How inbred was he well his father Philip IV of Spain married his niece Mariana of Austria thus making Empress Maria Anna simultaneously his grandmother and aunt. He was descended from his great great great grandparents Joanna the Mad and Philip the Handsome through three of their children in fact whereas someone whose ascendants (i.e. direct ancestors) were all unrelated to their spouses would have 32 great great great grandparents, Charles only had 14. No wonder he was called Carlos the Hexed
@LordMoriya He was - because the Spanish Habsburgs followed a massive inter-marriage policy (for example, Felipe II married a Portuguese princess, like his father, Charles V; Portuguese kings married always with either Austrian or Spanish princes and princesses) and Felipe II's son and grandson married inside the Habsburg family... too much inbred, in my opinion.
A very interesting and evocative piece of work. The strange, agonised story of Carlos the Bewitched is one of the saddest and most haunting tales of any European monarch.

Wasn't Charles II of Spain retarded?
And I mean that in the literal way--I'm not saying the childish insult.

His story is extraordinary and mysterious, and this video is amazingly beautiful.

Powerful song for a sorry figure. One must pity Charles II of Spain, for however sickly he was, he ruled an incredible 25 years.

I think that their life is the most interesting and mysterious stories of all the kings, not only in Spain. Very little known.
