@EXPLORINGYouinHD The parts needed for this mod (the DRZ400 3x3) can be purchased individually from a dealer or from ThumperTalk by purchasing either a DynoJet or JD jet kit for a DRZ400.
Just wanted to say that this is a great mod that applies to any DRZ400 that has a CV carb (later E, an all S and SM models). I did it and it really makes the bike run smoother as faster. It also the first motor mod that you should do, even before changing the muffler or head pipe. As those mods require different jetting anyways.
some one correct me if im wrong but that whole does not look like it is a 3x3 hole cut by a 1.5" hole saw to me it looks like 2x3 which equals 6. please some one explain to me where the 3rd drill hole is because to me it looks like he has only drilled 2.
@transoprtcontrols You could always get a bigger fuel tank. It will affect your gas mileage, since it is essentially putting more of the air/fuel mixture into the motor. However, your mileage should still be around 50 with a 3x3 mod and rejet.
@7h3647h32in6 Keeping under 60mph on a cruise I get 70mpg with 3x3 mod, jetting and exhaust. You should get much more than 50... these bikes are awesome on fuel. I get 50 thrashing it.

@SmR400 hole should be 3x3 to use the jets specified. Different hole different jets. DO NOT CUT THE HOLE WITHOUT CHANGING THE JETS!! If you do the bike will not run right. Go to thumpertalk fot more info on the right jets for you.
is there any use to cutting the hole, but not doing anything with the jets? I really don't want to mess with jets - but cutting a hole seems pretty simple.
I don't want to pay for the jet kit, any chance you could tell me what needle you switched too? Thanks in advance for the info and the top notch vid...ride safe!!
@epicstove you can just buy the jets that are in the kit and raise the needle to the higest position, the main jet is £3 of a dealer or of a auction site (like $5 or sumthing) leave the pilot as it is and just go up main jet size. As you are using a filter and the same pilot jet you can just leave the mixture screw alone with its protective plug.
if you have a performance filter you go up to a bigger jet.
how about just removing the airbox and putting on a pod fiilter on the carb, retune? and by the way tuning a carb is bike specific, its a not generic/ or the optimum setting for everyone.
also u can just put a good flatslide in the lame cv carbs' place and slap on a pod filter and again, retune
Yes, you are correct, but this following the 3x3 mod on a Suzuki DRZ400 as described on Thumpertalk. Go to the web site to get the correct jetting for you altitude.
All I did was mark the hole I wanted to cut, heat the top of the airbox up with my sisters hair dryer and then just cut it with a sharp knife, cuts through the warm airbox like butter and it looks perfect with no mess.
So now I find that my new-2-me klx has been jetted when they did the FMF. I want to do the fmf powerbomb to lengthen the exhaust pulse. Think more jetting will be needed? I should do the 3x3 at the same time and start from scratch on the jetting I think would be best...
You can use the stock screw but it is hard to adjust. You may run real rich at an idle if you skip this step. I would get it, I adjust for cold and hot (seasons) since I ride year round.
3 turns is just a starting point, you back it down as far as you can with out affecting the idle. Mine is now at 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 turns out. Since you changed the Pilot jet you need to change the fule mixture to tune it right. Go to thumpertalk to get more info.
yea i understand what you are saying because i drilled it out and had it set at 2 and a half and it was way lean. i believe i have it at 3 and a half maybe 4 turns out now it it runs much better.
Dont think so I have made my own power pipes for XR400 and the only thing I had to do to get it to run right was ajust the fuel mixture screw out about 2 turns MAX and I got atleast 25% increase in power at the back wheel, as my bike would not lift easy in 4 with a 13tooth sproket and standard exhuast, but with my power pipe I could lift it in 5th with a 15 tooth sprocket on front, I even had a Honda dealer interested in my powerpipes, but I was too lazy to do anything about it then. LOL Not now
Thanks for the awesome vid guys. My mod turned out great. I have a stock header and a Leo Vince X3 Can/ Mid section Uncorked, so I used a 150 main and 25 pilot, needle on 3rd position, fuel mixture screw 2.5 turns out. Ripps like a champ. Gave me a bit more bottom and a lot on the top end. MEGA THUMBS UP GUYS!!!
The Dyno kit only came with main jets, and a needle, had to buy the pilot jet separately. The bike runs awesome. shitload more power than what it had. I know for a fact that 150 is too high of a main jet for my carb, the float bowl will tend to get flooded if i cruise at a constant 30 or 40, but when im cruising the freeway at 80 its all good. All it takes is a couple good cracks of the throttle to flush it out when it floods like that tho. Other than that the bikes legit. best mod ever for drz.
Hi!Good movie!I have a question:Keihin fcr 39 with 3x3 mod + Yoshimura RS3 exhaust and i have to rejet it.I only have to change the pilot jet and main jet?thanks
How big do you measure the hole out he goes now measure it out i know that saw circle I 2 inches but where do you drive the second and 3rd hole dont know, he has a wood piece but he never says how long it is to use it. I guess i will eye ball it.
You gain 2 to 3 HP and you notice it right from the first ride. If I got a new bike this would be the first thing I would do to it. I did add a header later but it was no gain compaired to the 3x3 mod.
really no gain fromt the header? i live in northern california and do allot of hunting and fishing in national park, BLM.... and i dont want to disturb nature and or people when i ride in the parks, so this is good info for me ... spending 200+ on a header for what?? NOISE!?!?!? LOL LMAO
ihave a 2009 dont know either but i am gong to do this, although i can see if you mess up the order of those carb parts and dont know how to do it you could fuck the whole thing up, and that drilling too he does it so easy dont be tricked this guy is a pro its much harder then that. Although it good to do it on your own if you fuck the whole thing up permanently you tried and trying is what counts here.
what a great how-to video. i cant stand the other ones that seem to skip severall steps cause they assume you should know what to do. simply a terrific how to video.
Hello! Just a question, this mod is applicable to the new DRZ400S 2009 ? or this issue was resolved from the factory on the new models ? can't found the size of airbox in later models to see if now it is bigger.... thank you!
dude you are effing amazing, i was wondering how i was about to try to do this without much mechanical experience, this was so helpful, thanks a million
Great video, just done the 3by3 hole, but got origanal jets, and a rase can just put on, will the jets make it go better, cos now it's not runing right, cheers for the video again
YES, Cover the hole back up with duct tape to about the original size until you get the correct jets and jet kit. You are now running lean and could do some engine damage.
Excellent video! This is probably the most informative video I've seen on here. I don't own a DR-Z400, but I do own an XT 225. I had to do the same thing with the plug covering the fuel mixture screw on my bike. 3 turns out is what I'm at, and it works magnificently.
If you go to the web site to get the proper jets for your altidude and other mods you already have should be ok. Go to the forum and select the suzuki drz400 and search 3x3 mod you should find all the info you need. It is all free.
Just did it. I tried without removing the carb, but it became apparent that with the float bowl screws being so tight you have to pull it out. I did not need to unhinge the frame, just release the throttle cables and loosen the gaskets. It will come out with a little convincing.
The jet kit may be different but the procedure is the same.

I ride mine primarily for gas mileage--does anyone know how this affects gas mileage? I don't do much offroading with it--got an Enduro RMX250 for that--but is that the primary reason for this mod?
It will lower your gas mileage simply because it will have much more power and it is fun. You will find youself riding wheelies all over. I get 50 to 55 mpg depending on how hard I ride.
Just so you know there as about 20 minutes of getting the carb out an in, that I edited out. It may take you that long as well, so don't get too frustrated.

It will run lean if you just make the airbox hole larger. Get a jet kit(jd is considered the best) and then remove tape.
jbwiden 3 years ago
I meant to say cover the hole back to original size with tape and when jetting completed remove tape
jbwiden 3 years ago
YES, Cover the hole back up with duct tape to about the original size until you get the correct jets and jet kit. You are now running lean and could do some engine damage.
rbrtplly 3 years ago
The jet kit makes a huge difference.
Be careful - until you re-jet your carb you are running super lean after the 3x3 - your bike will run much hotter.
The bikes already run lean when stock to pass EPA reqts; 3x3 w/o re-jetting makes them even worse.

I ride mine primarily for gas mileage--does anyone know how this affects gas mileage? I don't do much offroading with it--got an Enduro RMX250 for that--but is that the primary reason for this mod?
Chthon128 3 years ago
It will lower your gas mileage simply because it will have much more power and it is fun. You will find youself riding wheelies all over. I get 50 to 55 mpg depending on how hard I ride.

Thanks for that info, robert!
Looks interesting, but my RMX pulls wheelies already like a bucking bronco! I think I'll keep my 70 mpg!
Thanks again!! :)

I'll give it a try now that you've made it look so easy.. thank

You will not regret it.
Just so you know there as about 20 minutes of getting the carb out an in, that I edited out. It may take you that long as well, so don't get too frustrated.

And can you notice a power difference?
Turppa21 4 years ago
YES, It is a big differance. The best $85 you can spend on a DRZ400s. You can make the hole a simple 3x3 hole but I wanted to make mine look nice.
rbrtplly 4 years ago
it looks like a lot of finicky work. How much HP do you gain?
Turppa21 4 years ago
You gain about 2 to 3 HP about 8% gain, you feel it!
rbrtplly 4 years ago
you gain that much just from the 3x3 hole? Or is that with the jets and everything? Can you feel the difference just with the 3x3 hole?
