This is one of my very favorite shows and sadly, it's rarely done being overshadowed by the Lloyd Webber version. I FAR preferr this one for many, manyt reasons. Because it's rarely done, it's hard to find a good production of it. This one looks like it was very good. I also saw a terrific one about 15 years ago at Carousel Dinner Theatre in Ohio, which is now, unfortunately closed.
When i first heard about yeston/kopit phantom, i thought it sounded cool. i was really into webber phantom a couple years back and then i read the book and i was mad coz webber's musical changed it up so much. so, when i heard about this version i was reeely hoping for a phantom musical that stayed loyal to the book. alas, no. this phantom isn't even a luv triagle, which kind of defeats the purpose of phantom in general... raoul wasn't even there... and yet i can't hate it. its so adorable
I saw this back in october last year. I left the theatre bawling. Very good! You guys should have filmed the Story of Erik too. That was my favorite part.=)
I've described his voice to people as a "bari-tenor" as he has an excellent range. You should have seen it live. His stage-presence was fantastic. "Erik" had an almost adolescent vulnerability. Of course the Kopit/Yeston version is vastly different from ALW. Mr. Minarik is currently on Broadway in Rock of Ages as a "swing" performer.
I love anything to do with PotO! I really want to see this version! I've seen 6 if you count the book. Lon Chaney version, Herbert Lom vresion, Greard Butler version, Robert Englund version, ALW version, and last, but certainly not least, the book. This portayal of Erik seems like it'd be good. A friends actually told me about this one and I had to check it out! I looks amazing! I really want to see it. Michael Minarik has a gorgeous voice.
Yo! This is awesome! Too bad ALW verison overshaowed it. I am from Oxford, MS and I wish that they would do a version of this closer to home. Thank this is awesome much better muusic than ALW any day!
Thank you so much for posting this. I saw this last Saturday and did two things I seldom do at the theatre: I cried and I stood for the ovation. Michael Minarik was fantastic as the Phantom/Erik. I much prefer this version to ALW. Can't wait to see the dvd of the 1990-91 NBC mini-series Arthur Kopit did with Charles Dance as the Phantom and Burt Lancaster as Carriere. DVD should be here tomorrow or Saturday. Guess it will be my "horror" movie for Halloween weekend!
I just got back from seeing it. Wow! it is most definately the better Phantom of the two. I think Andrew's should be called the "other Phantom". The cast also very amazing. I loved it!
Agreed, the story of Eric is amazingly staged, and gorgeously lit--I'm M.E.ing the show, and that's the only scene that I make a point to go out front and watch every night...it's quite worth it.
i went to go see that!!! how did you get the video and do you have the clip from "the story of erik" from when they were talking about when he was a little kid. if you do please put it on here!!!!!!!
This damn show gives me chills every time I hear it...its fantastic!!!!

He's great! I was on the national tour of the Maury Yeston Phantom with him. Very talented guy!

It's close to perfection. And I think his voice is better suited for classical than rock, but if he can do rock, that proves how versatile he is.

Wow, I love his VOICE!! It's perfect!!! just enough boom and but no growl, warble, or flaw at all...
