They are just different colored. They are more for show. They are collector Pokémon.

I spent 2 days chaining Tyrogue, got him with a chain at 3 lol. I was in art class and was like OMG, the shiny was the third one, hightest chain on him was 26.

i catch all my shinies in a luxury ball. w/ the exception of beldum (timer ball) :-) (same catch rate as arceus!!!) and also did u know that chansey and dialga have the same catch rate? i was chaining them, not to get a shiny, but to get a lucky egg. none so far, but a lot of oval stones. hey, at least they sell 4 good. :)

{i got like 3}... they increase exp that you get by 1.5 . so if i would have gotten 2000 experience from fighting a pokemon, i get 3000 instead. what is really good is raising traded pokemons (extra boost), which will then be 4000 exp

When you catch a pokemon you already have, it skips the pokedex entry thing.
