I disagree, you should hate the opposition. Many right-wing conservatives view us(Left Wingers) as a threat that must be eliminated(For example, Berightbart or whatever his name is) said they have more guns than liberals, which is a pretty clear threat. I say we take up the same ideal. If they want 2 Americas than that is what they should get. Holding hands with conservatives will lend nothing positive to any liberal or left-winger, it will only result in the further maligning of our values.
@iCalintz The way I see it, you're going to have to live with or next to the opposition in either case. Unless one side wipes the other out, that is, and I don't think we're near that point and I hope it stays that way.
Some people on the other side are receptive to other ideas today, and others will be tomorrow, once enough of the people close to them have changed their minds.
We can play a positive role in making that happen, or we can keep the divide in place and stop change.
Foreign relations spring to mind. Some factions of the Muslim world believe certain things very strongly about America, and Americans. When some were detained and tortured, and the manner in which they were tortured... it fed into their perceptions and prophecies. But it was a few brainwashed undereducated rednecks that represented all of us when engaging in the dehumanizing torture.

I hate people who hate the opposition, especially people who love people who hate the opposition.

@IndifferentSky Definitely, I think cultural conflict is a prime example. It seems that all too often, hatred begets hatred.
