  • Amazing.. Hopefully in 20 years i'll be as close to that as i can >.<

  • Hey man,

First off, let me start by saying that I absolutely loved this rendition of body and soul. By far one of the best on youtube. Especially when you play the head at 4:00, one of the most beautiful tenor sounds I've ever heard. I just have one comment, and it's really a matter of taste. I sometimes feel that your technical runs distract from the purity of your tone and melodic ideas in some parts. Maybe use it more sparsely, and it will add a lot artistically. Take care Mr. Rojas.

  • very nice..but i heard some lick from Brecker in song Naima..but awesome, fantastic!!!

  • Beautiful!

  • Anibal thanx for your vids man !! learning from them everyday !!

  • who would "dislike" this ??? this is amazing playing !!! Anibal i wanna be you when i grow up !! !

  • Fantastic. Your low notes in the beginning were gorgeous..

  • You killing daddio!

  • Hey Anibal, another great video..

Im trying some ligatures on my guardala (sudio)..

can you suggest a ligature for it? -perhaps the one you use in this video?

    thanks.

  • @bambaDisease I use a selmer alto ligature on my guardala or a regular rovner ligature. Never really liked any others for this mouthpiece... all the best...

  • @APGR

the alto selmer lig' is realy comfortable..

but it squashes my reeds, I dont know if it ruins them

  • @bambaDisease It has to be the silver metal selmer lig.. it shouldn't squash your reeds too much.

  • is guardala king or MB ???

  • @caxassax MB

  • that was amazing...

  • better than brecker, a unique darker sound.

  • Fabulous intro - beautiful, long runs, no rush, very bluesy. I can tell immediately that you're someone special w/that axe cradled in your loving hands.

Gorgeous tour-de-force, on an all-time classic of jazz!

    Thanks, Anibal - LOVE IT!!!

  • lol do you like brecker?

  • That GUardala sounds Beautiful, man keep at it!!!!!

  • MAESTRO MIL BENDICIONES

  • ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING!

i'm a tenor player and understand that getting all those notes on perfect time is an amazing feat.

    well done

  • is this concert at CCM?

  • :O amazing!!

    I want the music!!

  • Really nice, Man!

  • just awesome! I'm a long time jazz guitarist learning tenor now and needless to say an absolute trane freak.. i haven't heard many who I feel compelled to say how much I appreciate their mastery but you are certainly one.. brecker influence perhaps but I would go straight to trane to describe the impression this made on me.. love everything about your playing, not least of which is your harmonic and melodic sense.. awesome man.. :-)

  • you kidding me?! his tone is that exactly of michael breckers, and a lot of the ideas too!

  • he really does sound similar to Brecker!

  • dude, a lot of brecker influence. great song, beautiful tone, great playing!

  • I could have used more choruses and more notes for sure.

  • Wow. Your sound is mellow and beautiful at 2:50.

    You. Are. Amazing.

  • i love the sound man. what kind of sax is that? and what mouthpiece do u play on?

  • That's an old Guardala I have although this was one of the last times I used it. Now I play on an AMMA. The sax is an old Mark VI... thanks for watching....

  • sounds good man keep it up

  • Man... that gaurdala sounds too smooth and bright... but I'd love to see how you sound on the AMMA.

  • very nice...

  • i find all these negative comments say mr. rojas's playing reminds them of brecker very amusing...i like brecker. very much, in fact. i don't really find any offense at being reminded of him

  • Brecker, must be happy. He now knows that is legacy will live from now on. Love to BRECKER. Thanks Anibal for keeping it for real.

  • Super!

  • Beautiful...sounds really great!

  • unbelievable fast and good man !

  • I dont know how that is unfortunate! Brecker was, and still is, one of the greatest tenor sax giants of his time.

  • I wish I was half the player you are.

  • Fab!! nice to hear Brecker influences in a younger player these days. What wonderful control and passion!!!

  • My man... You just became my inspiration. Muy bien hermano, sigue dandole duro.

  • Wow. Man that is one mean tune!

    It's so unique

  • how are you playing this. In what order are these notes in? Is there a name for the style the notes are in.. It sounds like soul or blues? They sound like random notes but in a way fit. What is this called and how do you do it?

  • Bravo, I just can't stop listening...

  • Bravo!

  • I play the tenor sax aswell and im trying to find the sheet music for this song but i cant find it. :(

  • get real book vol. 1

  • holy shit i wish i was tht good

    can i get leasons plz

i can play a mad tenor but nothin like tht

  • 5 stars and favourited nuff said

  • You obviously like Brecker. Sounds good

  • that was spectacular. im a fan ive been watching your vids. what kind of sax is that? do u make your own reeds or buy a certain kind? im inspired

  • Mark VI -- no way, I would never be crazy enough to make my own reeds. I'll leave that to double reed players.

  • SOUNDS BEAUTIFUL

  • YAY! THIS IS WHAT I PLAY!

  • c'est bien mais je n'accroche pas, beaucoup trop ne notes qui ne servent à rien à mon gout.

    Ceci dit belle prestation technique

  • i play the trumpet but i want to play the tenor sax

  • Excelente!

  • He has great chops and a nice tone. Harmonic concept is based on Breckerisms, not necessarily bad, but this can be overdone. This is the problem with some New York players, they feel in order to establish dominance that you have to kill people with notes. He impressed my intellect, but not my heart. Also listen to Brecker's record Nearness of You (Ballads) with James Taylor. Feel his emotion. Don't fall prey to the concept of having to prove your manhood! Keep up the good work! - Sal

  • Thank you for your all-too-critical display of name and knowledge dropping. Just because Brecker did coined some of these "licks" as his own easily recognizable stylings doesn't mean that the rest of the world is banned from them.

Second, if he has to be Brecker before you will be happy, then you have some twisted requirements.

Third. I'm sure he really appreciated your help pointing him towards a brecker recording. Obviously by his display of "Breckerisms", he has problably heard these

  • recordings that I might even term as the more "poppish", or "digestible by the layman's ear" tune.

I don't mean to take jabs... I just get a little bent out of shape when people are so quick to offer criticisms.

Next time, I'm sure he'll strive to, "impress your heart."

Anibal - Love it man, keep it up!

I'll post some stuff here soon, the only things on my page are a few years old.

  • nothing is new in music there are 7notes itz all been done before in some guise ,i think to quote licks from another player is a display of how much you appreciate that artist, nothing wrong in that

  • you sound pretty good man but that 1st note was shaky.

  • be you,

    not brecker.....

  • Wow you sound even better than Dexter Gordon in that soug.

  • That riff at the end sounded familiar. Stolen from Dexter Gordon, perhaps? :D

  • This guy doesn't understand the concept of playing a ballad. He is a great player, but this is an excersize of self indulgence and stylistic deafness. Ballads are supposed to be pretty, not kenny g style fingering excersizes, too bad!!

  • yo dick, 1st. kenny g. hasn't got such a great knowledge of harmonies....2nd it takes a lot of notes to actually be able to play the kind of ballad you want. listen to this guy again in 20 years, you'll know what I mean.

  • I'll sort of stand up for Mr. G, because he earned a degree in music performance(correct me if I'm wrong), but it seems that the only reason his playing is so predictable and uneducated sounding, is because that's what makes him the big bucks. Therefore he found the zone that kept the money flowing, and got stuck in it. I'm sure he knows his stuff, but when it comes to throwing down tracks, it's all the same in my opinion.

  • suppose you're right. that must mean Mr G. must hate his own music by now....lol

  • I would imagine, but on the other hand, I think what it boils down to, is that he discovered that many of the untrained ears for jazz, and saxophone music in general, don't particularly like Improvisation and change in style in musicians. That is a sad thing in my opinion, because you see it in a lot of popular music, such as Rolling Stones for an example. They were experimental up until they gained worldwide fanfare for their work....I shall continue in the next comment.

  • ...Kenny G did the same thing(you may already know this, but some that read these comments might not), and it was respectively considered Smooth Jazz/Pop. I guess it can be said, that it's been his cup of yea since the start, because I was thinking if he made a transition from Smooth Jazz to Pop, but since the first album he did some pop in there too. Basically, I guess he shrugs it off when he hears that people(especially trained ears) have little respect for calling himself a Jazz musician.

  • is this john coltrane's body and soul? or another body and soul?

whichever it was, i loved it!

    great job!!

  • kayata doh!mayoha nimo da!

  • brilliant!

  • you think he listens to brecker?? hahahaha nice job man

  • Outstanding!

  • Man, I never know what to practice!!!

  • The best thing to do is just sit down with records of your favorite artists and just listen, and eventually play along. Transcription is a huge key to learning the jazz idiom.

  • wow i wish i could play tenor like this

mine sounds like a dying duck =]

    I SUCK at improv tooo

  • practice makes perfect!

  • Wow!!!!!!!!!!

  • Absolutely fantastic....

  • Anibal Rojas, that was phenomenal!

You have a wonderful mastery of the Saxophone, I hope to play at your level one day. I'm going to be a freshman at UNT next year, my journey starts there.

  • Sweet Solo dude!!!

  • Sweet solo mate!! maybe slightly too many brecker licks though.

  • You did WORK on this song. This is one of my favorite jazz ballads. Maybe a few too many notes (The cadence would've been more impressive if the entire song wasn't like that)but that tone and your technicality makes up for it. Can't wait till I can play changes like that.

    Sick job.

  • how do you make the honking type sounds, I can make them but they go overboard and just sound bad

  • nice usage of the scales. Sometimes a person can do too much of it, just too much of anything...well..can be too much..

But yea I can tell you meant it to be laid back yet strung out at the same time, so keep up the playing! :-)

  • great player..

    and great solo impro..

but i think that this is not difficult to get if you know 100% the scale where you're playing

    it requires practice..

  • that's part of my current struggle, being very familiar with the scales, being able to improv while making it sounding like I know what I'm doing..just like this video depicts :-)

  • damn i wish i could play like that i have been playing for 5 years

  • "Phantomdennis2006 Some people play tenderly on ballads. Your version seems like an exercise in dim. scales and altered dominant substitutions."

My thought exactly... What is this guy trying to express? Beats me as all I hear is extroversion.

  • i've benn played bassoon in gth alto sax in 7th and now bari and tenor sax in 8th best at my school and but his and jhon coltrane give me sumthing to work towards

  • Some people play tenderly on ballads. Your version seems like an exercise in dim. scales and altered dominant substitutions.

  • Muy bonito! ¿Alguien conoce algun libro bueno con canciones de este tipo para tenor?

Gracias y disfruten de este lujo!

  • Shure maybe girls can play alto but now tenor is a Man Exclusive

  • truly exquisite

  • muy bien Anibal,...!! nice control!

  • where do you go to school?

  • excelente!! de venezuela.. el mejor saxo tenor hispanoamericano!! sonido, feeling, etc

  • wow, man your amazing, first the AMAZING altissimo, and now this, great controll! especially w/ the low notes, I wish I could play mine that quietly down low...

  • Exquisite! Great dynamics.

  • im learning sax. im not this good.

  • truly wonderful ^^ 5/5

  • awesome

  • I suppose we all have our off days!!

Just Kidding - Fkin' Awesome Stuff.

Think I'll put my tenor back in the loft and take up crochet!!

  • i play tenor in my band XD.

to bad im the only one :(

andi hate band but my parents wont let me quit so im stcuk in it till high skooll

i started the end of 7th grade and stuck with it in 8th still in 8th

i played clarinet in 6th and 7th grade.

i miss it. but hey it was girly i needed a manlier instrument XDXDXD lol.

  • Clarinet isn't Girly o.o..

And Saxophone isn't a manly instrument!

The best Clarinet players at my school are boys, and I'm the best Sax player at my school, and I'm a girl!

  • no offense ..but ... i wouldn t havepost a comment under this video if i where you ... and you talk about being the best at your school ..? WTF !! who the ... cares about you anyway ... y would be ashamed to say i play the sax if i were you ...

  • well said

  • Very Well Done!!!

  • I don't think he sounds exactly like Michael Brecker, yes they both sound great, a fine example of tenor saxophone sound, something to work towards. I agree with 1234 Jesus I hope some day I sound that good!

  • i hope one day i could play like that.

  • You sound exactly like Micheal Brecker when play. I mean there is almost no difference between your playing, and his. Great playing, but I want to hear someone play different.

  • I play the tenor sax at my school (8th grade) and it's always so fun to listen to a really great player =) makes me want to stick to playing my tenor =D thanks for the inspiration, man!

  • cool man. im a tenor player and in 8th grade too. but i don't think i am so good because i only started in September... how long have you been playin?

  • Lol we all played in 8th grade it seems. Thank goodness Im out of it.

  • I've been playing since the beginning of 7th grade. I got lessons with the alto in 6th but in 7th I wanted more of a challenge. I just fell in love with the tenor and am still playing it today =D

  • What I would give to come up with something this beautiful. When you came make memories of long ago come up from just a few minutes, that when you know you have talent. And not just memories about love. Memories about depression, anger, all that.

  • this is so beautiful, i play myself and WOW so beautiful

  • overwrought but a lesson in soundshape

  • great tone and phrasing!

  • Great solo. Like the crazy C intro!!

(Some players finger altissimo, some harmonics, the strength of the partials are dictated by the timbre of the horn)

  • how in the world do you do that i wish i was that good im ok and im a aspiring jazz player and i wanted to no if you new any tips 4 me i like idol you now that is amazing what kinda sax is that?? selmer paris by chance?

  • Beatiful.

  • 1 of the best i ever heard! Can u tell me what buttons you press to hit high 'g' altissimo? Seems like 4 me, every high note is ez but that 1 note!

  • Great shirt.... Slominsky lives!!!

  • i like his contrasting tones. going from bright and edgy to soft and warm. true talent resides in being able to make that choice effectively. definitely has more contemporary influences in his playing though. and what the hell's wrong with having too much Brecker? he's a legacy of his own.

  • Great job man how long have you been playing? and what horn and mouthpiece do you use?

  • great stuff!

  • wow, such a brilliant upper register. very nice dude.

  • let me see you do better smartass

  • let me see you do better smartass

  • samjant,

What is it that makes him just ok? Is it his tone, his musicianship, his knowledge of the instrument? Don't you think this guy has talent backed up by musicianship and an excellent understanding of the tenor?

  • how good is sax sounds depends on how good you play...talent is very important in the music...so..he is ok..=)

  • i would like to state that i myself play tenor sax and this guy HAS talent. MAJOR talent. People don't understand that to get to all those low and high ass notes, you need the talent and baby, he got it <3

  • I hear John Klemmer saying, "Wow, this guy sounds a lot like I do" somewhere in the background.

  • great stuff!

  • exellent what make is yur sax? i want your sound

  • omg, return of brecker

  • Anibel to me sounds exactly like Ed Calle. He does sound amazing, but i feel he is more like Calle than Brecker or Trane or Getz.

  • nice, sounds smooth

  • influnced. but you have to have guts to play this.

  • very good. excelent. great.

  • TOCAS BIEN PRIMO soy Checho el de la quena, consiguete un correo en hotmail, sabes yo tambien toco saxo pero no ta bien como tu, eres muy bueno

  • Very good...

  • His parkeresque licks sound like bean, and his coltrane licks smooth as getz. I love it.

  • wow great tone, love your style, keep it up!

  • that sax set sounds just exactly like Michael Brecker's...lol

  • he really does...check out "Sax Summit: Michael Brecker, David Liebman and Joe Lovano". sounds just like'em

  • man that was cool. tremendous tone.

  • very nice ...5*

  • definitely Brecker influence on this! Very nice!

  • yeah! coltranissim

  • A bit of Coltrane in places...

  • VERY GOOD !thanks !

  • When's your next performance?

  • Anibal really is one of the very best.

  • Anibal muy bueno el sonido la tecnica que boquilla usas, soy tambien saxophonista saludos y pa lante el Jazz lo unico que nos queda de bueno...

  • AWESOME PLAYING!!! but not a patch on COURTNEY PINE!!!

  • Damn.. Very, very nice.. I love the sound in this.

  • sounds a bit like Steve Marcus.....

  • Great playing, keep it up!
