  • Im Canadian WTF!!!

  • everyone is so beautiful on here!!!! T_T

  • "mother you killed them!" —thank you for saying that

  • Haven't seen this in years D: -rewatches-

  • Damn :*( the tears started flowing as soon as the girl said: "Mother, It's your fault!" I've never cried this early in a film or movie... ever...

  • didnt know luffy was a girl

  • what is in the tin box at 1:19 ?

  • @AnnaSpanna11

It was the Setsuko's fruit-drop can who she treasured a lot.

  • @AnnaSpanna11 Setsuko's bones/remainings..,dis movie always makes me cry..:'(

  • AWWWW T~T

  • Those sandles look damn uncomfortable

  • 4:18 WTF? Ripped off

  • i like the way that this version tells more about the story... it's still so heavy n make me cry =(

  • I dont think I can watch this movie. I seen the anime and knowing how the ending is with real people makes me really want to cry.

  • the aunt is sexy here

  • Right now i sorta want to go punch the person who had the brilliant idea to put "Owl City - Fireflies" as the featured video

  • what was inside the candy can that the aunt was holding?

  • @nagasei It was some of setsukos remains when she died. if you see the cartoon version, it shows u at the end how she died

  • @nagasei bones

  • @nagasei waste no time and go see the original anime version.

  • I wish this was more true to the movie and story. Setsuko's supposed to be 4, not 7 or 9 or so.

  • @Slightlybaka Yes, but I very much doubt that a real life four year old could have played the role. Setsuko has quite a lot of dialog in this, plus many emotional scenes. Most kid roles are played by a child at least two years older than the character. It sucks, but the little girl plays Setsuko so well, so I don't mind.

  • Holy crap this is just the beginning and I'm already crying. I can't take out Setsuko's lifeless image in my head in the anime. :(

Seeing her alive, I mean by a really live girl, I don't know if I can continue this exhausting, painful, and emotionally depressing journey all over again...

  • @jomai2040 lol, agree. T__T ( all over again )

  • The saddest part is that there was probably a Seita and Setsuko out there during that time period. Looking for there mother, being rejected by their aunt, living on their own...

  • a better ring maybe?

  • Omg...I'm finally crying over this! o.o

  • Well for what I've seen until now, just this and the 1. lawl.. I really like it. I even cryed some tear maybe its just because I remember the anime and I'm just all like ;;'__';; aah... its so fucking sad. Well I also like how the aunt realise that she was a bitch for doing that shit.

  • Setsuko's hat really looks like Luffy's hat from One Piece ;3

  • Comment removed

  • This version holds the aunt responsible?

  • Her to show feelings now when she disregarded them mother and the others in the beginning is like trying to lit wet wood

  • I can see why this is satisifying to certain people though since this has the more fake but more gratifying acknowledgement that the aunt sucked and killed those children. Its still not as good as the anime but it does call that bitch out at least. Although in reality she should be punished.

  • D: i watched the animation but the begining from this verson is so confusing...

  • Oh.....So sad

  • at 2:25 I think the two fireflies represent Seita-kun and Se-chan......notice how when she reaches to grab them, they fly away.

  • I enjoy the live action because the aunt actually realises what she's done. T_T But it's still so sad...

  • She looks like my Bby Cousin who is 3 Years old. Apparently, Still cute! :3

  • good film, but it seemed less powerful than the anime version

  • i like the live action because it goes more into the side characters also but i feel it could have been better

  • True story?

  • @APenguinStoleMyCandy yes it was based off true events of a guy who decided to write a novel on his life story to help him to cope over his sist'ers death then the anime film was created based off the book.

  • AWWW I'm bawling since I watched the anime & know the story. *cries*

  • huh??? o.o ain't we going to see the whole story? I mean, this seems like the end.

  • The one single thing I dislike about Grave of the Fireflies, is the way they show fireflies. Fireflies do not have a constant glow-- they blink!

Other than that, though, I adore Grave of the Fireflies. Thank you for uploading the live action!!!

  • I think so to.

  • i think ppl should atch the animated one first

  • IMO, J-cinema is badly underrated. They produce some of the best movies I've ever seen. I love this movie and Ringu.

  • There are still many Seita and setsuko around the world who needs help.

  • I totally lost my control when the aunt picked up the tin. Wow... just wow. If you haven't watched the animated movie, do so now. It has a very powerful message, while this adaptation should be regarded with a more allegorical, alternate-perspective story.

  • ありがとう おおきに

  • Holy shit... I've never made it past 0:45 to 2:05

Between these two points I will admit, I bawled like a BABY!! Tears ran down my face and I've cried each and every single time that I've watched this move between this time... :*( So damn sad!!

  • why is she blaming her mother?crazy lil girl

  • @godai631 Well the mother basically drove them out of the house by being a royal bitch to them.

  • @godai631 : If you watch the animation movie. You'll understand, the girl's mother was the the boy and his sister's aunt after the bombing killed there mother. They stayed for a while but the aunt began to quite cold to them and the brother, sister were force to leave elsewhere.

So in a way, ..the aunt had inevitably started the downhill events which eventually ended the two lives. :<

  • @rila ok yes ur right,i just didnt realize who that was until now...i did watch the anime and yes she is a biaatch!!i like the anime better,in this one she's trynna teach them some work ethic and they just being lazy.that totally wasn't the case in the anime

  • @godai631 actually, when I saw the anime... as much as she was a horrible person, she was making a valid point in her own regards. The NEEDED to help out, but instead refused. From her point of view, they were in fact lazy. From the children's point of view they were emotionally distressed. This adaptation is good because it makes you think more analytically.

  • @ZillieZephyr ...i dont know but i can only see her making a valid point in the real life version but in the anime she was trynna drive them away like in a really manipulative, conniving, bitch ass way.and its really hard to see past all that especially when u already in a dramatizing situation.she being the adult is more educated on how to approach people.her approach is discrimination(ill show these kids by giving them seasoned water and everyone esle meat and rice that they are not welcome here

  • OMG it's the lady from Ringu

  • i cant continue to watch the rest of it. .ive already gone through half the tissue box...i saw the cartoon version years ago..i know what is to come later in the movie and i just don have the heart to watch again. but i wanted to thank you for having it on here so people can see and learn of the consequences of war.

  • aww cried for the anime now im gonna cry again this film is sooo saddd

  • eh, so the woman is the aunt? kinda different from the original

  • damn i already cried.

  • @salsa02

    me too ; _ ;

  • It looks good, but can't hold a candle to the original.

  • It's so sad...that fruit drops can held so many memories....if only the men knew what it held, they would understand.

  • dude these subtitles aren't right

  • ohhh the mother is the aunt ?

  • this film makes me feel sorry for iraq and afghanistan kids fuck george w bush

  • Um... have you seen a different version when Seita was told of his mother's death while he was playing with Setsuko, but she asked him to keep playing with her because she was too little to understand.

  • ok like wen they r at the beach and all werent they like swimming or playing and then the mom called them to eat in like the animated version?srry im still a lil confused...

  • It's so sad. I would like to know why the Americans bombed Japan.

  • @mouseratrabbit Because the United States are the first criminal country in the world

  • @dirottato72 How could you say that thats just plain prejudice of you Dont you read any history theres always a country guilty of mass murder and genocide. The romans did it any other great empires of the world did it. What gives you the right to judge a counrtry can you say your country didnt have blood in their hands.

  • @mouseratrabbit supposedly they did it to avoid a greater number of casualties on both sides. in a way it was sort of Japans fault because even after the two largest bombs were dropped it took them a while (and further smaller bombings of napalm cannisters) to finally surrender.

  • @thangQanime Supposedly. However, it is common knowlegde it was more a demonstration of atomic bomb.

  • @YellowMagi completely agreed. politicians sure are sick.

  • @mouseratrabbit its what you call a neccessary evil and someone has to do it.

  • @mouseratrabbit Because during world war II,the japanese were with the Germans but still,I don't think that they should have done that:(

  • It's ironic how the daughter is blaming her mother for killing them. She didn't seem to be exactly helping the two out during the animated movie.

  • they shoulda just made a live action movie , instead of this made for tv bullshit

  • @druha10304

Well, I doubt it could have bested the animated, I mean, that soundtrack was just phenomenal.

  • 4:39 xD

  • Its trying to make a point, WAR SUCKS

  • everybody knows that though...

  • I got the anime and never saw the live action movie, it's really cool they made this :) Thank you for uploading!

  • no offence intended to the people who like the live-action, but i must say that the "magic" that is in the anime movie isnt captured in this.

  • @AshTheFallenAngel I agree entirely.

  • @AshTheFallenAngel its ironic because even tho this is live action, and the original is a cartoon, the original seems more real.

  • the one thing is different is,, that in the orginal verson, there no saying america or us againest them. not a blameing game.

  • ok the live action sux im sorry...the anime was way bttr

  • It's a sad story, but..seriously, it's all just Karma..

If japan never invaded china and asian countries, and pearl harbour, this would never happen.

They seem like the victims here, but think about the millions that have died because of their invasion.

If it wasn't because of japan's agressive invasion, this family would still be happily living together, none of this would happen.

  • These people ARE victims, victims of WAR. These children had no more to do with any invasion than you do for your country's invasion of other places (or perhaps you do?)

You overgeneralize. You cannot blame or punish a group of people or individuals for the actions only some are responsible for. By your logic, the US deserves to be bombed for Vietnam or perhaps all European descendants should be wiped out for what happened to American Indians.

  • @fiveoctaves yet you must acknowledge that given the opportunity the japanese would've done the same

  • @p849 The same what? Blame all people in the U.S. for dropping atomic bombs? Many certainly do. That doesn't make it right. If you choose to take the low road also, that's up to you. That just makes this a worse place than it has to be.

  • @fiveoctaves Im saying the japanese would have brutally bombed us down given the same opportunity. Im not taking the "low road", im being realistic.

  • @p849 The Japanese bombed and got bombed back. What you say is obvious, a generalization and unrelated to my initial comment. The way you say it makes it sound like that justifies reason for dropping an a-bomb. Sorry I accused you of taking the low road. That would apply to the US as per your statement. and if I were to generalize as you have, all Americans, which I don't not know if you are one or not.

  • @lwgreendog18

Actually , i am a chinese too , i know the feel about the war , although i am a kid now , but i understand that all the countries at ww2 also have their victims ... of the WAR and well , although we hate japan before ..

i also understand that japan also have victims .... not only china ...

  • @lwgreendog18 In your dreams. Thankfully, most people aren't as bigoted as you.

  • @fiveoctaves Very well said

  • every war has innocent victims...the power hungry leaders that lead this poor people to hell doesn't mean its their fault. There is no karma in war, no good guy bad guy... just death.

  • what an idiot.. how can you blame innocent people for the actions of their leaders?

then everyone in the u.s should die because of their unfair invasions in the middle east?

  • @shuttleBabe

    Ok! it's all just Karma.

    American killed many peoples too.

I wonder why American be not tried?

    Please watch this.

  • is that the boys mother sister that took in the boy and his sister, and then throw them out cuz of money

  • Oh man, I hate this ;.;

    The Anime was so sad.... and now that I watching this I had started to cry in the beginning ;.;

Even if it has differences between anime an live I somehow like both of them... but why must it all be so sad.... or am I just such a crybaby??

  • anime version is more tragedy O_O. the real movie story has a very big deferencei i like the anime though =]

  • I happy now because at least I know the aunt know what she did was wrong and felt sorry for them

  • Yeah, the aunt wasn't really focused on in the anime. In this one, it did more then just leave you with the thought that she was a total bitch.

  • mmmmm they both look older than they should be...

  • they loook older...

  • most beautiful

  • this one doesnt really tie up with the anime

  • it doesnt because the live action was written based on the point of view of the daughter of the aunt.

  • oh that's that aunt they stayed with for a while and only let them eat rice, wasn't she mean?

  • I thought it was sad when she picked up the fruit drop can and the two fireflies came up and she said "thank you"

  • .... can't touch the original

  • Ofcourse I love the animation version better but this is actually quite good! Normally i hate live action versions of original animes but i'm loving this :) hehe

  • In the movie there are many young actresses who didn't appear in the original story. It´s annoying In this point because this caused definetely by a marketing concept of the movie. The provider thinks that a movie without young and popular actresses can not be successful or so.

The animation movie is better because this doesn´t habe such ulterior motives at all.

  • @simsa21 i agree.

  • only movie i seen tht is lyke the excact original the anime

  • why some people said that the anime version is better i think this movie is a nice complement and bring more details for the ova

  • Me and my girlfriend we both cried watching the Anime "Grave of the fireflies". And I'm almost crying now again. I have to show this to my girl!

    Thanks for posting!

    Greetings from Germany!

  • thank you for posting :)

  • I love both the anime and the live action, they really help fill in more of the details. Though half of the sadness at the end of the anime is that he IS alone and that no one cares, but this has thrown a whole new dimension onto it.

  • Anime is much better :)

  • As I've said before, why does either one have to be better? Each movie tells the same story from a different point of view and they each compliment each other very well. Watching them sequentially is a truly gut wrenching experience.

  • really?

    where can i watch it?

  • Here.

  • 1945....dont you know anithing about story!!!! it was the last year of the war!!! DUUUUUUUUU

  • The live action version starts in the summer of 1943 for a reason. This was the last refit of the Maya, the ship Seita's father is assigned to. The ship would return home that winter (which doesn't occur in the movie) and re-embark Jan 1944. It was sunk Oct 23 1944 by a torpedo from the USS Darter. So the last summer Seita would see his father would be the summer of 1943.

  • Correction - USS Dace -- The Darter was a sister ship in the same attack group that sunk two of Maya's sister ships the Takao and the Atago.

  • It seems nice. But I don't think I can watch this. Not after watching the Anime version! <3

  • Ahh this is way too confusing. Dunno which charator's which.

  • wat year does this story take place in??? and can somone at least give me an indrotuction of wat's happening??? cuz i really wanna watch this

  • sorry, im not sure the year but... the boy is Seita. during the war, he & his little sister lost their mom. they're dad was off "fighting in the war" so they went to live with their aunt and cousin. (ladies at the end of the part one) it pretty much about their struggles... sorry, i hope that helped!

  • ohhh ty but i already saw the whole thingy and the year is the WW2 years and ya.,....

  • oooooooops.... *blush*

  • lolz sok XD

  • i was tryin so hard not to cry, but when i saw those fireflies , i broke out cryin

  • I saw this movie in Japan last year. Literally everyone was crying during the end...

  • the original film made me cry so hard...i dont know if i can watch all of this

  • I've only seen the anime version. O.o

I never knew there was a live action one. xD

  • If your watching this.. and havent seen the original anime movie of it.. i HIGHLY suggest you watch that. before this.

Will make alot more sence, and make u appreciate this movie more

  • Yeah I saw this back in 03 I think on vhs very sad movie.

  • very touching..especially when i see the little girl holding the tin of fruit drop..the only thing that can cheer her in that difficult situation...nice movie

  • I'm choking on sadness...

  • i couldn't make it 3 minutes without crying like a little kid T-T

  • same here i star crying at the very beging when the granddaughter hold up the fruit can. T-T

  • *crying*

  • Hmm seems interesting so far

  • lol Usa is a good place so is everywhere else :)

    But this movie is good

  • 6:44 that's the girl from hana yori dango xDD

  • Wow, never ending flow of fireflies in his hand... :)

  • *sigh* i cant hold my tears at 3:43 coz i watched the animated one lots of lots of times since my age 21. every yr i watched the animated and i feel it so deep in my heart and nnow im 31. just hearing the voice of seita and his sister in this movie just made me to tears. Congrats for making the movie alive.

  • I was bawling my eyes out before the title! This can't be good.. :(

  • Holy crap I never knew this existed. I've seen Grave of the Fireflies so many years ago!

  • I heard this movie is good, so I'm going to start watching now.....America shud stop copying movies from Asian films.

  • hello! Please, I need to know if this movie is to be able to get real, I have seen in the animation and I love, I need answers! thanks! ^ ^

  • "America has no chance" That breaks my heart to hear children sing that. How many American children have sang that about other countries...the war could've easily gone another way, time and chance is so frail and powerful. We are our brothers and one.

  • i felt the same way, it's so awful i can't stand it!

  • Just finished watching the anime version. The aunt was a bitch and so uncaring but I can't believe no one else in that family gave a shit about the kids either.

  • yes, i wanted to strangle the aunt, but i think there was also a message of pride. The boy should've have brought the little girl to her when he found out she was sick. Even if he had to pretend he was wrong and beg the aunt for forgivness. Anything for his sister. If the aunt turned the kids away then...!?!?! But I see your point. I haven't watched this version yet, or read the novel, just the cartoon though.
