Just like how American cinema (generally speaking) evolved from gung-ho John Wayne films towards movies like Platoon. So while historically inaccurate, the slaughter of most of the soldiers instead represents contemporary Russian society's attitudes of all those who died in the greater conflict. Anyways, great film.
