and HP warranty does not cover it

BLTRINIDAD 1 year ago
@BLTRINIDAD Yes, there is an on screen keyboard, but it's a little different than what you have seen on something like an iPhone. When you want to write something with the stylus you can pop out a box where you can tap out the message on an on screen keyboard, or you can write it out by hand and watch the handwriting recognition software work its magic. It works pretty well and is a neat trick when you first see it in action.

Does it come with a slipcase?
jessssss624 1 year ago
@jessssss624 No, it doesn't come with a slipcase, but it is an optional accessory you can buy from HP when you buy the laptop. We already had a slipcase that worked well so we didn't need another one.

so what dont you like about this laptop?
BLTRINIDAD 1 year ago
@BLTRINIDAD I'd say the thing we like least about the laptop is that the keyboard isn't backlit. Typing in the dark is harder than it needs to be.

One Quick Question Please... Is The touchscreen and the multi touch as responsive and as quick as in an iPhone? because i want the perfect touch screen, i will be using my finger alot
DarkGoon3r96 1 year ago
Nice unboxing! Are you able to operate the touchscreen with the base of your finger, or do you need to use your fingernail like the old tx1000?
DigiM29 1 year ago
@DigiM29 It is a touchscreen just like an iPhone or any other touchscreen, so the base of the finger works just fine...if you like smudges on your nice laptop screen. I like to use the digital pen that comes with it, but my wife uses her finger. And really it's her laptop so she can do whatever she wants. I'm more of a quad-core desktop guy.
loomis2 1 year ago
@DigiM29 it is not a resistive touchscreen, it is capacitive, meaning only the base/skin of your finger works.
the old screens used pressure to determine the position of the finger this only uses the transfer of electrons, so you cant push too hard plus it is not needed
Ronnie51026 1 year ago
Okay quick question: is the Processor chip soldered straight into the Motherboard or is it removable? I am asking because I want to install a monster-sized quad-core notebook processing chip into this thing. If I am successful I'll be sure to share the results with everyone here.
DirtyNeuron 1 year ago

I am considering buying one but it would mean great deal to me if I could not use it on my travels in bus, trains, in park...

fairydustTinkerbell1 1 year ago
@fairydustTinkerbell1
I have annotated it to show it is the tm2-1070us, but I am not sure what the big differences are between the two, and finding them on HP's website is not easy, but thanks for pointing that out. If you can spell out the differences between the two models I would appreciate it.
loomis2 1 year ago
@fairydustTinkerbell1
Now I changed it back but left the HP product link in the description. The back of our computer says tm2, then below it it says tm2t-1000 so I am not sure which version I have, or what the differences are. I think it is less confusing if I just leave it.

tanruke 1 year ago
Oh yeah? You saw that?
loomis2 1 year ago
Thanks for showing this; I was ready to buy one, but went with a Dell instead. Your video shows perfectly how crippling the mirrored screen is. The screen on my 2 year old HP Pavilion is the same type (back then they actually marketed it as an advantage! haha..); it drives me nuts in any bright environment; really distracting and tiring because my eyes tend to want focus on the farther away mirror image. Low contrast images on this type of screen are sometimes impossible to read.
videos1930 1 year ago
Good, that's why I made the video. Not to show how bad the mirrored screen is, but to show that it has one and people can make a more informed decision. My wife doesn't seem to mind the mirrored screen at all, but I would have appreciated a different screen myself.

Should I get this or a macbook pro 15 inch?
DRESHILL 1 year ago
I have never owned a Macbook, and probably never will. I don't like being tied to the Apple ecosystem.
Again, I think it comes down to the Macbook being more powerful and more expensive. The one thing the HP computer has going for it is the swivel/touch screen. If you really don't need that, or need a more powerful computer, then this isn't for you. The HP is no slouch and can do what 90% of people need very fast, but anything graphics or processor intensive will fell slow or jerky.
loomis2 1 year ago
@DRESHILL get this. there isn't really a big difference in performance and speed. in fact, from what i have found, hp is faster than most apple products. i dont trust apple, either, because they twist the truth to confuse you
fairydustTinkerbell1 1 year ago
I am trying to decide to buy this or the Dell XT2. The Dell lacks a webcam and has shorter battery life, but is a pound lighter and completely 1 inch thin. What would you recommend? Also a few questions... 1) Does the shinny screen both you? 2) How long is battery life? 3) Would you consider it heavy to carry? 4) Fingerprint magnet? and 5) Not diggin the "flower"(?) design on the cover... any way to order it differently or at does it look less "feminine" in person..? (lol) Thanks.
Marcham89 1 year ago
You mean Dell is charging two grand for a laptop/tablet computer and they don't offer a webcam? Lame. To answer your q's: 1.) Not as much as I thought it would 2.)More than I thought, about 8 hours, which is crazy 3.)I personally don't think it's heavy to carry 4.)Yes, we have a fingerprint scanner on ours, and it is extra, not standard, but built into the screen bezel 5.)It's not a flower design, but a bunch of circles.
loomis2 1 year ago
Alright thanks. The dell outlet has them for about $1k with close to the same specs... the thing I like about the dell is the thinness and the light weight, but no webcam really sucks. Would you say the slant on the tm2 base makes the tablet awkward to use in portrait mode on a flat surface? PS- I meant does the laptop attract fingerprints not if it has a reader :)
Marcham89 1 year ago
1k is a good price, I just did a Google search and shopping links said almost 2k. The HP is heavily back-weighted since that's where the battery is. I think that makes it easier to use as a tablet since it sits in your lap very steady, and the slant is a natural angle for writing on a table. I'd say it attracts fingerprints like an iPhone would. Have a cloth to wipe it down. I can't believe it didn't come with one, but we had a nice one already.
loomis2 1 year ago
Alright Thanks again!
Marcham89 1 year ago
@loomis2 loomis this is not an advantage its a poor design for hp .. they always screw the batt somehow and now you have to be careful that you comp (on laptop mode) doesnt tip cover because of the uneven back weight
ultraret 1 year ago
I think the stainless steel design makes it more manly than their previous version of this computer, which was all plasticky black. The circle design doesn't stand out to me, but if you aren't sure about it there is nothing you can do to change it. that is all they offer.
It sounds like the Dell is a slicker, more powerful tablet, but it is almost twice as much. I can't really comment on how good the Dell is as a tablet pc, but the HP touchscreen is excellent, especially with OneNote.

does it come with a remote controller and the place to put it just like tx2 used to?

RedRanger125 1 year ago
I don't think enough is known about the Slate right now to say what it definitely can or can not do. This is an actual laptop-type computer, not a slate or netbook or anything like that. It runs actual Windows 7 and runs actual computer programs. I would say get this since it seems like you need computer-specific tasks to be done when you aren't surfing the web.

I had one of the earlier iterations of this computer, and it was, without a doubt, the WORST computer that I have ever owned. The touchscreen is a great feature till it stops working. Maybe it was just my defect computer, but that's not cool. This new one looks good, though. Is HP making all of their notebooks look like the envy, now?
iDiggMGL 1 year ago
If by Envy you mean Macbook, then yes, it seems they are. But it is a better design than what they had before.
loomis2 1 year ago
they kind of look like macbook pros but they have all of that extra design and them and the keyboard looks like a Vaio keyboard.
iDiggMGL 1 year ago
is it a capacitive or a resistive?.. primarily because of that digital pen
snoopyalien24 1 year ago
You know, I'm not 100% sure, but my guess is resistive. On a screen that size it is hard to tell the difference. It scrolls just fine, but I find myself always using the pen instead of my fingers because cleaning smudgy finger marks off a screen that size isn't fun, and the level of detail and control you get with that pen really trumps anything else.
loomis2 1 year ago
It's capacitive, it has a dual touchscreen so it is capacitive and then what ever you need to use the digital pen.

why is keyboard better then tx2z / tx2
joskaprdulja 1 year ago
not only keyboard. why is it better?
I am interested to buy tablet laptop and dont know wich one to buy... :S
joskaprdulja 1 year ago
The whole computer is just more solid than the tx2z. The tx2z felt very plasticky and the keyboard wasn't too sturdy when you typed on it. This keyboard just feels right when you type on it, and it is a chicklet-style keyboard which Apple made so popular. Each key is separate from the others. I am not an Apple fan but I like this type of keyboard. A lot of newer laptops have it now.
loomis2 1 year ago
which screen is better to use out side tm2 or tx2??
yes design is really much better! I love that tm2 is not plastic fantastic!
but is it much slower? how about graphic´s card?
I dont know whic one to buy... :S
tx2 is much cheaper.
joskaprdulja 1 year ago
I'm not sure how much faster one version is than the other, really. These kinds of laptops are only designed to be fast enough to do general things like internet, and Microsoft Office. It seems to run everything pretty smoothly so far, although the tech demo/screensaver dolphin thing stuttered quite a bit.
As for which screen is better outside, probably the tx2z. This new one is very reflective. My wife is the primary user of the tm2 and her lone complaint is the screen.
loomis2 1 year ago
sry cant find it NE where. does the TM2 have Trusted Platform Module (TPM) cn U check the spec sheet?
ultraret 1 year ago
I'm not even sure what TPM is or does.
loomis2 1 year ago
TPM is seen on the high end business laptops it allows you to use your finger print to log in before windows even starts, also with that you can use ultimate edition to encrypt your whole hard drive in case you lose it. its a bios level check and you would find it in the spec sheet but i dont have my tm2 yet and hp is taking forever to send it
ultraret 1 year ago
All I can tell you is there is an optional fingerprint scanner, which we have. My wife uses it to log on to Windows and to save all her internet passwords and usernames and things like that. She has not used it to encrypt the whole hard drive and I don't know for sure if that is even an option. I certainly haven't mucked around with the Bios of the laptop yet to see what can be changed in there.

hey man im looking into buying one of these for school. how much did you pay for it if you dont mind me asking ?
louie111887 2 years ago
I think with the 2 year replacement plan it was like $1250-ish. You are definitely paying for the form-factor. If all you need is a normal laptop then this isn't for you. Pay half as much for a run-of-the-mill laptop. If you want to play serious games this also isn't for you. pay the same amount for a more powerful laptop. For more business-type or school work this could be perfect.
loomis2 1 year ago
does the tm2t worth its price? i intend to buy one
avinotion 2 years ago
It totally, 100% depends on what you intend to use it for. For anything really processor or graphics heavy I would think you would want something with a little more horsepower. If you are looking for a nice, dependable laptop that is easy to carry around then this is pretty good. The fact that it is a very capable tablet as well just makes it awesome to us. I really can't believe how cool it stays. It has never become even remotely warm underneath, ever!

Hey Loomis, A few people have reported that the touchscreen function goes in to some kind of sleep mode after a set amount of time which requires them to press the screen a few more times to make it active again. Have you encountered the same problem?
ShadoX 2 years ago

I'm gonna order it later or tomorrow.
dmainevent8615 2 years ago
Any answer is appreciated! Thanks in advanced!
werdna250 2 years ago
I think it works extremely well as a tablet, especially with the PRESSURE SENSITIVE pen. As I commented below, I have the Wacom Bamboo tablet and the pen is very comparable to that. I haven't tried Photoshop on it, and probably won't be able to. The only question i would have with Photoshop is how well the computer would be able to handle it. It might be just fine with it's Core 2 Duo processor. I'm sure that info will be found elsewehere pretty quickly.
loomis2 2 years ago

emjay1264jr 2 years ago
Yes I ordered it off the HP website, and yes it came with an ac adapter; I didn't have to order one. In fact, I don't think you can buy a laptop anywhere that doesn't come with an ac adapter. But you could buy an extra one from hp's website also. Why anyone would need two ac adapters is beyond me, but the choice is there. The computer comes with the digital pen too, and you can buy a second one from the site, but again, I don't know why you'd want to do that.

What do you think about the size? I just bought an Acer 1810T about 3 weeks ago and Im seriously tempted to sell it and purchase one of these now. Im just wondering if the size of the thing makes it relatively portable for carrying to class
ShadoX 2 years ago
The size is good. It's not as small as a netbook but is was designed to act as a tablet that you could hold in your arm. It is thinner and lighter than the tz3, the laptop it's replacing, but I wish it was even lighter still. I'm sure HP is working on that as we speak for future versions. I do think it is easy to hold. I just haven't had a chance to really use it in any real-world situations like what you want to use it for to really test it out.
loomis2 2 years ago
hey loomis thamks for the demo it was great..i have 2 questions for you ?
1 : what does it means no optical drive..i dont understand cuz you said you can rip and read dvd in other posts.
2: what processor it has. is it good enought to play games . Like can u compare it to the tx2. !
anyways thaks it was pretty useful cuz im thinking in getting one
letsallhearformetal 2 years ago
I'm sorry, I guess I should have clarified that you would have to have another computer to rip the disc to a file and then play the file on this laptop. Not ideal, and certainly not possible if you don't have another computer. No optical drive means no cd or dvd drive at all. Nothing to put a disc in anywhere. You have to use usb drives or files on a network or you're out of luck unless you get the external dvd drive from HP, which we didn't get.
loomis2 2 years ago
I can't speak very specifically about the processor only to say it's a Intel dual core and the tz3 was a amd chip. It's newer so I would expect it to be faster than the tz3 but I don't have any benchmarks or anything to give you. We don't plan on using it for games, but that's not to say we couldn't if we wanted to. Sorry I can't be more in depth on that.

loomis, can u also tell me if this reflective screen is annoying or is it still usable in, for exmaple, a lecture room in the university, which is of course well lighted?

grmblabc 2 years ago
Screen looks more annoying when it is off. Sitting in front of it like you normally would you can see it just fine. The person sitting next to you might have trouble seeing it. We were using it all day today in front of that same window from the video with no problems.
loomis2 2 years ago
hey loomis do you have the finger print reader on yours and if so can you tell me how it works? Thanks
coolmike1994 2 years ago
The fingerprint reader is kind of handy. To start it can be used to log on instead of typing in a user password; just swipe you finger and windows logs you on. It also can be used instead of typing in data on websites. If you have to type in a username and password for sites you always go to, you can program those fields into the reader so you swipe it and it fills those in for you. Just an extra security measure that works very well.
loomis2 2 years ago
hi loomis2 .. I'm considering buying this one. The only problem is, there's no optical drive, w/c ridiculous. Can HP customize it by installing an optical drive?? I know it sounds silly =/
dmainevent8615 2 years ago
You know, a few years ago not having an optical drive was more ridiculous than it is today, but optical drives still have their uses. You can not get one built into the chassis, but you can buy an external usb one from hp when you order the laptop from their site. I think this will become more and more the norm in the coming years as everything becomes downloadable and hard drives keep getting bigger and cheaper.
loomis2 2 years ago
Hey i was wondering if you can make other videos about the pros and cons of the machine and maybe even some other reviews of it
