Wow these plants are beautiful! I have two RES and and Oscar as well, and the three of them DESTROY every plant i've ever tried having. We've invested nearly 100 bucks in all sorts of plants and these mischievous creatures tear them up within one week!
@daniellebr8777 yeah I quickly learned that submerged plants will not last. check out my updates for the oscar/turtle riparium, this tank has changed a lot.
wow thats one healthy oscar. has alot of vibrant colors . what food do you feed them ? i feed mine hikari chichlid gold but his colos havent come out yet. hes only 5 inches tho.
@will20091995 thank you! I have had this tank for a little over 2 years now, it has changed a lot but the turtle is the oldest resident here, I am currently putting in a lot of new plants, so look out for another update in a week or so, in the meantime i recommend that you go to my video labeled "turtle and oscar riparium update 4" Its my best, I hope you like it.
@will20091995 it will depend on your oscars' aggression, usually the more space the less aggressive they are. but even if the turtles are only half the size of the oscar they'd have a hard time really hurting the turtles. I put mine together when they were both the same size and the turtle nipped the oscar's fin once and that was it. The oscar sometimes shoves the smaller turtle with its mouth, sometimes the turtle will try to climb over the oscar when i put my hand over the water to feed them.
no no , i mean can they breath because the water is a lot and high .... they will stay on the surface and get tired then die , will they be able to breath underwater ? :P
@will20091995 oh, yeah they surface up to the water every couple of minutes when awake and maybe every 10 minutes at night when they sleep underwater, although they usually like to sleep close to the surface in the plant roots. they are great swimmers, climbers and as long as they dont get trapped under large slabs of rock, they should be able to get to the surface. the reason why im saying this is because they like to rub their shells on decorations and have actually tipped big rocks before.
How well does this work in a 55 gallon? Would it not be very strained living because RES require 100-120gallons and are native to north America where the tiger oscar requires 45 gallons + and is native to South Amercia :S I just cant get my head around Turtles and Chiclids being happy together. But interesting setup!
@iEnjoyPickels well its been over a year now and they get along just fine, the oscar is king of the tank, yet the big turtle doesnt really give a damn about the oscar and pushes the oscar out of the way if im giving food. the water temp stay around 76 degrees which is fine for both, and I make sure that they both get their own proper diet. Id say this would not work in most cases as most turtles will try to eat any fish however this one has lived with the big comets for over 3 years now.
@SPART4N1171 an adult male RES can live happily in a 40 gallon breeder tank by himself if the water filtration is good (300-500 gallons per hour). a 55 gallon tank is also good. but it is not as wide. the width of the tank is more important. this is all with the assumption that you'll fill the tank to 75% of the way up. the more water the better. with such a setup a canister filter is best, I have found hang on back and internal filters to be a poor choice for turtles, clog up fast.
@tazbarrow it is true only if the turtle is much smaller than the oscar, say less than half the oscar's size. Otherwise they are quite compatible. the oscar bulldozes the turtle sometimes, and the turtle doesn't seem to be afraid of him, pushes him aside during feeding time. when I first put the oscar in the turtle nipped his bottom fin a little. the oscar never injured the turtle. I have had them like this for about half a year and I am very content with them together. I also removed the koi.
Nice set up but I love your tank I had 3 small red ears with 2 wolf fish, the turtles tried to eat them lol and they were big fish. Don't your turtle try to eat your plants?
@Jroget30 the turtle nibbles on the plants that it can reach, sometimes it knocks them down into the water for that reason, the only thing it hasnt eaten was the lucky bamboo that is in there, they also seem to prefer the leaves and dont touch the roots of the plants, which is good. the plants are there really to remove the nitrates from the water.
Hey, nice setup and beautiful oscar. I am getting a red eared slider turtle and was wondering about keeping an oscar with it. Does you turtle and oscar get along, or do they fight?
@PackLeaderAlee thanks, they get along pretty well, the oscar actually picks on the turtle which is not what I was concerned about when I first put them together. He pushes the turtle around. the other fish have been sold in that tank. I'd say that its an ok match for you unless your turtle is in danger of fitting into the oscar's mouth, or if your turtle is twice the size of the oscar. I'd say that I'm pushing it with only 55 gallon tank, more space would be subdue the oscar.
@crazyflea159 thanks, I learned a lot about oscars before I bought him and I can say that diet plays a big role with them. when he was about 1.5 inches I fed him mostly freeze dried bloodworms, then about at 2 inches I introduced him to freeze dried shrimp and hikari cichlid gold pellets(baby size) and then at around 3 inches he was eating the med size pellets, shrimp and some tilapia fillet. he grew like 1 inch a month. now I feed him freeze dried shrimp, mealworms, cichlid gold & fillet. GL!
@ThomasRicher1 it depends what kind... the reptomin floating pellets have around 40% protein, and the ZooMed aquatic turtle food pellets have 35% protein. both are not sufficient as a major part of the diet. although its okay for the oscar to eat it once in a while especially if the turtle food comes with meal worms and shrimp. My oscar sometimes gets to the turtle food before the turtle almost on a daily basis, but he still gets his own high protein diet of shrimp, fish fillet and fish pellets.
@m1ste2tea in addition I think if your turtle was to be eating the oscar's food on a daily basis I'd be more concerned as the turtle cannot have a high protein diet once its past 4-5 inch shell size. they need more vegetables. and generally the turtle food has more vitamins and minerals that are specific to shell growth, plus I usually sprinkle calcium onto the turle's food.
cool setup. i like the way you have the roots managed.
