Bob embodied the spirit of the band better than any of the other three. I don't mean showing up drunk and playing sloppily. I mean being an underdog with no chance of making it big, knowing it full well, and not being particularly bothered about it. Paul has a lot more Mick Jagger in him than he'd ever like to admit.
What a rad preformance, legendary in everyway. It's hard to find music like this nowadays but los Angeles has a little underground post 90s rock movement bands like The Modern Past
Sound check, eh? That explains why they are still sober.
I saw them twice. The first time they spent the opening act sitting on the stage passing around a bottle of Jack and were so drunk that Paul just sort of made up lyrics and they played pretty much anything except their own songs. The second time they were sober and rocked. Still not sure which show I preferred.
Got to see them many times in Minneapolis and haven't seen anyone really hold a candle to their raw, rock, friggin radness...electric is the only way to say it...or a mess if you got unlucky one night late and they were several hundred beers deep..hehe...rock n roll.
@clubmojan That was the hook tho'...you may see a phenomenal show on Friday....and a complete waste of time on Saturday. Either way, I always had a good time. When they were "ON", there was Nobody better.
This takes me back to the first time I ever heard this song ... at a Replacement's sound check. The album wasn't released yet and we just went what the @&*% is this song! Our faces were melted.
Damn, i saw them there in early 1985, they were brilliant, it was as cold as shit out and one of the top 5 rock shows I ever saw in my life. They played everything from Black Diamond to Layla, one song to another without stop for about 3 hours straight. Amazing night.
Between the Replacements, Husker Du, and various other righteous bands... Ok and Prince, I'd say Minnesota had a sick grasp on the music scene in the 80's!!
yep replacements were the shit, it's ashame the goo dolls got paid and this band never did goo goo dolls suck and so does alot and i mean alot of new shit since the mids 90's to date, a bunch of shit music out there now.
That brief period during Let it Be and Tim, the Replacements were the greatest band on earth. Tim has this nervous tension about it that is hard to explain. It has such great writing and it feels like it could blow up at any moment . I hate to say it, but I have not played any post Bob albums in 20 years. Things were never the same. This was the band at it's zenith.
@ecosmart123 You are SO right on. That brief period was so damn good. I have so many of my good college memories tied to that particular era. I did love Pleased to Meet Me, but it simply was not the same without Bob on guitar. I admire Slim for stepping in: who in the hell would want to try and replace Bob? Couldn't be done. No way no how. R.I.P. Bob. I do NOT agree with ntas2004: I think the Goo Goo Dolls are a fine band. They stayed alive, which is a feat in and of itself.
i never saw them, but my dad has a funny story about the first time he saw them. they came out and they were dressed up as a family, and the only thing bob has on is a dipper.
They had some awesome songs but the audio on these sounds so crappy. Like this song & Kiss me on the Bus & Little Mascara. So disappointing the sound is horrid.
This was MY band, MY era of early-mid college. I saw them six times with Bob playing guitar, and six times after when it was never the same. Still amazing. My band tried to cover this song in college, and though I had an ace guitarist, he (and others after) could never figure out some of Westerburg's tunings and intro chords. God I miss Bob, too. Last show I saw him was Madison, WI during this tour.
@tzuellig It's in standard tuning, actually. You just ring the high E and B strings open while you play the melody of the riff on the G string. Kinda gives the impression of an open tuning, I guess. The rest is basically power chords. Like most replacements songs it is very simple and also an amazing and wonderful song.
It still makes me sad knowing 'ole Bobby isn't walking the streets of Minneapolis anymore. It's nice to see him in these videos having a great time with that wry smile of his.
Tim was the first Mats album I bought. I read a review in Musician, had no idea what they sounded like. Still stands up as one of my favorite records by anyone.
So fuckin' cool to see a clip with Bob Stinson, I"ll always love the Mats, but Paul screwed him, he was no worse than Paul when it came to showing up to play tanked. There was a great article in RS right after he died. Thank you so much for posting this, immediately went on my favorites. Anymore??
There's a early performance of them doing Johnny's Gonna Die in 1981, I think. You may have seen it. Paul's guitar is out of tune and Bob plays a great solo as always. Man I wish he was still alive.
nice performance, The Replacements are amazing... I wish the music video for this was up, one of my favorites.. though my fave 'Mats song is "Here Comes A Reguar", actually my fave song period.
great performance,But i gotta a question is the mats the place where bands would rock out in Texas?one of my friends told me,From what I heard,Pixies,Replacements and Tom petty were some of the acts there.Wow must've been a pretty cool place to hang out at and see new bands,I wonder how come they don't have it anymore?
Bobby Stinson is dead, but I'm glad to see his large talent so prominently displayed here. To see a band as deeply underground as the Mats joining the major leagues (P.T.M.M.) is very satisfying.
God what a mess..on the ladder of succes...dreams unfulfilled..buy the CD!!!! We are the sons of no one..Bastards of Young...back in the day when most were alive.
OK Jesus you can like whatever you want.. I have some Cds that I keep to myself. But there are simply no words to describe how bad poison sucks. Talk dirty to me was a catchy pop song..BUt otherwise they are incredibly cheesy and the antithesis of everything the Replacements were...You have every right to like them, but I cant sit idly by and not mock you for it...
sounds good cos it's 5 in the afternoon and they havn't got into the beer yet ;-) I saw these guys a few times, they were either brilliant, or so drunk they could hardly stand.
Maxwell's is *the* club gig in New Jersey, as it is just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, NYC, NY. Many soon-to-be famous bands/singers played in the much desired Northeast NJ bar early in their careers. They also play there when their popularity wanes...
An all-time favorite band of mine! This Maxwell's place in Jersey seems to be somewhat of a hot bed of good music - I just checked out some Yo La Tengo with Alex Chilton vids a few minutes ago - another awesome set of tunes that was as well!
Oh man, I saw SO many great bands at Maxwells in Hoboken in the 80s/90s... and yeah, you can still see some of the greatest of that era play there... saw Robyn Hitchcock and Peter Buck play there recently (and had seen both play there 20 yrs earlier). The place hasn't changed, even though Hoboken has...
I wa fortunate to know Bob Stinson for a few months, and he was a very caring, real person. I do have some crazy stories... not ready to share right now,,,
@JimwithdaleO Slightly different remembering Bobby experience...What a dick. All night trying to trade stories of the Mats for drugs...So sad. I love the Mats and Bobby but it was so sad to see him "whoring" Mats stories for booze or drugs at the end. RIP Bob Stinson. Always my favorite band, we need more like them...
Dude, I'm so pissed that youtube won't post the SNL video of them doing "Bastards Of Young" and "Kiss Me On The Bus" And of course NBC won't ever release this footage...they have their heads up their ass!
I don't know what happened, I found those the other day, like just 3 or 4 days ago; I actually saw them...but youtube wouldn't let me save them (sorry for the inconvenience site maintenance) and then the next day...GONE!! I haven't seen these guys in like 10 years and Bob really stole the show. I had no idea he such a big part of the sound, my brain always pointed at Paul. Bob played the solos and really drove the bus!
I hung out with John in the mid-eighties and he clearly talked about his love for the Mats. I worked in the college radio station and when the Dolls came into the studio all they wanted me to play was "Let It Be" and "Tim"...
Exactly right, Electrickle. I'm tired of all that "My hero came first." bullshit. There's room in this world for Cobain, Westerberg, Strummer, etc. And everyone is influenced by someone else.
The influence the band had on Nirvana (a group that always wore their influences on their sleeve), more specifically Kurt Cobain, is undeniable. However, I don't believe Cobain was necessarily trying to emulate Paul's singing, but did draw heavily upon it
along with 73-era Stones it doesn't get any more real than this...when bob left the band wa never close to this level...whimsy and chaos is a good combination
Thanks for this. I was Bobby's gal for awhile in 1986, yeah, he was 30 I was reckless and 16. I miss him something fierce sometimes. I love the way Bobby gets shy when the camera is on him...that's exactly how he was when I met him in NYC. So shy but whimsical and totally crazy. It's great and such a treat for those of use who want to go back and see them at their height of success and debauchery.
I retract what I said about Paul. I think the main reason I put that comment was not so much personally about Paul as it was a desire on my part to counter the myth about the mats being lovable drunks. They were doing really hard drugs, like crystal meth, and one of them, Bob, died of a heroin overdose, and there's nothing poetic or beautiful about it. The mats were a great band, I just don't buy the myth.
Bob Stinson was a catalyst for the Replacements and they were never the same after he left. I saw them with Bob and later with Slim Dunlap and the difference was tangible. I never knew there was a 'myth' regarding the 'Mats, but I don't think it's fair to judge musicians by their personal habits, weaknesses or addictions. It's the music. Bobby Stinson is dead and people miss him. Peace.
Cobain stole that lyric from androdgynos "He might be a father, but he sure ain't a dad" and then In serve the servants by Nirvana its "I tried hard to have a father
But instead I had a dad", I am a fan of both but its blatently obvious here, interesting though..
The Replacements took this statement from elsewhere, too. It's apopular saying, hell, it's even been used to a couple of books dating back to the '30's. Westerberg certainly isn't the first person to use it.
As for Cobain being influenced by The Replacements. I don't think he was DIRECTLY inspired by JUST this band. At the time this 'sound' was common within a certain scene, just like *insert modern band here*'s style can also be found in one of their peer's style.
Fucking amazing, but not as stellar as the 1986 SNL performance which was... well, shit, I don't have words. Sans the Replacements & Husker Du, there would not have been Nirvana, much as I love them.
I had the same Meat Pupppets shirt. Saw them on the "Let It Be" tour--the show was great at times, at other times it sucked. They got too wasted and Bob started playing about 10 different cover tunes, each of which crashed to a halt after 20-30 seconds. Oh, well.
so damn good its breath taking. so damn awful its histaricle. thats the 'mats for ya. greatest rock n roll band ever.

Dude, I'm so pissed that youtube won't post the SNL video of them doing "Bastards Of Young" and "Kiss Me On The Bus" And of course NBC won't ever release this footage...they have their heads up their ass!

Anyone have the "banned" SNL version of this song? Please post!
aurillium 3 years ago
I don't know what happened, I found those the other day, like just 3 or 4 days ago; I actually saw them...but youtube wouldn't let me save them (sorry for the inconvenience site maintenance) and then the next day...GONE!! I haven't seen these guys in like 10 years and Bob really stole the show. I had no idea he such a big part of the sound, my brain always pointed at Paul. Bob played the solos and really drove the bus!

They should have gotten the success that the Goo Goo Dolls achieved. If it wasn't for Paul Westerberg, Johnny Rzenick would never have had a career.
Longhornzmatt 3 years ago
I hung out with John in the mid-eighties and he clearly talked about his love for the Mats. I worked in the college radio station and when the Dolls came into the studio all they wanted me to play was "Let It Be" and "Tim"...

That last post is intended for a reply to "jeremyindiana"s comment. No clue why it got posted up here. Go Replacements.
achester12 3 years ago
Cobain? who cares how much he was influenced by the replacements? The Replacements did 40 great songs and Cobain did 5 at best.
11xzxzxz 3 years ago
Westerberg? who cares how much he was influenced by the clash? The Clash did 40 great songs and Westerberg did 5 at best.

Strummer? who cares how much he was influenced be the who? The Who did 40 great songs and Strummer did 5 at best.
Electrickle 3 years ago
Exactly right, Electrickle. I'm tired of all that "My hero came first." bullshit. There's room in this world for Cobain, Westerberg, Strummer, etc. And everyone is influenced by someone else.
tatermitts 3 years ago 5
Lmao this is hysterical. I'm fans of Westerberg, Cobain, Strummer and Townsend!
All of them kick ass! We can all agree that they kick Fred Durst's ass, as well as the shit that is emo and modern day indie rock.

Further proof that punk is not necessarily a sound or a look, but an attitude. Man, do I fucking miss these guys!

Yo I wish I could give u TWO thumbs up but youtube only allows one vote!! loll. Keep it real dude, you said it best. Oh, and, Replacements kick ass.

Right on, man. Thx for the good words.

The influence the band had on Nirvana (a group that always wore their influences on their sleeve), more specifically Kurt Cobain, is undeniable. However, I don't believe Cobain was necessarily trying to emulate Paul's singing, but did draw heavily upon it
Alex456987 4 years ago
along with 73-era Stones it doesn't get any more real than this...when bob left the band wa never close to this level...whimsy and chaos is a good combination

It's great and such a treat for those of use who want to go back and see them at their height of success and debauchery.

westerburg = creepy asshole

The mats were a great band, I just don't buy the myth.
reaperpro 4 years ago
Bob Stinson was a catalyst for the Replacements and they were never the same after he left. I saw them with Bob and later with Slim Dunlap and the difference was tangible. I never knew there was a 'myth' regarding the 'Mats, but I don't think it's fair to judge musicians by their personal habits, weaknesses or addictions. It's the music. Bobby Stinson is dead and people miss him. Peace.

I fucked that up a little but it makes sense, I've just stumbled in from a night out so forgive me.

One of the greatest bands ever.

Cobain was definitely influenced by the replacements. Like Nirvana they were punk but also wrote great pop songs
padaza 4 years ago 3
Cobain stole that lyric from androdgynos "He might be a father, but he sure ain't a dad" and then In serve the servants by Nirvana its "I tried hard to have a father
But instead I had a dad", I am a fan of both but its blatently obvious here, interesting though..
ogreatkingmuuk 4 years ago

JoePublicFilms 4 years ago
umm...... more like husker du, melvins, and pixies. i dont think cobain had any influence from replacements.

No influence on Cobain? I mean, like, oh Nevermind.

great song and great band. Man I would kill to have seen them in the 80s

I had the same Meat Pupppets shirt. Saw them on the "Let It Be" tour--the show was great at times, at other times it sucked. They got too wasted and Bob started playing about 10 different cover tunes, each of which crashed to a halt after 20-30 seconds. Oh, well.
mikewattdisciple 4 years ago
Last time I hung with bob he had the same coat & shirt0 ;) never really liked the rest of the bunch...uptight blah
Eeva112 4 years ago
dude fuck you, you probably never saw the replacements. how would westerberg and the others be uptight?

I remeber the "let it be" tour was better, Bob got naked lots.
