Omaha Beach should have been left untouched and not ended up as a tourist attraction its the least we could have done to respect the many men who were killed there
Yes, there are still many bunkers along the Normandy Beaches, but these 2 from the film Saving Private Ryan never excist, and I know it I'm going every year to Normandy. Also not all these bunkers are at Omaha Beach you see in the "Now" version of this video...
Yes, real german bunkers are still along the coast by Omaha Beach, I was just there 6 month ago (2010). But also I would say yes some of these are different and some I have seen and photographed.
The trip is quite worthwhile.....nice countryside too and it is nice to see how it has recovered without erasing history. I was also in France in 1944.....
13 august i am going with my dad to Normandy now i got a BIG question! what happend to the two big bunkers on the clifs( 1:30 )i have never seen them acctualy
@Elieeeeboy demolished, or destroyed during the pass of time. I've been to Omaha Beach with my father, you can still find some bunkers here and there, most of the big ones are gone though. You can find the foundations of them though.
@Elieeeeboy Actually to be more specific, at the foundation of one of those big bunkers, there is a memorial there, for the German soldiers that died defending the beach, though my memory is a tad hazey...it was either U.S. Servicemen, or the Germans.
@Elieeeeboy These bunkers has nothing to do with omaha beach, the footage is shot in ireland for the film Saving Private Ryan. These two bunkers never excist!
nomadnametab u are a dumb ass u need to go back to the class room and learn some more i HATE nazis myself but not germany as a hole country by what u said u even haye the germans who tried to kill hitler u have no idea what ur talking about
if only we had started developing the atomic bomb a year or so sooner their asses would have been bombed into submission and this would not have been necessary. they are going to have to do something incredibly noble and courageous to ever redeem their country . i was born a decade after the nazi bastards were beaten and grew up hearing about their barbarism. i don't respect or admire anything about germany. give me a reason to do so.
@george1976ist After some thought, you are absolutely right. America is every bit as bad if not worst than Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan during WWll and Stalinist Russia combined. From now on, I will curse God for allowing me to live in such a cruel and exploitive country. LOL
@george1976ist I disagree with your comparison. It is commical to compare America to Nazi Germany. There were many Germans that were called to service and did what they had to do. I have respect for them, but ,unfortunately, I also feel that they are stained by the evil of the regime that they represented. . Knowing the countless atrocities commited by the Nazis and the millions of innocent people that they murdered,no one who fought for Germany deserves any honor.
It is so strange to see such a peaceful looking beach and knowing that it was on that very beach that one of the most violent battles in human history took place.
D-Day. . . the men who fought and died on Normandy I give my respects to those soldiers. Wishing it never happen, I will honor them even in death. *CptSpaceball*
trying to visualize what it must of been like. We will never know. I got so much respect for what you guys had to of gone through for all of us. Thank You!
@Tucker1Nonly, There was not anything 'built-up' in the movie. Omaha Beach was the most costly landing during D-Day, & ~4,700+ Allied casualties occurred there; there were perhaps 10-11,000 Allied casualties on D-Day. 20,000 casualties were expected.
@Tucker1Nonly, I've seen the real footage, that is what little of it exists. You should read some good military books showing the terrain, German posistions, units, arty., etc. that were at Omaha. You know nothing.
BTW, this video here shows some of those German pdefensive positions & the wide & open beach very well.
@christof139 Actually, the estimated casualties for Omaha beach alone is 2 000. The total numbers of casualties for the Allied D-Day landings, including the US and UK Airborne units, is conservatively 8 443 but is more likely to be over 9 000, of wich around 3 000 may have been fatalities. US Airborne 2 500, US Omaha 2 000, UK Airborne 1 500, CAN Juno 1 200, UK Sword 630, UK Gold 413, US Utah 200. Lest we forget.
now compare it with the crossing of Dnieper (where nazis planned to build an "eastern wall", coz Dnieper is one of the largest rivers on the planet so it's easy to defend it), where casualities from both sides were more than 1 million men
@caporalchef4, No, you quote very old figures. Newer & more accurate statistics show at least 4,700 casualties at Omaha. I'd give you a list of books but you would neither read not buy them. There are over 100 british causalties included at Omaha, & these were landing craft crewmen, etc., naval personnel in the main. There were over 10,000 Allied casualties on D-Day - 20,000 were expected - & the number is continually rising as new records are found.
@caporalchef4, Omaha Beach, D-day, June 6, 1944, by Joseph Balkoski; Omaha Beach, A Flawed Victory, Adrian R. Lewis; D-Day, June 6, 1944: The Climatic Battle of World War II, Stephen E. Ambrose; etc. Balkoski's book has detailed statistics of land, sea, & air units involved at Omaha, & his figure is 4,720 casualties. He lists ~30 RN casualties, but I have seen figures of over 100, & there was a Brit liason officer wounded at Point du Hoc with the Rangers.
@ghillie below....unless your old man was Dr. Who I'm not sure how he fought at Okinawa in the Pacific theatre and then when that ended he fought in Germany... V-Day comes a little bit earlier on my calendar than J-Day
an elderly American got off a plane in paris, after exiting the plane, a french guard asked him for his passport. He calmly said'' Im sorry Mesuir, i didnt bring it, last time i was in france i didnt need no passport'' Then the frenchmen, rudely said'' why thats impossible, france has always required a passport!!'' then the old man said, ''June i think it was, 1944, when i was walking on your beaches, there wasnt a frenchmen in sight to give my passport'' You could hear a pin drop
@GhillieMillitiacod4 I think you have that mixed up because the war in Europe ended first so he probably finished Europe then went to Okinawa to fight. Im not sure how many Army units were in Okinawa.
@GhillieMillitiacod4 That's impossible. The war in Europe, against Germany, VE Day, is 8th of may 1945. The war in the pacific officially ended on september 2nd 1945. Also, No US Marines ever set foot in Europe during WWII, taking only part in the war against Japan. Look up your facts before mailing some random crap on YT. Friendly advice.
I want to thank the brave souls, who on this day 66 years ago took the greatest act of courage to free us from the forces of darkness. Thank you my unknown friends who fought for my freedom. I do not have enough words or tears to express my gratitude.

yeah. it would be a honor and life experience to visit this beach and pay respects for those who lived and the lost souls who lost life suddenly there.
Had a chance to see that beach, and I still cannot grasp how they finally took it. You really couldn't have asked for a better natural position to defend from.
i cant even come close to imagine being on those boats, waiting for the ramps to fall down so you could get hosed down by machine gun fire....Always respect veterans and people currently in the military, you have no idea what people have gone through...
Well said....about three years ago I had the pleasure of shaking the hand of a Pearl Harbor veteran who served on the Nevada. Not too many WWII veterans around anymore.
To all the men and women who serve----THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
I was in Normandy for the 50th anniversary in 1994. If you have not been, go. See what happened there. It is the most sacred place in the world in my opinion. All I can say is thank you to our veterans for your service!
that:s a great video,i go to normandy every year ,and im going there again this year 2010. those men and young boys who came a shore on that morning were sacrificial. They say about 3000 men died ,but its closer to 10,000,The us army took all the news reels off all the news camera men who recored the whole scene that morning, and i heard they destroyed all of it 2 cover it up.any way a lot of men died so that we could live.i think of them all the time and all they have missed out on in life.
Places such as this had a deep impact upon me in europe, whatever nationality, the brutality/horror really hit home to me, i cried at many places, including Omaha beach, how anyone got ashore at all simply stunned me, seeing the German defences sent a chill through me, WW2 suddenly became more real than i could have imagined .
I have been home for some time now, but part of me stays on that beach, ill never be the same after being at places like that, and i can never say thankyou enough .
yeah well all your reply says to me is that you didn't read or think about what i said (either one i don't care prob both) and decided to make that comment. because if you had really read what i said then you would have understood that i was saying we shouldn't have war but we do.
When you are standing on this great beach alone with the wind on your face, remembering the history, you understand that the heaven can easily turns into hell
Thanks to every human on earth who fight against his own madness that we have all inside of us.
Thank you for that comment, I've done the very same thing, in July '09 I stood on Omaha, I broke into tears and just stood there for at least 15mins thinking...
R.I.P. all those brave souls they fought that day for america's freedom today, and for all americans that were very badly wounded and could not be saved, they just had to sit there, some with there skin all the way off, R.I.P.
I just came back from a two weeks trip to Normandy and visited all the places The 101st was at....i loved Utah Beach and espc. Foucarville...i can HIGHLY recommand to go there what ever it costs. I had to drive 1200km back to my hometown afterwards but it was worth it...was my second trip now and it wont be the last.
Thanks for making that video, it helps us younger people understand that alot of people have died in the most horrible ways so we could live free as european citizens and American citizens. It's a site of history that will never be forgoten, pls don't disrespect with dumb comments, respect the dead and be happy and charish what you have in life becausse, they paid the price so you could live free today
We all have learned from these darkest days of the human history. May Europe stay in peace forever now. We should never forget what happened back there...
well really since the war was there n people died there i don't think that you would want to swimm on that beach n besides let the spirits r.i.p there don't disturbe thats disrespectfull
at bunkers I visited at Point du hoc there.s no light. But there,s one bunker at omaha with it,s cannon, beside there,s a picture, of the same place, and the cannon is at same position! A lot of museums with true material like helmets, or landing ships
The greatest generation of Americans, Englanders, and Canadians. Always give them respect and think about them because they gave everything they had fearlessly, no matter if Hitler's vaunted atlantic wall lay in front of them or not.
Yeah, conveniently leaving out the Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Polish and French. Above all the French civilians who were sacrificed when the allies bombed the French towns in Normandy to disrupt the Germans.
If you talk about a war England fought in then its the English. If you want to talk about a war that Britain fought in, that BRITISH people were drafted into and died in, then at least recognize who died for your freedom.
Its like America isn't worth mentioning cause its joined to Canada.

I was in Normandy for the 50th anniversary in 1994. If you have not been, go. See what happened there. It is the most sacred place in the world in my opinion. All I can say is thank you to our veterans for your service!
billfish6244 2 years ago
that:s a great video,i go to normandy every year ,and im going there again this year 2010. those men and young boys who came a shore on that morning were sacrificial.

I just came back from a two weeks trip to Normandy and visited all the places The 101st was at....i loved Utah Beach and espc. Foucarville...i can HIGHLY recommand to go there what ever it costs. I had to drive 1200km back to my hometown afterwards but it was worth it...was my second trip now and it wont be the last.

is it possible to enter the bunkers?
samholdsworth 2 years ago
Yes, I was last week at the zone, and it´s possible enter and see the german bunkers. But don´t forget visit Pointe du hoc. Awesome
cwkarlos 2 years ago 4
are there still some german words and emblems on the walls of the bunkers?
mumugamer2006 2 years ago
at bunkers I visited at Point du hoc there.s no light. But there,s one bunker at omaha with it,s cannon, beside there,s a picture, of the same place, and the cannon is at same position! A lot of museums with true material like helmets, or landing ships

Can we find gun;s and ammos if we dig up the earth???
Atif6338 2 years ago
perhaps you should find something, but it´s no easy, there is a bussiness about the rest of the battle

Saving Private Ryan only shows a snapshot at how gnarly that battle was. It was carnage, like in the opening scene of the movie, for hours and hours.
Respect to all those who fought to save us.

The greatest generation of Americans, Englanders, and Canadians. Always give them respect and think about them because they gave everything they had fearlessly, no matter if Hitler's vaunted atlantic wall lay in front of them or not.
thecoolerstinger 2 years ago 4
god bless you
knox457 2 years ago
Yeah, conveniently leaving out the Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Polish and French. Above all the French civilians who were sacrificed when the allies bombed the French towns in Normandy to disrupt the Germans.
If you talk about a war England fought in then its the English. If you want to talk about a war that Britain fought in, that BRITISH people were drafted into and died in, then at least recognize who died for your freedom.
Its like America isn't worth mentioning cause its joined to Canada.
