  • Did you not have enough trucks that day and that is why you used a scraper or was it out of convenience?

  • @redheadedduckhunter Not enough trucks, dug most of the pond using a couple scrapers as rock trucks.

  • @vantagetes Maybe they should rename them as scraper trucks.

  • Your a good operator!!nice vids

  • What does kidco do with any UNWANTED or UNSUITABLE spoil such as, in this case, large rocks?

I'm assuming the bid kidco submits has provisions for what to do with this material or is it "finders keepers.............."

Those rocks could be sold to a landscaper or similar establishment for a nice profit that kidco can put in it's pocket on top of the money already being made.

Topsoil surely has value as well.

How does kidco deal with this?

  • @25mfd Its up to the client to decide what to do with them, they generally field fit a rock wall or landscape a couple big ones into a park or two. Sometimes if we have a borrow pit on site they will disappear into that, or sold to another developer (rare). Same deal with topsoil, they tell us where to pile it and then its screened later on and sold back to home owners, used in parks etc.

  • @vantagetes or (in the case of topsoil) it helps make the rocks disappear in that borrow pit. At least that's how it happens down here

  • @JimBruce42 We do the same thing, fill the pit with "unsuitable material" and then cap it with topsoil. That's why they always dig those things in the park areas!

  • @vantagetes Yeah, i remember the first job I was on, when we started backfilling the borrow pit. Being a first generation operator I'd never really known how unwanted topsoil was, so it blew my mind when we were just wasting it like that instead of respreading or screening and selling it Since then I've come to better understand, there's really no money in topsoil unless you get paid to do something with it, and that's a cost most customers don't seem to want to deal with.

  • What was the temp outside?

  • @4inches4u Uhh mid summer so 25*C or so?

  • @CATPWRD I love my 385s. Dislike the UC shake on them but you simply can't beat them for moving dirt.

  • I hope Matty is either the guy who writes your checks or your girls father, because this site is for people who enjoy the big iron

    soooo, eff off

  • I don't mind if people think they can do it better than me. I know how our company works, why we do things a certain why, what the job conditions were like etc etc. It's hard to tell why certain things are happening just from a 3 min video so it's all good.

  • Either that or it's unripped rock and I'm ramming an 8 yard bucket through with huge fat general purpose teeth on it?

  • i guess some changes should be made for max efficiency....tell yor boss man................

  • We get a decent price for unripped rock so we really don't loose anyting...

  • does that not have wear plates

  • Yes the plates run side to side on the bottom. The 850D ones are more visible as they run front to back.

  • oh ok

  • yes he lives at country village and runs contours zaxis 650 long reach

  • by the way my son in law Mike runs long reach for Contour he hangs with the Burnco crew alot digging big ass hoels to

  • I build logging roads at Gold River on Vancouver Island run hoe, cat and I drill and blast going on 33 years now also worked for Roadway in Calgary for a bit to flat for me a 65% side hill is just right. well keep smileing.

  • I hear you on that! They always give me funny looks when I'm hanging off a slope somewhere still loading trucks. Is your son in law in Calgary as well?

  • baleing dirt boreing you sould try west coat road building

  • In case you missed the title, we are building a pond.

  • sorry digging a hole baleing dirt

  • LOL yeah, it is a bit of a huge ass hole isn't it? We do alot of subdivisions and a couple road jobs too. I'm +/- 8-10 centimeters once I get set on grade, the grader just comes along and blades out the tooth marks.

  • oh cool i have seen your company before i just thought you were up north of alberta

  • oh ok thanx so where aboust is your work based ???

  • All of my videos have been taken in Calgary.

  • so is your main excavator that 385C ???

  • I usually run a 385C yes, however I don't run this ME anymore I have a L Powerstripe now.

  • Things are a bit slow right now but if you're able to work in Canada and are somewhat local just send me a message and I'll give you a fax number.

  • it looks like the guy in the minin truck driver was shitin bricks when you swung over every time

  • i notice in many of your vids that you look bored, how can that great job get borin.

  • Hey cool video....

Why are you loading a scraper though?

    Joe

  • 385's don't make money sitting waiting for trucks *wink* we get paid by how much dirt we move and the 3 trucks could keep up so I got 2 scrapers to top load (they were sitting anyways) and later on 3 more trucks from another site.

  • I've been with this company for 2 1/1 years and I've always traveled from home. I worked on two jobsites that we got travel (I think the rule of thumb is anything over half an hour out of the city we get travel). Calgary is 60km across so 80km work area is about the same as you.

And yeah there are a whole wack of construction companies here, the one I work for is the biggest though.

  • No usually we stay around the city outskirts. If we do end up traveling our company pays us for the travel time and if its a long trip pays for a place to stay + food for the week.

Sucks about your leg I hope it's better soon.

  • No offence taken, most people assume I'm much older than I am from the work and machines I run.

We always have something on the go year round, of course some of the less experienced guys get tossed first when things slow down. Depending on the work alot of companies will go all year.

  • I actually just turned 23 in june =p

My friend from the UK just came over and had his pick from 5-6 different companies. Basically you have to put down the cost of airfare, a place to stay and then just phone around and ask for a try out. If you're good you won't have a problem.

  • love the videos,,keep them coming!!!

  • jason:

Great video. Do you ever get to do any building wrecking or demolition with the 385? Would love to see some videos of you doing demo.

  • Sadly no =/ I got to pull out fence posts a couple times, but that's not really the same thing =p

  • good video

  • yup!Continue to make videos and pics!Just love them!

  • Nice Vant!

  • Nice video as always, One of these days you should get one of the truck drivers to shoot the video for/of you, get a different angle. HAHA. How come you don't have your 740's from the previous videos on this job?

  • The jobsite is nice and hard and the pond is all rock so the 740s can be put to use someplace soggy.

  • Nice video man keep them coming.

  • Another great video as usual! Thanks for sharing your awesome job with us!

  • hairs changed lol

great to see you doing vids again.(keep em coming)

why were you loading a scraper was that the only thing that was available or was he unloading specifically?

  • Stalker! Ha yeah I needa go get a haircut soon.

I had 3 769 trucks but they werent keeping up to me. There were a couple 631 scrapers sitting at another site not being used so I arranged to have them come over and pretend to be rock trucks.

Personally I think the '31s are better. You have to be a little more careful loading them as you can't touch them at all (ejector + hydraulics are right there, and its a tight fit) but they dont need a dozer, travel faster and they can get through more.

  • yeah i noticed you were really cautious when putting the bucket in, good job though.

i noticed when you were digging there was a lot of dust when you were scraping bigger rocks underneath. i'd imagine it is a bit of an arse lifting dirt when you have to maneouvre around them,(or maybe by accident picking them up when they werent suppose to be in then dropping them aside, must get annoying)

well great vid again, i just hope you can be more frequent with your vids, please keep em comin.

    Ryan

  • Yeah with an 8 yard bucket you can have some pretty big rocks hiding in the middle of your scoop and not notice. For the most part I can "feel" what is going into the bucket (big rocks the bucket will bog right down and then you feel the rock "pop" up) so I can pick out the bigger stuff. If the scraper is in just the right position I can usually manage to pick the rock back out of the bowl after it's been dumped in.

I'll try to get more videos I have to borrow a camera to take them right now.

  • wow, i'd say your quite an operator (it does show) so being cautious loading scrapers but then if there are big rocks in then you can pluck them back out that takes some precision with such a big machine, credit to you

i understand if you are borrowing a camera but everyone who has subbed loves your vids.
