  • you're amazing dude.

  • @Toolmybass

Hahaha wish i had your set up, in all how much did it cost you?

  • at 3:47 are you using delay? can't get the timing down, main;y because it's a beginner bass. >.>

  • @13YZRacer

Funny you ask that...the delay on that part is supposed to be on...but i forgot to do it during the tapping. :-(

  • is he using his thumb to hit the top string?

  • Epic cover is epic!

  • By the way, how much did this cost, just visited the site and states prices are from £3500 :( There go my hopes and dreams...

  • @Arachnidius

they are expensive and worth every penny!

  • Is that like a really small wal bass or is he just really big??

  • @jussipants lol

dont know what "really big" is. All Wal MKII's have the same size body. My hands make most basses look small....but i am only 6'2" 220lbs

  • sounds great bro , it'd be great if you submit the tablature :)

  • i love the sound of that basses

  • Damn, bro! That ish was perfect. Thumbs up.

  • Hands down !!! Awesome job !!

  • Thanks for the video, this is a great help in figuring out how to play it...probably wasn't smart to pick this of all songs as my entry into learning how to play bass (...or guitar in general) but if I get this down i'll pretty much have an understanding of a lot of different techniques! :D I HOPE >.>

  • So i may be a couple years late here seeing as how you did this in 09 but good god man i may have just creamed myself to that performance. Rock on.

  • Haha I actually misclicked & got sent to a different vid than what I was looking for, but ended up watching the whole thing. awesome job man.

  • what pedals do you use for this song?amazing btw!

  • where can i buy one of these

  • @Merick365 Google Wal Basses (its the first one that pops up)

  • I usually don't curse on the net but...HOLY SHIT!

this guy did everything right, i don't even want to pick up my bass anymore!

  • Wohooooooow, that was eye-opening.

  • Hey im having trouble learning the part from 2:22 to 2:41 do you think you can send me tabs or maybe make a video ?

  • @KillJoyHot Sorry no tab....but by looking at my fret markers you have a live tab right in front of your eyes. Should be easy to pick up from vid!

  • @Toolmybass well thanks anyway :)

  • @KillJoyHot Check out at site called songnsterr.

  • What setting do you have your Bass Whammy on and what Distortion Pedal are you using? Whatever they are, they sound perfect!

  • @puppetmetal Whammy= 5th/up Oct/up with pedal rocked forward. ProCo Rat distortion

  • Gracias, excelente version.

  • Dude... i would kill for that bass...

  • Nice Bass

  • Nice work, monstrous tone. You have unusual technique but your muting and tremolo picking sound cleaner than Justin's on the album LOL.

  • @lordironspatula Hey tnx

  • this is the first bass video I have watched for a tool song and its very good but it seems so repetitive.. are songs usually like this for bass?

  • did u use any pedals??? btw ur awesome

  • @grungefano2513 yes...see my pedal board vid!

  • That is an awesome bass. I'm playing it vicariously through you.

  • for all who dont want to give tabs its because they afraid that someone will do it better fuckers!!!!!

  • levys strap?

  • @Toolmybass link for strap, pls. love your wal, fuckin great sound.

  • did you order that wal strait from england or did you buy it from someone? also i think you should put in the video description what the different effects you are running because i would love to get some justin tone going with my bass

  • @redjrl Its from Oregon via England. As far as effects, do a YouTube search for "Tool Dunlop Bass" and they show you all of effects that JC uses and the settings!

My new board is almost finished and will post a vid soon

  • tool is my favorite band and nice bass playing

  • Oh gods, I would kill for sound like your...

  • 100%

  • fuck! thats a nice bass

  • Fuck man, you're a beast. I've recently been getting intruiged by Tool and their style. Justin is an amazing bassist and whenever I try to learn a song, I always watch your cover to make sure I'm doing it right, haha.

    Great job man.

  • @JimOclock tnx dude

  • What mods have you done to the rat?, I have put the lm308 chip in mine, also use a sansamp, but it's real hard to get the growl without the Wal, nearly bought a Mark I, but it needs to be a II huh! Thanks!

  • @basschism Mine is same chip, some clipping thing, bass freq adjustment and something else. Does it need to be a II?...haha...have a listen to my MKI Montage vid and you tell me!

  • @Toolmybass of its has to be a MK II, 24 fret net, and teh shape is so much nicer!, I did play a I a couple of months back, through a tiny little cube amp, was tempted, but not at £3400, it was not in the best shape.

Have seen you MKI montage, and the tone on that is good, but this.....SUBLIME! Also see on your other videos, you have TWO bass whammys, thats just greedy man!

    thanks all the best!

  • @basschism Had 2 Wals too...but i was in a Tool Tribute and it made sense at the time to have a backup....sold one of the whammy's to the guy who bought the Wal!

  • Spot on take fella, nailed it and the tone! While I am waiting for my Wal, what are your settings on the Rat, am guessing a small amount on gain?

  • @basschism I dont use the same Rat as JC...I have a modded Rat II for bass. I do have an early Turbo Rat but it sounds like poo, so im guessing that JC has his modded as well

If you search "tool dunlop" you will find every setting on there but the chorus. There you can see his exact levels on the Rat

  • How much did you pay for the Wal (i heard they ranged from 4000-8000 dollars)

  • @ForgottenToilet Over 5K

  • Great cover. almost no mistakes whatsoever. I know i shouldnt argue with success, but i couldnt help but notice that except for the last few runs, you almost never have your thumb behind the neck. its either hooked over the fretboard or in an awkward looking position under it. keeping you thumb behind the necks helps with holding down the strings and increases your reach. other than that small thing, great technique, great cover. love it :D

  • @Iliketacos091 lol....the factors for my hand position

    Long arms

    Big hands

    Small neck

I even had to order an XL Levy's strap, because the normal one on the longest setting was still too short for me. So because of this i cannot always leave my thumb on the back of the neck. I can when im sitting down but not when standing. At least playing Tool

  • @Toolmybass now that i look at it, your hands are huge. well, you sound great anyway so i suppose where your thumb is doesnt matter that much lol

  • OH nice bro!! Great tone and good to someone actually playing it right. Mean!!

  • this one is totally stuck in my head

  • fucking awesome cover

  • Awesome cover? May I ask what kind of bass u are using and what tuning? Sounds like drop d but I'm not 100%sure

  • @dponce79 he's using Wal mkII and yes, drop d

  • You fucking nailed it! :-D

  • hay can you redo 46 and 2 with the wal

  • By some strange coincidence, Iclicked through a couple of you and your band's videos, and saw you guys from your 3rd, then 4th rehearsal, then an amateur show, and finally a more pro show at a larger venue. I saw you guys progress before my very eyes. Keep up the great work!

  • dude... perfect... :o

  • nice bass man were can i get one like that

  • @dustinplatz1 look for Wal's website online

  • @Toolmybass did you get a Wal just because Justin plays one? aw, how cute :P

  • @piratebri Actually your MOM bought it for me. Said you were too stupid to attend school and used your tuition money to fund my bass.

She says hi, and to clean your room up or you wont get your allowance ;-p

  • you copied this so well... how do you get that distortion anyway? the main one

  • @chrisslipknt444 Only the combination of Wal/Mesa/Pro-Co Rat will give you this sound.

  • dude, that tone! your bass got some growl! excellent playing.

  • So good, nice work, congrats...

  • What pedals are u using to get that meaty grindy sound?

  • This is so amazing, THUMBS UP!

  • 2:42 to 2:48 my favorite part,easy and cool

  • Eargasm! Awesome sound!

  • dude, i just had to say that you have the best cover of this song out of everyone else, you play it just like i do, I thought i was the only one in the world who had it right!

  • @halfMAKOL oh yeah, and what distortion are you using as the main tone, and what pedal do you use at 5:15?

  • @halfMAKOL @5:15 Bass Whammy....some of main grit is from a modded Rat and a couple other pedals....but would NOT sound like this without a Wal no matter what pedals i had.

  • @Toolmybass there's no effect besides the whammy that gives that effect like if you held the right bar on the piano? cuz i thought that was delay or something

  • @halfMAKOL 5:22 to 5:32 there is delay

  • u got 2 wals?

  • @LTLfilms nope..sold one

  • @Toolmybass stupid question but can i trade my Fender aerodyne jazz bass and 600 dollars for the wal

  • wow that sounds fucking awesome

  • Great cover man. The tone was absolutely amazing and you played the song as accurately as could be. Nice bass too.

    I want a Wal :/

  • That needs more work!

  • ...give me your bass :P

  • that's awesome. I wish i had a wal. one day..

  • The first time I heard this song it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. It still does. There is something about the sound of a Wal at full song that projects such power. You nailed the cover dude. Nice work... nice bass.

  • A great bass in the right hands. Felicitazioni.

  • where did you get your mkll?

  • @katanaboy16 EvilBay via Oregon

  • nice job, nailed it.

  • Fuck dude, that was tight...& did I notice you thumb muting the low D? Nice technique

  • @falcon45ca The thumb muting is not intentional..lol I wish my arms were a hair shorter and my hands a bit smaller. With the bass kinda sitting low, to have my thumb resting on the back of the neck all the time is a pain unless its high up.

  • Awesome!

Didnt know the first 30 seconds and the part at 3:55 + were from a bass. Always thought that was a guitar.

  • hasiiiiiiiii no VAAAAAAAAAAA....!!!!!!!!!! pendejo..!!

  • only video of yours ive watch but its defnetly enough to get me to subscribe

nailed the tone by the way

  • The tone is spot on man....great job!

  • what kind of bass is that...i'm a noob when it comes to basses. i know my guitars but not a lot of basses.

  • @Jimihendrix6699 Wal MKII

  • This is really good sir, and I really like the sound!

    Please never stop playing.

  • fuckin right bud!! sounds wicked!

  • MOTHER FUCK !!!!!

  • NIce tone

  • Nice cover. Its kind of awkward seeing your thumb not supporting neck when playing high up on the neck. Not trying to be mean or anything, Good stuff nonetheless!

  • At 4:19, instead of playing so low on the fret board, you can just play the same thing on 2nd string at 5, 5, 3, 7, and 8. Great cover.

  • @SHUTupNrocK8 It is actually played this way live. Also if you watch what happens at the latter parts of that and where i have to be on the fretboard it makes more sense playing it this way

  • your bass sounds nice and beefy realy mean sounding i love it + awsome cover man seriously amazing

  • where do u get your tabs from bro???????

  • @15Tasty in my head

  • @15Tasty its prety friggin hard to get tool tabs considering there level of expierience and the difficulty of there songs man.

  • @15Tasty If you want the best Tool tabs, you can find them over at Tooltabs they pretty much have very close to perfect tabs there. toolmybass posts on the forum there too.

  • @15Tasty tooltabs.net

  • Do you use a sansamp bass driver like Justin??

  • @alembicbassguy Full gear on profile...so no i do not use one of those

  • @Toolmybass

    Neither does justin...

  • @alembicbassguy Justin does not use a Sansamp Bass Driver DI, no matter where you read it.

  • ohhh..man youre fucking good man keep it up ...you rock

  • What are your EQ settings on the amp and bass when playing this song? Are they the same on every Tool song?

  • @bagelman10 My eq settings change all the time...im always adj and never satisfied...

  • Omg this rules so hard!

  • in the verse section, you are playing a 15 on the low D then a 15 on the A right after it, correct?

  • @A216shadoW yes

  • @Toolmybass Awesome job. Your bass tone is EXACTLY like Justin's! I do have a question: Other than a Wal, are there any basses you have or normally use? If so, is it possible to gain that exact or similar tone with the current equipment used in this video on another bass? Thanks man!

  • i'm sorry but i have to steal your bass, bro

  • Ah! im sure you have had all the compliments under the sun... but i must say thanks to this recording of you playing... i have now figured out how to it.. What the hell time signitures are in this song! it has baffled me for sometime...

    Great vid GREAT song!.

    x

    M

  • @MissMog TNX!

  • Perfect....!!!

  • 5:58 only but then all perfect, good job boy

  • dude you did an amazing job keep it up

  • You bass is... AWESOME!

  • FUCKING AWESOME DUDE!!!!!!!

  • Fat tone! You make it sing.

  • Incredible. Great cover. :)

  • i just played your video while playing the instrumental bass part on youtube on another tab i got it so they were playing at the same time sounded like one guitar.... nice job man and i know your very proud of this one

  • tnx!

  • Dude what tuning u use?

  • Haven't seen a single video where people do the "part vampire part warrior" part well. Always sloppy.

    Cheers.

  • Dude that was so sick. Wow.

  • You. Are. BEAST.

  • The tone ..the tone...is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

  • i like that colour on the Wal better than justins :P

  • Holy fuck.

  • pure insanity... dude you rule!

  • very cool

can you tell me where you get the tabs

  • no tabs. In my head, lol

  • theres a thing called google.

  • holy shit dude! AMAZING

You're Justin, aren't you? Show your face! AHAHHA

  • This tone ROCKS donkey balls!

  • I think this tone is the only one on earth I'd trade my good old precision bass in for. Holy crap. That overdrive is so sweet.

  • @uhohoverflow

That's exactly what I did. I had a nice vintage P, and got the bug for a Wal, so the P went bye bye.

  • dat tone

  • what distortion/overdrive u running for the tool tone?

  • proco rat modded for bass

  • What kind of bass are you playing?

  • a wal bass, theyre really amazing, but really expensive

  • So he plays with both the whammy and one octave up?

  • Whammy setting is 5th^(up) Oct^(up) rocked frwd on whammy pedal. Hope this helps

  • Aha! That explains it all.. Makes hella loads of sense.. Originally talking as a guitarist, so obviously got the wh4, not the bass version (hella hard to get ones hands on those, lucky guy :) >Arranging a cover for a concert, and as i am a perfectionist i want to get as much info as possible. Thanks mate .)

  • I knew i was playing it wrong! Thanks dude now i can learn it the real way, nice fucking wal too, holy shit!

  • not to sound like a pain in the ass but what are your eq settings at i love tool but i cant cant get that sound that i want...i have a 10 band equalizer for my rig btw.

  • how do you get justin's tone, i can't find it exactly?

  • amazing played and amazing sound

  • brillant!

    do you have the tab?

  • look down 3 comments

  • i LOVE the cover of this song. You did amazing!! Plus the bass is one of my top favorite instruments :D i play guitar myself but have always wanted a bass.

  • did you learn it by ear? Because, if you learned it by tab you have to send me them. Great job.

  • sorry no tab.....I have the isolated bass track and learned what notes i was missing from my old vicarious vid!
