When I was little, this sequence made me glad i was an only child and had no competition for the spoiling...and then when I was 10 my puppy somehow beat me out anyway.
I totally don't blame the brothers for being jealous i mean it's human nature to be jealous especially in this kind of situation but who the heck would be jealous enough to push your own brother (even if it's your "step" brother) into a freaking hole and sell him into slavery, i mean come on. =( now that's the part that's inhuman
you know, to add to the tragedy of this song and movie, it shows that Joseph's brothers did want to take part in raising their brother, I'm not sure if it's the same in scripture as I don't practice. But it makes it even sadder in that if their father allowed them to help in raising him, they would have all benefited. Instead what makes it sad is that they could have been a real family instead of a group of brothers and the obvious favorite
Joseph was the favorite of Jacob because he is the son of his old days plus Joseph's mother is the only beloved woman of Jacob's life, Rachel. in the bible, it was stated that Rachel was the beloved wife and she is barren, so for a long time, Rachel was childless thats why when Joseph was born, Jacob treated him different from the others, like for the first time he had a SON from his beloved woman. :)
I understand this movie so much more than when I was a kid, and do agree that his father definitely was not right in raising him differently--especially with so many siblings who were raised much more harshly. At the same time, I understand why they raised him that way. He was the only child to come from that particular wife--a son, no less--and he wanted to give Joseph all the love he would have given the sons that wife might have provided.
@otakuattack321 I still don't see it as fair/sensible. Sons are sons regardless of which wife he loved more. Besides he should have known that jealousy is a strong driving force for drastic actions and he gave them plenty of cause to be jealous.
@propogandalf That's true, but he had never wanted his first wife in the first place, and had only wanted Rachel. So it only makes sense that he would love the son he feels is closest to him, because Joseph was the son he'd always WANTED, not the one he had to have because he was married to someone else first and had to have someone to carry on the line. The only reason he had the others is because he needed heirs and workers, and Rachel was supposedly barren. Human emotions aren't clear cut. =/
Quick historical note, poly armory was a common tribal practice, Jacob mated and accepted heirs from 4 women. The story goes that though Rachel was his favorite she was not a success as a breeder, the arrival and survival of Joseph was a miracle as far their union was concerned. For a very interesting perspective on this story read"The Red Tent".
Technically, it's not the brothers who's evil in my opinion, it's the father. See, he kept raising Joseph apart from his brothers and kept treating him as if he was something special. Pretty obviously the brothers hated this kind of biased loving. I can understand them, as all of them were older than him as well as their father loving his mother more than he loved Leah.
@Kainmaster I agree that the reason they betrayed Joseph was because they're brother showed favoritism. But he isn't evil. He never meant it 2 happen. He was just so happy that Rachel, who was supposedly barren bore a child. He probably thought this meant his birth and existence had some significance. And its not totally unheard of that parents show favoritism though not as noticeably. However, they made that choice 2 betray him, even if their reason is understandable, it is still wrong.
@LauraandMoreLaura Hahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're face may be different colors of the rainbow if you were to say that to somebody who was angry at you.
If i was one of Josephs brothers i'd sell that brat too. And the best part...i would feel no guilt...none whatsoever. i would most certainly be able to sleep at night knowing that i sold that one into slavery.
I think the brothers were wrong for everything they did to Joseph. But seeing the way he and his father acted, i'm not going to say it was unprovoked.
THIS IS THE WAY TO RAISE CHILDREN!! Of course, not only one child but ALL of them.

@RobotMice because he was Rachel's son. Do you know Rachel and Jacob's love story? Sorry, I'd run out of room to type it here, but you can see it in Genesis and probably other Jewish and Muslim scriptures too.
@RobotMice Leah and Rachel are sisters. Jacob had an agreement with their father that if he work for him (the dad) for seven years he could marry Rachel, the pretty daughter. Jacob was tricked into marrying Leah because she was older than Rachel. He had to work another seven years for the right to marry Rachel too. Some of his sons are from Leah and some are from servants. For a long time Rachel could not bear children. She had another son after Joseph though, Benjamin.
Poor joseph. all he wants is to be liked by his brothers. mean old jacob. I get why joe had to b learned and stuff but his brothers when joe was born wanted him but because he got zealous treatmenthis bros hated him. Was the coat really neccessary? everybody should b respected equally and if God has a problem mayb he shoulda found another way.I think they shoulda added his sis in the movie so joe could at least have one friend
The fault was on all sides, Jacob for favoring(although he was right to be thankful since Rachel was supposed to be barren), Joseph became prideful because of his treatment, and the brothers were very jealous.
God made a perfect plan out of human's mistakes, everything that happened had to, and was no mistake. And because He did it that way, all of Egypt was saved, and a family was brought together.
They are the worst fucking parents ever!!!! Who literally says that they live ad believe in one child more. He gets what's coming to him his brothers were justified
@MaTcHBoOkPoEt13 But remember, if he hadnt been set apart and given the special education he would never been equipped with the knowledge to save egypt, and the lives of his family in the seven year famine. It was part of God's plan for him to be sold into slavery and eventually reach the point where he will be in a seat of power. And also, Jacob worked 14 years for rachel but was tricked into marrying leah. Of course he would treasure the only son of the woman he actually loved a little more
Joseph's coat of many colors is one of my favorites in the Bible...I can relate a lot to Joseph...Like him, I tend to be misunderstood. Like him, I was born to my parents in an older age.
i think the father was so wrapped up in him being the 1st born of a wife that could bare a child that he shunned the other sons. Juda is the oldest he should have stopped them. but slavery? that was just not brotherly. Jealousy is very crafty, but god has a plan.
If I was Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,Issachar etc. i would be irritated! I have a sister and i am the eldest and if i see a glimpse of favouritism I think of that as unjust. I have sympathy for these guys, I'm not surprised you got pushed in a pit and left to die. However I do think that he was brought up to be a vain spoilt brat so, I think parenting has something to do with it!
I would be jealous too if my parents gave my youngest brother that much praise but Joseph deserved it. Regardless of how jealous i would be if i were Joesph's brothers i would'nt be so envious enough to push him into a hole! People can be so insane, even back then!
i don't think the animation is so great (but obviously they had less funds). Plus the characters are not as well developed as in Prince of Egypt (which was an enlightened, not to mention beautiful take on the Exodus story). Still, it's a good direct to video feature, not a masterpiece, but I did really enjoy it as a kid.
This is the story of my life. My brother is Joseph, I'm just the sibling. most days, believe me, i'd love to shove him in a hole and leave him. It's so unright for parents to set one child apart, and claim they are 'more special' then the other. Just because my brother was sick and 'God saved him' that makes him better then me? Fuck them.
Its very mean of the father to raise Joseph "apart"(and In a different way) from his brothers. Because then they will never be able to create a bond to him, a bond that all the other brothers have to each other. He will never be able to be one of them. Therefor its more understandable why his brothers later betrayed him and treated him the way they did.
@willyboy333willyboy Yeah, and Joseph sounds kind of arrogant in this song, thanks to the father raising him apart from his brothers and telling him all his life he was the best. He doesn't care for his brothers's work in the end, just about being the miracle child... I can understand how they would grow very jealous of him.
I think it was inevitable seeing as Jacob was raised in an environment where he was his mother's favourite and his brother Esau was his father's favourite; plus the fact that Joseph was the first of only two children by the woman that he loved most- he was naturally going to favour Joseph and later Benjamin. IMHO they were all at fault, Jacob for his favouritism, Joseph for his pride and the brothers for their mad jealousy. I think as well, this is an amazing adaptation of the story, love it:)
@willyboy333willyboy Well, I don't think mean is exactly the right word. Their father never meant anything bad, he probably thought that Joseph's birth was really important, as his mother was not meant to have a child. Although,I do agree that the different treatment was the cause of their betrayal.
@willyboy333willyboy, I agree that it was not the greatest idea that the father ever had to treat one son better than the rest, but there still isn't any excuse to have done what they did. Family is family, and if the only complaint that they could've made against their youngest brother is that their father spoiled him most...then I think they've got bigger problems than the 'miracle child'...lol
I feel thats a lot of expectation to place on a child! But, really, I love this movie, and Prince of Egypt. They're both so beautiful, even to an agnostic like me.
Josef was the most beautiful man on earth in his time. Its funny they never mentioned this aspect in the story. There are actually many interesting elements that have been left out in this animation.
The cloack he is wearing is not one which his mother made it is the cloack of Abraham. This is a cloack from paradise. The Arc Angel brought it down to Abraham when he was thrown in the fire. The cloack cannot burn.
Actually, historically, it was a "coat of many cloths," not colors as it was white. When a father gave this to his son, it meant he was the successor as head of the family, a big deal since at the time, Joseph was the "youngest" and conflicted with Juda's birthright
@EclipseRaven Wasn't Reuben the eldest? But, if I remember correctly Reuben did something distasteful and Jacob passed the blessing to his son, Joseph. You have to remember he was the firstborn of Rachel and Jacob loved Rachel more than he did Leah.
@dragoscilvio while im sure you already know, to avoid confusion, I will tell you anyway. The Bible was not written in english and the people who translated it sometimes made mistakes, when they translated "many cloths" they were not aware of the importance of that kind of coat, and assumed that it must have been many colors because it has a similar translation from hebrew and in the period it was translated being able to afford bright colors was a great sign of status and wealth.
@Rubenmeister10 Reuban, Levi, and Simeon were denied a large inheritance and also the Headship of the House because of sin, Reuban slept with one of Jacob's wives, Bellah I think, and Levi and Simeon basically murdered a whole city
I love Joseph, but i can understand the brothers anger but i always get so mad when they..uuhhhgg! They are just jealous they aren't as hot or have a such a beautiful voice...that's boarderline blasphamy...lol
I love this story so much! I'm glad that it doesn't stray too much from the real one. I only wish Jacob(Josephs father) hadn't treated the brothers that way. He was just being selfish. I don't blame the brothers at all. Great job on the quality too!
I blame the parents more than the brothers, because they treated them as yesterday's newspaper and spoiled their newborn son. Parents ought to give their children the same kind of love as their newborn and know that they are special no matter what.
@hiedgar The thing is Jacob had married two women. He worked for seven years to marry Rachel (Joseph's mother) but Rachel's father tricked him into marrying Leah, the eldest daughter. So Jacob worked another seven to marry Rachel. The other sons are all Leah's and only Joseph is the son of Rachel, whom Jacob really loves. Yes, Jacob shouldn't have shown favortism but causing the brothers to be jealous and the selling Joseph into slavery all worked accordingly to God's plan.
@superryomafan I don't see how the plans of the LORD have backfired. For one, even though the Bible has its ending like any other story, we are still creating paths and making choices that will, eventually, intertwine with the end of the Bible; thus Christ Jesus will descend and Rapture His people to grant them eternal life by His side. God has everything planned and it will all work out. I have faith in Him.
@superryomafan They suffered and died, yes, but it's not as though it was all for naught. If they believed in the LORD and followed His Word, they have everlasting life with Him. Sure, we don't like being put into such situations of torment and to die either slowly or violently--no one does (unless they're masochists); this is a temporary place for us anyway. Death is sad, don't get me wrong; however the reward on the other side is worth it if you believe.
I LIKE THIS MOVIE AND I ALSO OWN A COPY OF THIS MOVIE ON DVD! IT IS A TRUE DEPICTION OF THE STORY OF THE TWELVE SONS OF ISRAEL! I TESTIFY THAT THE BIBLE IS THE TRUE WORD OF GOD AND THAT HIS SON JESUS DIED FOR OUR SINS I SAY THIS IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST AMEN!
@VeryFairygirl14 I agree with you, however, everything worked out according to God's plan. If the brothers hadn't been jealous, they never would've sold him into slavery. And because of those acts of hatred and betrayal, in the end, Joseph became a powerful man in Egypt and thus brought a prosperous time for his people.
@Persona100Duh and then he died and his brothers and thier children got blamed for it and were placed in slavery and after generations came moses who freed the people and brought them out of eygpt
@GreekMythFan7 It makes me wonder too--I can only guess because, even though the Bible is our way of connecting with Him, there are things He does we just don't understand and yours is a good one. Maybe it was some sort of punishment? You know, because in the Old and New Testament He would show them ways and they'd refuse to look at it. But also, some bad things can be used for His good purpose and drive us back to God when driven to despair.
@superryomafan Then God took them OUT of slavery. Brought the plagues and everything just to set His beloved people go. And even after Him delivering them out of that brutality, Moses leaves for 40 days and then returns to see them worshiping a golden calf.
@Persona100Duh then if his "will" was to let them go anyway y didnt he just NOT put them in slavery to begin with and cut out the middle ma so to speak
@superryomafan You really think He enslaved His people on purpose? Yes, He probably could have done that and saved them tons of grief, but one: how and why should I question the way God works? And even after He took them out, they still turned away. Two: Being a follower of God doesn't mean everything will be hunky-dory forever. Clearly, anyone who believes in God is mocked and ridiculed--unless He grants it, you're not called to live comfortably as a Child of God. This life is temporary anyway.
@oblviousnesssucks1 A good question, I was born catholic as my parents were so as a child I read it and a few years later I converted to a new religion as I had lost faith in christianty/judaism (there's other reasons involved but this is one of the main ones).
However I later re-read it mostly to re-gain a grasp of the lessons Joseph (the Patriarch, and one of my heroes growing up) & Jesus and many similar stories were trying to teach.
@Dinoross Probably cause Joseph is supposed to be the miracle child not him lol, not sure no doubt Jacob thought something along the lines of; 'Best to be modest and not to offend god'.
And given how Jacob in the stories is; modesty eventually seemed to become almost his middle name that he signed the papers with. (He's another one of those interesting figures from the bible stories)
@Dinoross yeah, he tricked his twin brother and had to leave to find a wife and seek safety. On the way to his uncle's he wrestled with God, and God siad he had now struggled with both man and God and has won the right to live, or something among those lines :-) anyway, yeah that's him - Joseph's father...it think xx
@oblviousnesssucks1 true however as a pagan let me just say that some prefer to watch the movie rather than read the bible no offense (though I have read it, I just don't believe in it but I have to admit that there are some biblical figures and stories that are just gorgeous (I like that word) such as this one)
heehee i just like this song XD stop arguing over it people have their own oppions people shees not everyone is a christian okay? let them think what they want to wether its true or not if their mind is made up about joseph being an "ass" so be it its their mistake not yours kay? just enjoy the dang video -.-
joseph was a miracle child because his mother Rachel had been barren for many, many years, wheras her sister Leah and other wives Bilhah and Zilpah had given Jacob many sons already.
Uhh... Looks like somebody is forgetting about their 10 other kids. :P

i think the father was so wrapped up in him being the 1st born of a wife that could bare a child that he shunned the other sons. Juda is the oldest he should have stopped them. but slavery? that was just not brotherly. Jealousy is very crafty, but god has a plan.

Well dang. I was a miracle child. Did I get a coat of many colous? No. Oh well, at least I'm the youngest and the only girl.

However I do think that he was brought up to be a vain spoilt brat so, I think parenting has something to do with it!
beckiebeckie123 1 year ago
I would be jealous too if my parents gave my youngest brother that much praise but Joseph deserved it. Regardless of how jealous i would be if i were Joesph's brothers i would'nt be so envious enough to push him into a hole! People can be so insane, even back then!

I like how the Joseph brothers says We will keep him from harm yet they sold him

i don't think the animation is so great (but obviously they had less funds).

Therefor its more understandable why his brothers later betrayed him and treated him the way they did.
willyboy333willyboy 1 year ago 78
@willyboy333willyboy Yeah, and Joseph sounds kind of arrogant in this song, thanks to the father raising him apart from his brothers and telling him all his life he was the best. He doesn't care for his brothers's work in the end, just about being the miracle child... I can understand how they would grow very jealous of him.
JulieWinchester 8 months ago 6
I think it was inevitable seeing as Jacob was raised in an environment where he was his mother's favourite and his brother Esau was his father's favourite; plus the fact that Joseph was the first of only two children by the woman that he loved most- he was naturally going to favour Joseph and later Benjamin. IMHO they were all at fault, Jacob for his favouritism, Joseph for his pride and the brothers for their mad jealousy. I think as well, this is an amazing adaptation of the story, love it:)
LesMisCatsGirl 8 months ago 4
@willyboy333willyboy Well, I don't think mean is exactly the right word. Their father never meant anything bad, he probably thought that Joseph's birth was really important, as his mother was not meant to have a child. Although,I do agree that the different treatment was the cause of their betrayal.
furzle1552 8 months ago
@willyboy333willyboy, I agree that it was not the greatest idea that the father ever had to treat one son better than the rest, but there still isn't any excuse to have done what they did. Family is family, and if the only complaint that they could've made against their youngest brother is that their father spoiled him most...then I think they've got bigger problems than the 'miracle child'...lol
flowergirl3211 5 months ago
@willyboy333willyboy i agree but we have to keep in mind that God had a plan for joseph and if that didnt happen God's plan wouldnt have worked

The cloack cannot burn.
hamnahiman 1 year ago
@hamnahiman huh thats pretty intresting
superryomafan 1 year ago
@hamnahiman
Actually, historically, it was a "coat of many cloths," not colors as it was white. When a father gave this to his son, it meant he was the successor as head of the family, a big deal since at the time, Joseph was the "youngest" and conflicted with Juda's birthright
EclipseRaven 1 year ago 65
@EclipseRaven Wasn't Reuben the eldest? But, if I remember correctly Reuben did something distasteful and Jacob passed the blessing to his son, Joseph. You have to remember he was the firstborn of Rachel and Jacob loved Rachel more than he did Leah.
shadowgirl9891 1 year ago 3
@shadowgirl9891 I get Reuben and Judah mixed up a lot, probably because of this show... Xo
Here Judah is sort of depicted as the eldest
As for Reuben, I believe lead his brothers to go wipe out the family that stole his sister Diana

@EclipseRaven but the bible says a coat of many colors. It says so in Genesis 37:3
dragoscilvio 1 year ago
@dragoscilvio while im sure you already know, to avoid confusion, I will tell you anyway. The Bible was not written in english and the people who translated it sometimes made mistakes, when they translated "many cloths" they were not aware of the importance of that kind of coat, and assumed that it must have been many colors because it has a similar translation from hebrew and in the period it was translated being able to afford bright colors was a great sign of status and wealth.

You mean Ruben's birthright?
Rubenmeister10 1 year ago
@Rubenmeister10 Reuban, Levi, and Simeon were denied a large inheritance and also the Headship of the House because of sin, Reuban slept with one of Jacob's wives, Bellah I think, and Levi and Simeon basically murdered a whole city

Parents ought to give their children the same kind of love as their newborn and know that they are special no matter what.
hiedgar 1 year ago 2
@hiedgar The thing is Jacob had married two women. He worked for seven years to marry Rachel (Joseph's mother) but Rachel's father tricked him into marrying Leah, the eldest daughter. So Jacob worked another seven to marry Rachel. The other sons are all Leah's and only Joseph is the son of Rachel, whom Jacob really loves. Yes, Jacob shouldn't have shown favortism but causing the brothers to be jealous and the selling Joseph into slavery all worked accordingly to God's plan.

@Persona100Duh ad then gods plan backfired. big time
superryomafan 1 year ago
@superryomafan I don't see how the plans of the LORD have backfired. For one, even though the Bible has its ending like any other story, we are still creating paths and making choices that will, eventually, intertwine with the end of the Bible; thus Christ Jesus will descend and Rapture His people to grant them eternal life by His side. God has everything planned and it will all work out. I have faith in Him.
Persona100Duh 1 year ago
@Persona100Duh so then then i still dont understand y god made a plan for thousands of people to suffer and die.
superryomafan 1 year ago
@superryomafan They suffered and died, yes, but it's not as though it was all for naught. If they believed in the LORD and followed His Word, they have everlasting life with Him. Sure, we don't like being put into such situations of torment and to die either slowly or violently--no one does (unless they're masochists); this is a temporary place for us anyway. Death is sad, don't get me wrong; however the reward on the other side is worth it if you believe.

Still you shouldn't favor one child over the others. I understand why he did but he still snubbed his other sons. And all children are miracles.
VeryFairygirl14 1 year ago
@VeryFairygirl14 I agree with you, however, everything worked out according to God's plan. If the brothers hadn't been jealous, they never would've sold him into slavery. And because of those acts of hatred and betrayal, in the end, Joseph became a powerful man in Egypt and thus brought a prosperous time for his people.
Persona100Duh 1 year ago 2
@Persona100Duh and then he died and his brothers and thier children got blamed for it and were placed in slavery and after generations came moses who freed the people and brought them out of eygpt
GreekMythFan7 1 year ago
@GreekMythFan7 Yup! God has it all covered. XD
Persona100Duh 1 year ago
@Persona100Duh kind makes me wonder if he does have it covered wat he was doing in WW2? I mean how many of his people were killed over 3 mil
GreekMythFan7 1 year ago
@GreekMythFan7 It makes me wonder too--I can only guess because, even though the Bible is our way of connecting with Him, there are things He does we just don't understand and yours is a good one. Maybe it was some sort of punishment? You know, because in the Old and New Testament He would show them ways and they'd refuse to look at it. But also, some bad things can be used for His good purpose and drive us back to God when driven to despair.
Persona100Duh 1 year ago
@Persona100Duh then y r they in slavery
superryomafan 1 year ago
@superryomafan Then God took them OUT of slavery. Brought the plagues and everything just to set His beloved people go. And even after Him delivering them out of that brutality, Moses leaves for 40 days and then returns to see them worshiping a golden calf.
Persona100Duh 1 year ago
@Persona100Duh then if his "will" was to let them go anyway y didnt he just NOT put them in slavery to begin with and cut out the middle ma so to speak
superryomafan 1 year ago
@superryomafan You really think He enslaved His people on purpose? Yes, He probably could have done that and saved them tons of grief, but one: how and why should I question the way God works? And even after He took them out, they still turned away. Two: Being a follower of God doesn't mean everything will be hunky-dory forever. Clearly, anyone who believes in God is mocked and ridiculed--unless He grants it, you're not called to live comfortably as a Child of God. This life is temporary anyway.
Persona100Duh 1 year ago
@oblviousnesssucks1 A good question, I was born catholic as my parents were so as a child I read it and a few years later I converted to a new religion as I had lost faith in christianty/judaism (there's other reasons involved but this is one of the main ones).
However I later re-read it mostly to re-gain a grasp of the lessons Joseph (the Patriarch, and one of my heroes growing up) & Jesus and many similar stories were trying to teach.

Hey people, is Jacob the Jacob who wrestled God?
Dinoross 1 year ago
@Dinoross yep
Mythbuff 1 year ago
@Mythbuff I'm surprised he didn't tell Joseph that.
Dinoross 1 year ago
@Dinoross Probably cause Joseph is supposed to be the miracle child not him lol, not sure no doubt Jacob thought something along the lines of; 'Best to be modest and not to offend god'.
And given how Jacob in the stories is; modesty eventually seemed to become almost his middle name that he signed the papers with. (He's another one of those interesting figures from the bible stories)
Mythbuff 1 year ago
@Dinoross yeah, he tricked his twin brother and had to leave to find a wife and seek safety. On the way to his uncle's he wrestled with God, and God siad he had now struggled with both man and God and has won the right to live, or something among those lines :-) anyway, yeah that's him - Joseph's father...it think xx
rachaelphilip08 1 year ago
@oblviousnesssucks1 true however as a pagan let me just say that some prefer to watch the movie rather than read the bible no offense (though I have read it, I just don't believe in it but I have to admit that there are some biblical figures and stories that are just gorgeous (I like that word) such as this one)
