  • love the video really good

  • great video thanks

  • Interesting observation.

  • Not only was this video fake, everyone knows about diffusion of responsibility at least these actor could of done is make some kind of facial expression that a normal personal would of made such as concern or responsiveness to the noise at least.

  • more of my tax dollars hard at work

  • @PREPAREFORTHEKING this isn't your tax money at work..... this test was probably done by a university. not a government owned lab

  • @horses4petra most universities ARE goverment money

  • Intriguing

  • The bystander effect doesn't exist. The reality is, no one ever wants to help. You just have to when fewer people are around or you're made to be the giant dick that didn't do anything.

This is called the, "Crap, I have to help someone or look like a huge ass" effect.

When the subject looks around he sees that no one else gives a damn either and sighs a breath of relief that he is no longer responsible and can go back to playing tetris.

  • @webtruth105 What you described is a REASON for the bystander effect. You just gave another explanation for it.

  • @webtruth105 Not necessarily. When the test subject hears the man falling he took interest in it, as if he was ready to act- he even put his hands on the arm rest and almost got up. However when he noticed how the two other individuals didn't respond he went back to what he was doing before. I'm pretty sure he was either intimidated- so he was scared to act by himself- or else he figured the person falling was a planned or normal event and the others knew this and therefore he didn't act.

  • @ArmyCBTENGR Exactly. he didn't give a crap.

  • This is bullshit. According to this no-one would ever react to anything when in a group since someone has to act first.

  • @TimdeJong This video simply points out that people tend to conform. Conformity is calming and often makes one feel safe, whereas individuality and breaking free of the whole often makes one feel vulnerable and isolated. Your interpretation of the video as bulshit and theory that no one will ever react to antying in a group demonstrates an extreme lack of rational and critical thinking.

  • @spongemonkey72 No. I´m saying the experiment is false. I´m saying it depends on the individual in a group taking charge or showing care. Saying people will simply not respond to impulses from outside the group when other members of that group do not is just naive. It´s oversimplifying the situation. Group conformity is something proven long ago in real studies.

  • @TimdeJong The video clearly states that the experiment was repeated multiple times. Of course there will be variables. But if you listen the narrator uses language such as "the majority of people" and "often". Of course people react differently. But as a whole people tended to conform.

  • @TimdeJong Sadly, but this is true. The bigger group is, the less responsibilty a single person has. There were many experiments like that. The general tendency is: more bystanders = slower reaction. If you are alone and face an emergency situation you have strong inner feeling that all is dependent on you and YOU must react - because there is noone other who can help that person. Such feeling is lost in a crowd, because you expect others to react first. (sorry for my english :) )

  • Kitty Genovese, that is all.

  • reminds me to the behaviour of the most people regarding 9/11 .. oh, accepted statesman say that this was this and that way, well then it was this and that way, of course.

  • Fascinating experiment! Definitely makes me think. :)

  • The only thing remarkable about this video is that psychology can demonstrate how ridiculous and disordered our behavior often is....it's predictable! But does it indicate our evolved natures or what we've learned from our environments? Because if the latter is true, then we need to reframe our environment - kill what is killing us.

  • @milackk7 we need to act on instinct - don't stop to think; act. The guy in the vid was about to act on instinct, then stopped to think.

  • I love social psychology

  • I have noticed the same thing in daily conversations. People will agree or conform with a subject based on the vibe that the rest of the group gives, even if they would normally disagree and vice versa.

  • theres cases of people being murdered in the plain sight of huge groups of bystanders and not one person willl think to call the police or even try to assist them in any way. SHEEEP

  • Not giving a Fuck at all situations is also and option.

  • Two Words = Bystander Intervention. The first hindrance in getting through the five stages of altruism.

  • BYSTANDER EFFECT

  • I would like to see a percentage of those who still checked to see if the guy was ok.

  • Even if I was by myself I wouldn't get up and check to see if he was okay, but instead laughed to myself, so I'm not that rude.

  • its call the Bystander Effect.

  • Eh this is common sense, it's usually like this. You need a leader, someone to step up.

Some people are naturally born leaders and some followers. Natural born leaders always take things into their hands, no matter what the other sheep say

  • @woodyfly it's a natural phenomena of human conformity... I guess what you should say is there are individual differences among subjects who have a lot of leadership...

  • @woodyfly i don't think it's about leadership, i always help people in those kind of situations - a guy fell off his bike and hit his head and no one went to help, but me, then others came too. teenagers making racist remarks at an old muslim guy, again no one but me said anything to them!

i'm not a leader nor a follower, but i am antisocial, introverted and bad at seeing social cues, but i'm not shy and don't care much what other people think about me.

  • @jdhf983y4uhu i just remembered i helped a girl who had been raped too, late at night in london, no one else asked her what was wrong with her! i'm not a leader, i just don't care what people think about me in social situations. it's not always good because i have embarrassed family members many times by not realising things i shouldn't say lol

  • @jdhf983y4uhu "i'm not a leader nor a follower, but i am antisocial, introverted and bad at seeing social cues, but i'm not shy and don't care much what other people think about me."

I think you pinpointed the main factor here. Most people are not only self-conscious in the presence of strangers, but have also been subtly taught that other people are more knowledgeable than themselves. If other people ignore a noise, we'll tell ourselves that those people know more about it than we do.

  • results are biased, as the second group was told to ignore the sound.

  • ok the real deal; if the others dont respond i would feel that "ok i m new here, maybe they are not and they know that there are people out there helping the guy that fell thats why they arent reacting" so its more of an intellectual conclusion than instinctual behaviour. you have a question "did the guy fall? is anyone helping him?" and if you re alone you got no answer so you check, if there are other people that dont react, you got your answer "even if he did, there s someone helping him"

  • hahaha all too easy to believe.

  • i hate that shit...people who are indifferent and don't do anything to help a situation is just plain retarded and ignorant..makes me want to strangle them.. i am not a follower and i never cared what other people was thinking or doing if i knew it was wrong i would do something about it..not be a dumbass like most people are in this world

  • god damn jew, he looks like a jew, jews never help anyone, god damnnit, good for nothing, heavans sake, god dammit.

  • @kikicreamify Damn it, Mel Gibson, I thought we deactivated your account

  • bowlshit men!!! the accident was fake so there was no reason to jump helping .. .:PPP jump and run help only when the person is old, all other person if they dont ask help then let them they handle .. dude whats all that noise? got work to do here!!!!!!

  • guinea pigs

  • Those were obviously actors.

  • I've been a maverick most of my life, I would have probably gotten up and check on the guy anyway. I don't give a shit what other people think.

  • @TylerMontana if it was a chick those nerds would have ran to her rescue lol

  • what a bunch of pussies. do what you think is right, dont base it on the actions of others.

  • We learned alot about this in English. It's called Mob psychology

  • no no the person who didnt act was just a dick! XD

  • actually it's because when an accident occurs people would rather record it on their phone and upload it on youtube later that nightO_o Booya!

  • @PKSamurai13 That's actually a real psychological effect and there's been experiments based on that. People that film accidents instead of helping often don't realise until later what they had done.

  • they don't even need to be confederates. in other similar experiments, it's shown that groups of subjects are less likely to act then lone subjects.

all we want is to not feel like we ourself are to to blame for anything.

  • we're all so primitive still

  • People have collapsed in busy high streets and been ignored by everyone. Happens all the time in urban centres.

  • sheeple

  • Wow, asshole.

  • that guy really looks fake

  • @Bratcipheo It does look like they re-enacted the second part, but I'm sure they actually did the experiment.

  • where is this from?

  • looks fake

the guy has a stupid face

  • @AntBon420 no shit that's what re-enactment means.

  • fake!

  • HAHAHAHAHA Holy Shit

  • It's not humans fault of being affected by others while in a group, its their "operating system" that works like that subconsciously... governmental brain downgrading procedures that most humans don't even know about.

It all starts from your "obedience" to various rules as you grow in today's world.

  • Comment removed

  • Yeaaaa what your suggesting is a result of hindsight bias...

you should prolly shut ur mouth... your coming off as stupid...

  • yeah your probably right :D my bad

  • one word...fear.

  • It's not voluntary peer pressure. The bystanders are only standing by, not telling the subject what to do. The subject sees them not reacting and maybe they know something she doesn't or there is a good reason they aren't reacting.

It's nothing to do with bravery at all. It's assessing cues from the environment (including other people) to make a decision, something we do so often we go autopilot.

  • Some people are criticizing the subject for sheeplike behavior, saying independence is best. But conformity and learning by example are how we learn many behaviors, even good ones. Conforming can have advantages in other situations, and is our preferred style because it usually is benign or beneficial. This study makes us aware we do it automatically so we won't think "I would never do that," so we better understand ourselves.

  • Conform or obey...don't think!!!

  • like sheep

  • @jboze3131

Were you listening at all? It's kinda like peer pressure. One person by themselves, there's a reaction because they don't care what other people think of them. But when two other peple are in the room, and they hear the crash, the other two don't move, so neither do they. They're too arfaimd of what the other people think. 'Well, they must not think it's a big deal, so I should make a scene about it.' that's what goes through their heads. Like I said, it's peer pressure.

  • @QueenWuya99 I agree its just another form of group conformity and dissassociation of responsibility by the subject. Jboze doesnt have an analytical nor a scientific mind for gathering data nor for experimental observation. Psychology is a science while hindsight is not.

  • Dear God, these experiments are idiotic and not at all scientific. The two confederates are plants, so it doesn't tell us what would happen if people are with others, only what people might do when in the same room with two idiots who have been instructed to ignore the fall might do.

So, people don't want to rush out like idiots when others, who can probably better see, confirm all is well. Shocccking results! I could have told you that without an experiment!

  • @jboze3131

    Dude speaks the truth

  • The first part of your sentence almost explain the second part of it... Surely your last claim to, you all knowing wanabe... Of course all that doesn't mean that you'd react differently without prior knowledge...

  • try these experiments on the same person (of course at way different times) and you might still have the same results. Maybe even the same state of mind.

  • these bystander experiments are bullshit! Everything depends on the individual and what they believe. Some people care more than others. Personally, I am way more likely to help someone with others around so I have some "backup". I'm not as brave alone, but although hesitant, will still help.

  • The illegal worker never asked for help, He just made some source of medieval sound. Hiring illegals is that, illegal and only liscenced contractors with insurance should be hired to stand at stairs. All this goes thru his mind and decides to stay away.

  • This is not bystander/observer effect but just common sense. When the subject hears the sound in an area that he cannot see, he don't need to check it out because he can see that one of the "fake workers" is facing in the direction of the accident. He can thus conclude that nothing serious happened since that guy act like nothing happened.

A better experiment would be to act out an accident where he can see it, and put him with some fake bystanders and see whether he will go help.

  • the fake worker wasn't looking directly at the accident because there was a wall between them.the guy that fell made a hurting sound meaning he was hurt, this experiment prooves that the majority of people do what others do without using their brains, religion is the biggest proof of this

  • Religion is the biggest proof? As in people follow without using their brains? Wouldn't it be the same in reverse? You don't follow religion because you are around others that don't follow? The door swings both ways in that aspect. You are either following others in religions or following another group of people because they aren't following it. Not saying to go either way but it's kind of bias to say others don't use their brains for following something when in fact you are following too.

  • The big difference here being following something without any proof or not following it because it hasn't any substantial evidence sustaining it...

  • Again the only thing that is being said is, "I believe this" or "I don't believe this". The point of saying someone doesn't use their brain because they believe something doesn't do anything. People say that religious people aren't tolerant yet what I have always observed is that those that don't believe in something are intolerant. Just the same as the subject of this test, it all depends on moral standing and upbringing. We are always effected by those around us no matter what we do.

  • @geiuy If you think you know as much as you say. You would know religion does not prove this, it programs this. From birth we are told what is right, so till death we would believe so.

  • It's because people are insecure in their own thoughts and actions

  • @Rosala true. I have been before. If it's obviously bad I'll do something, but now if I'm unsure I'll either still do something, or say something first like "what was that?" (cue people saying "dunno" or "nothing, just kids playing") then "It sounded like 'a scream / that guy failling / etc." That way, I don't have to worry about people thinking "what's he doing?" about me (not that they would be likely to anyway) as they know exactly why I've just got up to look out the window / leave

  • Isnt that called the bystander effect?

  • on a larger scale, people can be aware of a large-scale problem, and based on the inaction of the people around them, they can relax and do nothing. is that sort of the same thing? example: maybe i worry about global warming, but i see everyone is still driving SUVs, so i do too, thinking it's not an emergency.

  • Reminds me of a car alarm. Alarm sounds and no one invetigates if it is being stolen. Saw a vid cam of a store being robbed and the people behind the robber were waiting in line to pay for their items. The inhumanity of humans.

  • I didn't need an experiment to know this... I could have told you this for free.

  • Yes because Youtube isn't free...?

  • It's called the observer effect :O

  • cant this theory be used for religion? like children growing up in a household of religion A, thus they will confirm as they grow up in order to fit in...??? i dont know...

  • @dAlvarez3182 that doesnt need to be tested in this way its already fact.

  • @dAlvarez3182 Well, it's not quite this theory but that is about conformity, yes.

  • @dAlvarez3182 well if a child is raised believing there is a god that all they know so they do believe it without question (until they can develope their own thoughts and opinions) so if someone believe it rains kool-aid thats all they know and they believe it. but i guess conformity can play in as a reason to believe. which is loosely related to this video.

  • @dAlvarez3182 i totally agree and i was thinking that same thing

  • @dAlvarez3182 That's a good thought, but I don't think that relates to the bystander effect. Rather, I think it has to do with the fact that children learn what is good and bad from their parents. An experiment was done where a baby was placed so that he/she could watch the mother. Someone would then walk up to the mother and try to give her a red flower. The mother (who is not the subject) reacted as if the flower was scary. Later when the baby was given a red flower he/she reacted the same way

  • lol

  • well ain't that brilliant ... comformity ... social scientists are perfectly aware of that and this knowledge is well applicable to attitudes towards simple facts ignored by the majority .... comformity behavior ...

  • dude at the computer is moving kinda weird at 0:13

  • I had that impression too, he must looked some kind of illegal stuff :]

  • seen this before....Individually most people are smart, good etc. put in a group the majority behave like sheep. Experiments like these are really valuable, keep posting vids like these *****

  • @h4xx0r84 Yeah, it does not always have to be bad though. We can act good by taking our cues from those around us.

  • this is a great point.

    motivating.

  • I'm not surprised, but the study is quite fascinating when you start to apply this information to other aspects, like political and environmental issues.

  • You seriously are mentally ill and a danger to society. I greatly hope you realize that you are utterly incorrect in all of your statements and may be under a delusion which can cause you to harm others.

Get help from someone even if you don't trust psychologists. But you need help.

  • No, you need to see a doctor and realize that you may possibly be perceiving the world in a way that isn't accurate. And as such you might act on your perceptions not knowing they are wrong.

This is just like if you broke a bone and need to have it set. There is nothing to be ashamed of and it happens to many people. But you need help just like if you had broken a bone.

  • am, yeah cos this experiment really tortured people. the reason psychologists go into their profession is to help poor sick people like u.

  • not necessarily, a lot of them go into it for the money too

  • LMFAO now i know what to do when i dont want some one to get help

  • Yup, this is the reason why you hardly see people rushing to help accident victims. All it takes is a couple people to not do anything for whatever reason, and it spreads to everyone nearby.

  • I rmemeber watching this on dateline.

  • its the bystander effect, and a type of conformity

  • that guy got owned

  • needless to do this experiment,,,

sure this is part of "responsibility sharing" if the others take no action, so does the subject and he doesnt feel responsible if there are others in the room and they do nothing.

  • hmmm i agree

  • To be fair, it wasn't actually an emergency and the confederates' inaction was directly related to this fact. A group of three clueless subjects may have been more likely to investigate (I don't know for sure, of course)

  • who is that guy at 0:06? looks like alec baldwin.

  • ha ha, POLITICS!

  • What's even worse than not acting because no one else does, is not acting because we are told that no one else will.. that is, assuming that no one else will act from the get go. I'm speaking here of our democracy in the States, were we vote for "least worst" every election day, because we are told no one is going to vote for the really good guy (e.g. Ralph Nader).

  • You really needed an experiment to verify this? How sad it is that we have more research psychologists in this country than we do physicists.

  • o really and what's that supposed to mean?

  • is this human nature or just a random desire of being cool by doing what everyone else is doing?

  • seeing your name, I assume you don't want to believe anything else anyway.

  • xD that person just walked into this one!

  • the other students were just lame :P

  • This explains modern world.

  • They are like............ my idols

  • O_o???

    wtf?

  • Note that this particular experiment was only tested on regular students.

  • haha the second test subject looks like such a dork when he looks about at the other guys with that dumb expression.

  • This is an excellent lesson to "always" think for yourself, no matter what. I saw a woman screaming at her 4-year-old? in a parking lot. Everybody just stood there like idiots. I was the only person there who went right up and talked to her, and calmed her down. I was disgusted with that crowd. This has happened frequently in my life. U gotta live up to "your" standards, or U won't be able to live with yourself.

  • I dont mean to step on your toes or anything, but thats often not how it works. I find myself watching these clips and thinking "man i need to be independent", but in reality i know i'd probably fit into that 80% of people who ignored. Its hard to not conform in these situations. When unexpected things happen, humans (which are very, very social creatures) look for unity to help; power in numbers. and when numbers fail, we freeze up in confusion. Its a pity I guess, but its unavoidable sadly.

  • yes i do agree it has partly to do with leaders and followers but it also has to do with no one wants to be seen ass the uncool of the group and i agree i dont like qreers eather

  • 3 months ago I made a simple yet comical observation about this vidio. Maybe it WAS stupid. So what! I see stupid comments every day. Should I pursecuted over it for months?

Don't any of you have a life!? Fuck....Get over it already. Are you ALL so fucking perfect? Your lives must really suck.

Why don't you just get laid!?

  • Stanley Milgram lives.

  • This is a great example of why psycologists don't know shit. Here only demostrates the difference between Leadres and followers. However, this now becomes the law of phsycology. Hmm. No wonder I'm schitzophrenic. LOL

  • Firstly, whoever organised this experiment WAS A PSYCHOLOGIST, and referring to your quote 'this now becomes the law of psychology' . . . . no, no it doesn't, there is a hell of a lot more to psychology than this. You've also made about 4 typos in your comment. Basically my message is, don't comment on videos unless you can spell properly, and have BASE INTELLIGENCE. Also, the use of "LOL" instantly voids any relevance or intelligence that may exist in your comment.

  • you insult me? Go fuck your self you stupid fagget. 4 typos big fucking deal ass hole. I'll comment on whatever I want. the use LOL? I'm lauphing at you now fuck head. get a life!

I'm entitled to my own oppinion. shut the fuck up. I don't give a fuck what you think and if I want to comment on a vidio, I will.

I don't need any shit from fuck heads like you.

  • If you dont give a fuck what he thinks why did you reply with that rant?

  • simple....He called me out. besides, my origional comment was more humore based than anything. It was just a stupid comment. I wasn't looking for any shit. But I don't back down from any one. I guess that's the down fall of a big ego.

  • lol ok

  • wow thats just so deep you should feel real proud mr. bigshot haha lmao do you really feel the need to use the word "fuck" in every three sentences! Wow learn some new vocabulary will you!

  • Go fuck your self.

  • Haha wow! nice man seriously I agree with you haha! :P HEY haha I say Lol but, I have intelligence thank you not all of us are stupid but any way nice comment :D!

  • you just replied to your own comment about me. I guess that makes YOU a dumb ass.

You talk like a queer. I can't belive you used the word "vocabulary" in your statement.

  • ahhh ok r u on pot or something how the fuck does using the word vocabulary make me queer WOW! thats dumb haha your just a sad mother fucker lol haha!

  • you totaly missed the point. How intellegent you must be. You'r probably the only one who miss understood.

  • Just shut the fuck up faget boy.

  • You called him a piece of shirt?

  • Ha! I knew you were a queer! And the term homophobic is used by queers. I don't have a fear of queers. I just don't like them.

  • This is probably staged, except the concept holds true. Just remember that if people think they are the only one that can help, they are more likely to. Since the other's didn't help, the guilt is perceived to rest on all three people, rather then the sole person.

  • well it does say re-enactment at the start but good point though

  • Ah, how sad when our actions are defined by what other people think or do. Nice vid, though.

  • lol

  • this reminds me of a book too its called godless this kid starts thinking that a water tower is god and he gets others to believe him and they make their own religion

  • some people are leaders and many are followers.
