The shuttle program was not a mess, it was a learning experiance. The ending of it is sad. There is nothing now, no other program. All those that worked, tested, trained and achieved are not needed now . A space program explores beyond the barriers of our planet. What we have learned and how we have been affected since the days of Apollo are the riches we acheive by following our instincts to explore.

@NewGuardNetwork While the program did need to end - to make way for the next generation capsule, the shuttle has not wasted a single dollar. It was the shuttle that taught us to create large modular spacecraft in orbit - on a completely different level than Mir. We needed that knowledge to pave the way to more important objectives, namely getting to Mars. Much the same way Gemini taught us how to rendezvous, and how Mercury taught us to stay alive. The shuttle was a necessary stepping stone.
