Hello! Did Zabu try to lick her stitches? I'm asking because when my cat was spayed, I had to make her wear an Elizabethan collar because she was trying to pull out the stitches. So I was wondering if it's the same with big cats... I know, totally random question!
@BigCatRescue Thank you for answering my random questions both here and on Facebook :) P.S. I love you guys so much I became a sustaining donor (for the smallest amount, but still...). @girlytubegirl I'm not actually sure if this can actually be done for big cats...probably not, spaying Zabu is a one time deal no complications no more procedures in the future etc... much better to do it this way :)

We don't breed at Big Cat Rescue, why breed to have more cats living in cages?? Especially white tigers that are usually inbred and suffer from health problems because of this, thanks for watching :)

I think that the law should be changed as well, absolutely. It's not right for these magnificent creatures to go through this kind of stuff. But it is necessary. I love cats. All species and all breeds of cats, and I think what you guys did there was very noble and respectable.
Even though you guys are probably doing a good thing and you treat the cats with respect, I still feel sad to see such amazing animals caged up, and it makes me cringe to see you operate on them! (And no it's not that I am woosy at the sight of blood or doctors cutting through skin. I've watched human surgeries before) :-)
You're right we wish a place like BCR didn't have to exist but unfortunately the laws regarding private ownership of these cats are not strict enough. Our ultimate goal is to get these laws changed so no more cats have to suffer!
The FACT is anywhere you can hold or have your photo taken with cubs is a place breeding tigers/lions etc.. for profit. What happens to these cubs when they get to big and become too expensive to feed??? True sanctuaries do not breed, there are far too many big cats out there that need a place to live :)
Zabu the white tiger and liger have my most sympathy among all the big cats at Big CAt Rescue. For one thing the reason why they exist because we want them to. Human created them. Second, either white tiger or liger probably won't live much longer due to their genre complication. I can feel that they are very lonely. For Zabu, perfhaps her tiger peers won't like to hang out with her due to her colour; For the liger, she also won't be accepted by either lions or tigers.
Don't feel too sorry for Zabu. She lives happily with her lion boyfriend in a huge enclosure at BCR. The two keep each other company. Much better conditions than most captive tigers. (;^)
haha i think you are right. Very few cats can get along together so well like Cameron and Zabu. They must have been living together for a whole life. If in the wild, these two would be fighting to the death. Sometimes being captivited isn't too bad for the cats. Because we human don't teach them to hunt and kill other live animals, so it'd be less likely we'll see tiger kill tiger or lion kill lion these cruel things happen in nature.
It's especially good that they spay a white (inbred) tiger if they were planning on keeping her with a male lion( though i assumed he was fixed already anyways). The only reason I would argue with a sanctuary for spaying or nuetering an animal is if it was a member of an endangered species. I dont think they would be fixing florida panthers and snow leopards and clouded leopards though i doubt those cats end up in many sanctuaries
It´s great that BCR spays and neuters their animals. Sanctuaries should never breed or buy when there are so many animals waiting to be placed in a sanctuary.
Nice job! It´s even better because Zabu is a white tiger. Now, no matter what ever happens, Zabu will never be able to be exploited or part of a scheme to get more white tigers, which often suffer from horrible deformities and birth defects.
how come the doctor was in scrubs but nobody else in the room was? doctor with face mask then that guy walks up beside the table with nothing lol kind of makes the doctors attempts to be clean kind of useless?
We believe the roadside zoo were trying to breed for a liger which is the result of a male lion and female tiger breeding. Ligers are known for the enormous size which people will pay to take a look at, they also suffer from health problems, because like you said these 2 cat species were never meant to breed.
i see adverts and stuff about ppl complaining bout their not being enough tigers in the world so duh ..... why da fuk r u stopping it from breedding hello are u dumb....
We know there aren't enough tigers left in the wild, but breeding tigers just for the sake of it is cruel for the animals to spend their lives in a cage. Breeding cats to be released back into the wild is a waste of time when we can't protect enough habitat for existing tigers already out there and we can't protect the tigers form being killed for their parts :)
You guys are so affectionate to your animals! It's beautiful! I wish I could interact with big cat's like you do. But my learning curve keeps me from learning as much as is needed -_-#
But doesn't mean I can't do good for these cats with my photography!
Hi, we spayed Zabu as we never want to breed any of our cats to spend their lives stuck in cages. Especially white tigers many of whom have health problems from inbreeding, we also wanted Zabu to have a better quality of life in captivity.
So you keep all your white tigers in the same pen? Males+Females? I can understand if you have lack of space, but I don't agree with taking away a wild animals ability to reproduce :/ Especially if there is a chance for rehabilitation and release.
No, we kept her in our quarantine cage beside the hospital and kept a close eye on her and we used a protective collar so she couldn't lick at her wound.
Every time Zabu would come into heat , Cameron the male lion would become very aggressive and protective over her, which isn't fun for the keepers, Zabu or Cameron. So we decided to spay Zabu to calm everybody donw and give them a more stress free life in captivity.

we kept cameron in the separate area joined to their 2 acre enclosure, when zabu was brought back form our quarantine cage they remained in separate enclosures next to each other for a couple of weeks, when we let them in together they were fine and very happy to see each other again!
That is our Operations Director Scott Lope, he has a good relationship with Zabu and Cameron, we also condition our cats by feeding them every night in the smaller section of their cage called a "lock-out" so for them it is a good, happy place and is normally their favourite time of day. So that's how Scott was able to get Zabu into the transport cage quick and easy without any stress on Zabu.
Thank you for posting this! It gives me a good taste of what I will experience during the surgeries that I do when I become a vet. Thanks BCR for your incredible work!
Zabu is amazing. When you say there are lots of unwanted big cats in the US, do you mean people breed them as pets? She is so trusting with you and you're doing a great job - but its so sadening that she has to be there at-all and is not in the wild instead, because of humans who did not respect them for the magnificent, powerful animals they are.
Unwanted cats come from 2 places - zoos and exotic pet trade. So yes, while some of these cats are bred as "pets" (they will likely be chained or kept in a small cage to be gawked at for the rest of their lives) many are created by zoos that use baby animals to draw in crowds. The issue is that zoos rarely have the room to support additional adults so they are sold. Also when you're dealing with white tigers, if the tigers born aren't 'good' enough, they also end up in trade.
CapnQuack, you are quite correct. As long as the public will pay more to see baby animals places will continue to breed for babies. You are right often the adults are sold to make room for the babies. Sadly it often means being sold into private hands. When you see baby animals in a zoo, GO to the administration & ask WHERE the adults are/went? If you do not get an answer then contact the AZA and request the answer. Zoos should be held accountable publicly about where their animals go.
I am shocked reading this that Zoos sell their animals. They could trade them with other zoos but not sell to private hands. These animals are endangered in the wild. When will humans respect animal rights. At least in the US these big cats have BCR. In Aust. you can not own these cats privately that i know of.
We agree. Everyone on the planet needs to work toward goals of saving wilderness habitats in order to save these great creatures in the wild where they belong. Raising awareness is a beginning and we all can help do that.
1 Typical cat do everythin bar what you want them to (ill sniff the cage, i'll rub the cage, i'll go half way in) Can anyone tell me where white tigers are found?
The first 1 was found in India and brought to US however today they are only found in captivity i'm afraid, please look online at bigcatrescue, it will open your eyes (unfortunately)
It's kind of funny when they're trying to get the tiger in the cage. It's such a typical cat, doing all it can to NOT do what you want it to. Sniffing around, rubbing on the bars, only standing half-way in...and I say this as a major cat lover. Such a beautiful animal, though. Thanks for this video.
This may seem like a dumb question, but how do you get a white tiger? Did it get crossed with a lion or what? The reason i say lion is because, you put her in the same cage as a lion, shouldn't the tiger be with tigers?
Good question..You can go to our page here on you tube and watch 'white tigers..facts vs fiction.' These two animals grew up together and that is why they live as lion and tiger.
That was amazing! I am in training to become a zoo keeper, and next year I'll be going to uni for a vet course, and that assured me that the next seven years will not be wasted!
There are really no true Bengal Tigers here in the US. (listed is only one female) so every "Bengal" tiger you see does have some Amur/ Siberian bloodlines in it. And they do breed them with the amur for the bigger size.
In the few species of tigers left (white is NOT one of them) there are many low numbers. But breeding them in captivity doesn't help that as no tiger has ever been released into the wild. We have to save the land they live on. And white tigers are man made and made to briong in money and not something you would find in the wild.
I applaud BCR for everything they do to bring awareness of the plight of captive exotic pets. I only wish that people would understand the reason why Zabu had to be spayed, and apply this knowledge to domestic pets. Every year, milions of domestic animals are born and discarded because their owners don't want to spend the money to spay and and neuter their pets. It costs a lot less than it did to spay Zabu, for the same reason. To prevent over-breeding!
It saddens me to see animals exploited by humans. It gives me hope to see people make sacrifices in their lives to tend such animals. I hope all the cats at BCR live a comfortable life, far away from the ravages of the beast called man.
Well, my hat's off to you guys at BigCatRescue, I support any positive action towards the health of animals, especially those who are unhealthy because of humans....cheers to all of you :)
BigCatRescue I admire your efforts and your work on educating the public! It is clear that the public has no idea. Personally I do. I have held a few white tiger babies as they died. I have shed many tears. Keep up the good work!!!!!! There is another tiger called, if I remember correctly, the Golden Tabby?... it too is born with many defects. I have a picture of me with one of the young ones I bottle raised. The sister didn't make it. :( She only lived to be 4 months old.
IDIOT thats all i have to say red hair is a result of genes a white tiger is the result of inbreeding like mother to son or father to daughter or brother to sister many times a white tiger has to live with terrible consequences like zabu is cross-eyed has a cut of lip and has brown stripes not black like a "Good" white tiger I've been to the big cat rescue I have personaly seen her do your research next time bluzfairy then reply to me
It is very serious to knock out a big cat, and at times very risky and we do our best to make sure that everything is as safe as it can be. Thank you.
The White Tiger is NOT a separate species of Tiger. Dr. Ron Tilson, Manager of the Tiger Species Survival Plan, "The white tiger controversy among zoos is a small part ethics and a large part economics. The tiger SSP has condemned breeding white tigers because of their mixed ancestry, most have been hybridized with other subspecies and are of unknown lineage, and because they serve no conservation purpose." & Reports by DVM, PHD Daniel C. Laughlin, further this statement.
Whoaa...inbreeding? I never knew that, I seriously thought white tigers are a really rare, unique, and endangered specie of Tiger. I hope Zabu is healthy... inbreeding usually create lots of problems. I am so glad there are people like you guys helping out these animals!:D
..."fixed"? i am not sure but does it mean she won't be able to have babies anymore? If tat's the case, why is this operation necessary? I mean, isn't it better if white tigers reproduce? I hear they are delicing in numbers...
Listen Kiwi8 you might not understand but I've been to this big cat rescue and seen Zabu she's in with the lion in the video she was raised with him and what if she bred with him if she did she would create white ligers a cross between a tiger in a lion isn't inbreeding enough to get a white tiger whoever stated inbreeding shame on them but breeding a deformed white tiger to a lion? Trust me their doing the right thing
What a brave girl! YAY, for Zabu!!

Also when you're dealing with white tigers, if the tigers born aren't 'good' enough, they also end up in trade.
capnquack 3 years ago

20PhantoM07 4 years ago

what a gorgeous animal...

The reason i say lion is because, you put her in the same cage as a lion, shouldn't the tiger be with tigers?
officeprime 4 years ago
Good question..You can go to our page here on you tube and watch 'white tigers..facts vs fiction.' These two animals grew up together and that is why they live as lion and tiger.

i have a question went to a magic show and that white tiger was huge do they breed them with siberain cats
wushustuntman 4 years ago
There are really no true Bengal Tigers here in the US. (listed is only one female) so every "Bengal" tiger you see does have some Amur/ Siberian bloodlines in it. And they do breed them with the amur for the bigger size.

Why did they spay her?! Arent these beautiful white tigers endangered?
JasnoGT 4 years ago

To prevent over-breeding!
true2tigers 4 years ago 5
how much do those cost.
usnavysss 4 years ago
It saddens me to see animals exploited by humans. It gives me hope to see people make sacrifices in their lives to tend such animals. I hope all the cats at BCR live a comfortable life, far away from the ravages of the beast called man.

Aren't cats supposed to be put into one of those cone-collars? For shame not putting a monster one on a tiger! ;)

I am so glad there are people like you guys helping out these animals!:D
kiwi8 5 years ago 2
..."fixed"? i am not sure but does it mean she won't be able to have babies anymore? If tat's the case, why is this operation necessary? I mean, isn't it better if white tigers reproduce? I hear they are delicing in numbers...
kiwi8 5 years ago
Listen Kiwi8 you might not understand but I've been to this big cat rescue and seen Zabu she's in with the lion in the video she was raised with him and what if she bred with him if she did she would create white ligers a cross between a tiger in a lion isn't inbreeding enough to get a white tiger whoever stated inbreeding shame on them but breeding a deformed white tiger to a lion? Trust me their doing the right thing
