I am going through this right now with my almost 12 yr old lab. She was just diagnosed today with cancer in her right knee, back leg. She is having her leg amputated tomorrow. I wasn't sure I was doing the right thing, but after watching your video and hearing your story, I know I am. We are not sure yet if the form of cancer is osteosarcoma, but will know more after the amputation and the biopsy. Your dog is very beautiful...thank you for telling your story. It has helped me today.
Vader was so inspirational to us when deciding what to do with dharma our 10yo Rotti who was diagnosed with bone cancer in the shoulder in April 2011. We went with amputation and chemo & have no regrets. Dharma is now 4.5 mths past the amputation/chmo & doing extremely well. She is back tracking and went herding on the weekend - see video on Youtube 3 legged rottweiler brilliantly herding sheep. We are so proud of her & are living every moment with her. Thanks for your assistance .
reminds me of my old 3 legged dog, winnie, she was a pembroke welsh corgi-samoyed mix that lost her tail and back leg, two days after christmas we had to ut her down because she had cancer, but the stupid vet said "its just an absess" (she had a tumor in her mouth),
If by scan you mean x-ray it was around $400. I guess it usually shows up in the lungs first. The blood tests, which are much cheaper, can help determine if one has cancer too.
I have a female 10 year old rotty named Kizer and we think that she has cancer.she had it before but we got it removed. how much did it cost you to get vader the scan?
Vader Update - I took Vader to the vet last week and he received a clean bill of health! I couldn't believe it; lungs and blood work are still clear. The vet called Vader a miricle dog since it has been almost 4 years since he was diagnosed with the cancer. I hope he gives everyone else dealing with similar situations hope. He has been loving the deep snow lately and getting along just fine even with 10 inches of snow on the ground!
My beautiful Husky dog Cleo just got diagnosed with Soft Tissue Sarcoma in her front left leg. They are going to have to amputate all the way up to her shoulder. We're finding it very difficult, but your story gives us hope. Thank you.
Vader had his leg amputated up to the shoulder too; I was told that was the best way of keeping it from spreading. I'm glad Vaders story gives you hope, that's why I put it on youtube. Make sure you read my diet suggestions for when Cleo is recovering and feeling better - i really believe it has helped. Goodluck and best wishes.
Thanks for posting your videos, our 11 year old Greyhound is awaiting a biopsy report for a suspicious area in his upper right front leg, if it's not a bacterial infection or fungal infection, then he'll be facing the loss of his leg too. The vet said even at Casey's age of 11, he'd definitely do it if it was his dog. And because Casey is in such good shape otherwise, the Dr. said he should do very well on three legs too.
Vader is still doing good but is just now having a little trouble going up and down the stairs but he is 10 1/2.. He had no adverse reactions to the chemo. Feeding him sardines and egg beaters daily I think had a big effect on how good he has done. He had no issues with the surgury either. He went right up the stairs the day after his operation :)
I see that this clip is over one 2 1/2 years old. How is Vader now? My dog Bindy is suspected of bone cancer in her rear left leg. We are praying and waiting for a second opinion to be given by another Vet.
I see that Vader and many dogs that have had their regs amputated doing well on You Tube but I need some reassuarnce that the dog will not be in pain and discomfort with the chemotherapy that follows amputation.
If this video made you sad, look at my channel. It is all about how to help canine cancer. If you know you can change the lives of dogs AND families, then change them. YOU can make all the differance.
Thanks for posting this video, my rotty was diagnosed with the same condition and she's going thru the same surgery. I feel a little reliefed knowing that they can still be happy and playfull
My 11yo rottie Dutch had sarcoma 4 yrs ago and recently became deathly ill and partially paralyzed and was in constant severe pain and couldnt walk or move. He was pitiful and miserable. The vet only recommended euthanization.
In desperation I gave him some of my own low dose naltrexone and he rapidly improved over 2 days time to playing ball and going for walks in the woods and swimming. he's got some residual weakness but he's happy again and doing fine.
This gives me hope for my boy he was just diagnosed 1 week ago surgery is scheduled for thursday. He is 8 as well although a little larger at 162 pounds. Your dog looks great, it is awesome it has been three years for him!!
Hello everyone, just wanted to give a quick update. Vader is still doing great, its almos his three year anniversary of his surgery. Over Thanksgiving he had minor surgery to remove some bumps on his neck and cheek and is all healed up again. We had some snow here and MI and he loves chasing snowballs and runing through snow banks on his way to the mail box. He loves the snow. He still gets his sardines, eggs and CAS options vitamins everyday to keep him going.
@VaderTheRottweiler Congratulations on your 3 year Ampuversary! That's great news for us owners of other TriPawd Rotties who have had cancer. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Vader. You give me hope for my own 9 yo female rottie Sierra that was diagnosed with osteosarcoma last week and having the amputation on Monday. I know she will be back up on her 3 paws soon after. Can't break her spirit!
I am so glad he is doing so well... I lost my girl to the same cancer. Nothing could have been done for her. Please give him a big hug and kiss for me and my Neely R I P
Your dog is inspiring. My rott went through the same thing, her cancer has spread but the amputation has given her an extra year of life. DOG'S do Great with 3 legs!!!!
My 5 year old rottie Max has just had his back left leg amputated last thursday after going in for what shoould have been an operation to repair a damaged cruciate ligament.. they found a tumour on his knee! It was devastating news...Chemo starts 18th December.. so far so good though, Max has adapted so well to just 3 legs, its as tho he never had 4!! Watching your video of Vadar gave us so much hope that Max could adapdt well to his new life. Thanks..
Vader is still doing fine. He's always more spunky when it snows. I actually dressed him up as Dath Vader for Halloween. Feed him Omega 3 (sardines) and bone meal throughout the Chemo, I still have vader on it. I get it from Whole Foods in a crushed format. As long as the cancer doesn't come back he'll be fine.
Ok Vader is a Rad Dog - This story really touched me . I glad he's doing well - Now for The one down below about Colby !! That was SAD!!!! Brought tears to my eyes!! I'm Sorry!!
Vader keep up the good work !!! - Paul - Steph and our two Pups OCEAN and KYRIE
I believe my dog has cancer,i just took him to the vet today thinking it was a crucial ligament tear and in the xrays showed some bone loss. He is only 6 years old and im am very scared for him. I will try to do anything possible to keep him alive for a few more years. They arent sure if its a infection of the bone or cancer and if it is cancer they are worried it may have spread to the lungs. Amputation is one way but if it has spread to the lungs then i dont know what to do.What hospital is it?
I just updated the text about Vader's story with his diet which can be helpful even to healthy dogs. Just hit the "more info" button in the upper right corner of the page and look for THE DIET.
It warms my heart to hear this story. My rott "colby" was diagnosed with osteosarcoma about a month & a half ago. We did the amputation. He was getting around, eating, and playing until this past saturday morning 02-22-08. He didn't seem to have the energy to get up anymore. The following day he began coughing and hacking up blood. We met with the vet a short time later sunday to make the awful decision to say good bye to colby. What a heart breaking experiance. I miss and love him very much.
I'm sorry to hear that about Colby. How old was he? Vader has been very lucky and we are very thankful for his recovery, I know it is a rarity. Being almost 8 now we were worried that he wouldn't recovery quickly. I hope Vaders story gives hope to others dealing with the same situation and makes people like yourself at least feel a little better and understand that you did do the right thing to help Colby.
We took Colby in from the local animal control officer about 7 yrs ago. He had plans of putting him down since no one had come to claim him. We already had a female rott. The two became fast friends. The vet estimated Colby's age to be about 8ish. Our female (skylar) is 8. We've had her since she was a pup. I thank you for your kind words and encouragement. We miss Colby very much. I picked his ashes up from the vet today. ):
Great video! Did you get news coverage? Vader is beautiful, and quite a trooper. We'd love for you to share his story in the Discussion Forums on the TRIPAWDS website.
