The Soviets didn't win any major battles outside of Russia. They did absolutely nothing against Japan and just betrayed the Americans when they invaded Manchuria. Their tanks fired behind their infantry to prevent retreat. They took up space and the Nazis used a lot of resources invading them, but their military was worthless at that point.

Communist scientists that were trained in America like Linus Pauling and Robert Oppenheimer made Soviet science better when they were tricked.
